Can we stop calling her a rapist? The creators have said that it wasn't rape so it's misogynistic to insist otherwise tbqh.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Oh well done. Oh very well done. Bravo.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Creators can be wrong though. If I drew a duck and said it was a pig, I'd be wrong. If they didn't want something to be seen as rape they should have made damn sure that was clear when they wrote it.

As someone who does not watch the show, please give me the rundown?

I expect that this being OUAT, she somehow magicked/potioned someone to love and have sex with her? Which would be rape.

"Misogynistic" doesn't mean what you think it means. And, while it might be a motivation, it has nothing to do with whether or not an action or actions constitute rape.

Also? The creators' intent isn't a fiat.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
The only way I can retain my faith in humanity is to assume that every anon supporting the OP of this thread is a sockpuppet of that same anon. Really? "The creators say it wasn't rape, so it wasn't rape?" Honey, an action falling under the definition of "rape" is what makes it rape or not rape. That's what definitions are for.

Rape: making someone have sex without their consent. Did she do that? If she did, it's rape. If she didn't, explain to me how it wasn't non-consensual. Did the creators say (or make a deleted scene where) the two of them actually talked things out in private when they were both in their right minds and he consented, or where there was a reveal that all her actions were secretly being controlled by someone else all along? If not, it's rape. By definition.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even watch this show, but where exactly was the male character's enthusiastic, uncoerced consent?

If you willfully make another person an unwilling participant in a sexual act, you are a rapist. That should be a fairly uncontroversial statement.

Helpful hint: media creators incorrectly labeling a sex act as consensual is a major symptom of/contributor to rape culture.

We're not supposed to believe that Regina is blameless. Even as late as the third season we're still seeing flashbacks in Whig she puts an entire town to death and Snow White tells her that she's beyond redemption. She's never going to wipe the slate clean, and as Rumpel told her multiple times, people like them don't get happy endings. The best we can hope for is that she starts making the right choices, which she has. And even as she sees Henry as the one thing that made it all worth it, she was still able to give him up to do the right thing. Regina won't get redemption for her past, but she can get some redemption for her future.

Secret 13 - Once Upon a Time (warning for rape)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-21 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
warning for rape

[Picture is Queen Regina, as portrayed by Lana Parrilla, from the TV series "Once Upon a Time". She is a woman with light skin and dark hair in layers, reaching her shoulders. She is wearing a dark suit jacket and holding up a red apple in front of her face. She is looking thoughtfully at the apple.]

Even as a card carrying Evil Regal, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to sympathize with Regina in the Fairy Tale Land or Storybrooke.

It's becoming clear to me, through her actions and history, that the story Kitsis and Co. are trying to tell about her - Regina as a poor little girl deserving of redemption and blameless for all the shit she's done and a great mother on top of that - is not the one that's actually coming through. Her most recent admission, that she regrets nothing she's done to date, horrified me. I feel like I've wasted my fandom self on a horrible person who killed thousands of innocent people, including her father, raped a man for 28 years, tried to convince her son that he was crazy, and countless other things, because an 8 year old let slip a secret!

She's not even a good mother. She loves Henry but her love for him and dependence on him is unhealthy, especially for Henry. She's crazy. Literally. There's no other explanation I can come up with. I can't believe it's taken me this long to see it.

At least you realize it? If you still like her regardless of her actions, or even because of them...alright, but at least you realize she's far from perfect and is extremely far from blameless.

I would have been surprised if Regina has said she regretted what she had done. There were no hints of her doing so before that point. I mean... she's just not that person.

Just because people in fandom woobify her doesn't mean that's what she is. Her actions speak for her.

But I do agree with you about the writers backtracking on the good/bad mother thing. And I think they're trying to write her as somewhat sympathetic so they could 'redeem' her but it comes off as ridiculous. The story with her holding a grudge against a 8 year old Snow White when her mom was the one who killed her boyfriend just makes her look all the more petty, vindictive, cruel, and selfish. I mean she is the 'evil queen'... but there's no room for nuance or another side of the story here.

Wow, I'm getting tired of the "Regina the Rapist" thing, not because it is untrue, but because every single conversation about Regina ends up beinga bout the rape.

She raped on guy

She has killed HUNDREDS

Yet, is the rape what get's people tlaking. This is just so fucking dumb.

And anyway, everyone missed the point of the secret, which talked about Regina's regret.

Which Regina took away magically. And that notion is intriguing from an ethical standpoint. How can she blame herself if she removed her ability to feel guilt? does that make her a better or worse human being? Does she even deserve that second chance?

But no, everyone talks about the dude that she raped.

And that's not even pointing the fact that is magical coercion-rape; does it hold the same level of atrocity than violent-rape? Even murder has gradations.

Ahhh yes, murder; why are we even talking about rape when she has commited GENOCIDE.

GENOCIDE.

POLITICAL GENOCIDE.

How is one dude getting magically abused WORST THAN THAT.

Rape is not the end all of human evil, and I'm so fed up of seeing not only SJW, but pretty much everyone saying so.

Rape is horrible in our culture because it's the only major crime that still hold a sick and twisted cultural justification around the world, that's why we fight it, that's why we rage against the culture that enables and condones this horrible act. Rape is an horrible act, yes, but is not the worst crime. The devastating thing about rape is society's reaction to rape. It's about the crime and the context that enables it.

So no, the rape with magical altered consent of Graham is NOT THE SAME.

oh and also, GENOCIDE.

As an evil regal, I have to agree with you. Problem brig, I'm too invested in her character to back out now. Yes she's a terrible person (or at least, has been in the past) - but I'll almost be on board with disliking her for those reasons, and then Lana Partilla does something with her face and I'm gone again. Another thing though, which I feel the discussion (on all platforms) has lacked, is that just because you don't agree with a characters actions, doesn't mean you can't like them as a character.
