I love...

How quickly these threads turn into body-shaming.

Re: I love...

I don't see no shame in hurr.

I'm sorry you're having problems with your eyes. That's a bummer.

Quote:

Gross on girls
Gross on either
people who have hair sticking out of their shirt sleeves are pretty unhygienic
Hair is awful anywhere but on the head, and tasteful framing of your privates
I think it's gross for girls, boys, and whatever else anybody identifies as

Don't like it? Cool. Not your personal style? Rock on, baldy. Telling people they're gross because of a natural body function? Not fucking okay. HTH.

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think people who are sick and oozing snot out of their runny noses are gross

That is a natural body function, sometimes it happens to all of us

This does not make them lesser people, just people I do not want to touch

Re: I love...

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2013-11-27 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Given that those people are using gross as a synonym for distasteful, and that the point of this thread was essentially asking whether or not they find it distasteful, I really don't think that counts as "shaming" so much as answering a question.

It's spitting into a crowd of people vs. spitting into a spittoon, Anonypants.

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
There's a difference between "I don't like it/I wouldn't/I wouldn't want to be intimate with someone who doesn't" and "people who don't are gross and lacking in personal hygiene".

For example. Let's say I don't like blue eyes. I would never wear blue contacts. I couldn't bring myself to be in a relationship with anyone with blue eyes. Those are my choices.

It doesn't give me the right to say blue-eyed people should wear dark contacts, or that they disgust me, because they clearly don't care about their appearance.

Genetic expression leading to coloration of irises isn't associated with the potential for large, unchecked bacterial colonies, unpleasant smells, or large amounts of perspiration.

Long underarm hair is.

You can bet your sweet ass that if a large percentage of people with blue eyes also had the potential to give you genital warts, and this was a common and well-known function of blue eyes, people wouldn't think that blue eyes were very hot either.

I'm not excusing body shaming here, I just think your example is bogus and unrelated to the actual associations playing out here.

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know much about the underarm bacterial colonies. There's this great new invention, it's called "soap". It's done wonders for me. Try it!

Oh come on, how is not shaving your pits going to give people genital warts? And it's not like shaving stops sweat or unpleasant smells or gets rid of unchecked bacterial colonies. That all has to do with washing, not with body hair.

You're being as ridiculous as the other anon.

you can be hairy AND clean. all it takes is some extra time in the shower scrubbing. why is this hard to understand?

do people with long hair on their heads gross you out too? as we all know, the scalp sweats and produces oil. someone with hair isn't any "grosser" than someone without it as long as they bathe thoroughly and regularly.

You can bet your sweet ass that if a large percentage of people with blue eyes also had the potential to give you genital warts, and this was a common and well-known function of blue eyes, people wouldn't think that blue eyes were very hot either.

Unless, in this universe, people found genital warts to be an attractive feature. Maybe having genital warts meant you were of a higher social standing.

You can't just make up some weird ass example that has no basis in reality to "prove" your point.

Bacteria grows on your underarms whether or not hair is present. People with and without hair can and do keep their natural odors in "check" with soap and deodorant.

+1. There's a difference between "I don't like that hairstyle" and "that hairstyle is so gross."

Re: I love...

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-11-27 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Well yeah. But you also have people acting that women like me who shave their underarms are somehow disempowered or don't love their bodies enough.

I just don't like how it looks. It takes me all of ten seconds in the shower to get rid of it. I don't think wanting it gone makes me oppressed somehow.

But I don't think expressing an opinion in a thread asking what your opinion is somehow untoward. People have the right to think it's gross. People have the right to think it's wonderful. Who the fuck cares?

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
How? People don't like armpit hair. Get over it. Some people don't like short hair or long hair on the head. It is their preference.

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, some people don't like short or long hair. But it's not okay for those people to go and tell other people they are gross because THEY like it. Not being a douchebag isn't hard.

Re: I love...

So it's a semantics issue?

Is "I don't like it on anybody" ok?
Is "I think the hair is gross" ok?

Most of what you quoted is talking about the hair, not the person. It's not "hairy people are gross," it's "hair is gross to me."

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
No.

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
da

That's what I was thinking too. All those examples are saying IT is gross, not the people

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I think people with armpit hair are gross. Wah wah. Am I going to go up to them and tell them? No. Doesn't make me think it is any less gross.

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think the other anon is overreacting, but they do have a point. Saying you think hair is gross is different than saying people with hair are gross people.

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
What is gross about it? Why is hair on your head not gross? All that hair, growing there, trapping dirt and oils and getting greasier by the minute? God, and you don't even try to cover it up. And those eyelashes, jesus take the wheel, do you know what lives in eyelashes?

Re: I love...

Re: I love...

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-11-27 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Well, when the common thought is hair is gross and unhygienic, then yeah, the thread is going to devolve in to body shaming pretty quick.

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
*eyeroll* Some people find wrists, tongues, feet, toes, chapped lips, calloused hands, the inner corner of the eyes, belly buttons, visible veins, etc etc gross-- or outright have a phobia of them.

Humans are finicky about what they find visually pleasing in a body, get over it.

Re: I love...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Don't mind a moderate amount on men or a fine, light fuzz on women, unless it smells bad. A lot of it is kinda gross.
