Man.

If there's any Doctor Who fans out there who are going to be refusing to watch Wizards vs Aliens specifically because it's a kid's show... I mean, I don't know, I don't have any horse in this race, but that seems really funny to me.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-27 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I always told people about Sarah Jane Adventures...it reminded me more of Classic Who than Modern Who does, with its energy and enthusiasm, and Sarah Jane makes a damn fine Doctor!

And for all Torchwood is the 'adult' one of the franchise, SJA was always more grown-up in that people actually learned and grew and talked out their problems, and it handled some heavy topics in respectful ways.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-27 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I wanted to love SJA but it just didn't happen. I could relate to Sarah Jane well enough, but the episodes I watched were really about Luke and his friends and I just didn't care. Add in the terrible special effects and overly simplistic plot lines and the show was unwatchable for me :(

I've heard of this, and actually have the first episode d/led but have never watched it... I should do that. (-:

I too wish some of the moaning faced bastards from the Doctor Who fandom would fuck off and check out other shows. It would certainly make Dr Who fandom more pleasant to be in. Pity for the other fandoms though.

I've never heard of this show before, but now I really want to check it out.

*looks up on IMDB* OMG BRIENNE IS IN IT.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-27 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
And she is HOT in it.

I've never even heard of this show - how is it, really?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-12-27 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Now I really want to check it out, because it sounds great!

But I also have limited time, so rather than go off just one secret/viewpoint, I'm going to ask:

Has anyone around here seen it?

And if so, how is it? Is it like the OP says? Because I'm just about willing to watch a show on those merits alone. And how is it in general?

Re: I've never even heard of this show - how is it, really?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-27 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's worth it. It takes a while to get into, but it's only two seasons long, and once you get up to the second season, it's fantastic.

If it is, then how does it get away with all the stuff people wank about here? Are British standards for such things really that different? (I don't watch it, but as one example, people wanked here about implied oral sex in an episode called "Love and Monsters." No American kid's show could ever get away with that.)

Classic Who was but New Who is a family show, meaning they specifically include things to appeal to adults.

I don't understand people who refuse to watch kids' shows in general. They have good messages (usually) that a lot of adults seem to have forgotten.

Secret 3 - Wizards vs Aliens (TV series)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-27 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a promotional image featuring Tom Clarke, as portrayed by Scott Haran, and Benny Sherwood, as portrayed by Percelle Ascott, from the British TV series "Wizards vs Aliens". Tom Clarke has light skin, short dark hair combed to make it sort of voluminous and wearing a red jacket. Benny Sherwood has dark skin, short dark hair and is wearing eyeglasses and a flannel cream-colored shirt. They both look fairly young, teenagers. Tom Clarke is doing some colorful firey water thing with magic and looking determined at the camera, while Benny Sherwood looks fascinated and surprised at something off-screen. There are fantasy-type backgrounds behind them, with stone cities, candles, metal arcs, caves, etc.]

I wish more people who complain about Moffat's Who and liked RTD's way of handling characters and development checked out Wizards vs Aliens and joined its small, fledging fandom.

Yes, it's a kid show, but - after a slightly shaky start - it's everything that I've seen so many people claim that they miss. Grounded characters whose feelings grow and change and last beyond the course of a single episode? The belief that friendship, love, and faith can overcome almost any obstacle? Moral dilemmas where pacifism and forgiveness are held as true virtues? A jubilant love of technology and learning and exploration and life? Racial and sexual diversity in the main cast? Female characters who don't just exist to be spunky/sexy/witty/etc?

Oh and remember The Girl Who Waited and how that episode was NEVER brought up again? Or Amy's traumatic pregnancy that was brought up ONCE and then quickly resolved? We've got that covered too.

Considering how good Sarah Jane Adventures was, I'm not surprised.

I haven't watched it because the cast appeared to be so heavily slanted toward male. Is this not true?

I really want to watch this show! But have yet found a dl...

Actually, IMO, if you're going to stoop to 'traumatic pregnancy' as a storyline, I'd prefer it's never mentioned again. I hated that plot and wish they hadn't gone down the pregnancy road at all. The best thing they did with that storyline was drop it.

I agree totally, anon. I absolutely love Wizards Vs Aliens. The writing is very good indeed, the effects are either amusing (big cheesy monsters ftw) or excellent (space scenes and magic) and it's the one show I'll watch that I know will make me cry once a series. Major bawling *g* The boys are cute and the adults are extremely likeable. It's pure enjoyment, and I don't give 2 figs it's on CBBC *g*
Where can I find this fledgling fandom?!
