Convert me, FS!
(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)And I realize that this is completely illogical, because I love everything else about music in the 60s, and music since then which is heavily influenced by the Beatles.
Make me like this band. It would save me so much raging.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)From that: Come Together
Something
Here Comes the Sun
I Want You (She's So Heavy) [This one is 7 minutes long and the lyrics are repetitive, but the sound of it is a lot different than the ones you've heard]
Maxwell's Silver Hammer (I'm not sure if you would like this tbh but I'm throwing it in because I do. It's upbeat but morbid.)
Octopus's Garden (this one was written by Ringo; most of them were written by John and Paul so if you find one you do like, maybe look up others that were written by or sung by that person).
From other albums:
Norwegian Wood (Rubber Soul)
Hey Bulldog (Yellow Submarine)
Hey Jude
Let it Be
Rocky Raccoon (The White Album; if you like 'story' songs you might like this)
Hey Bulldog (along with I Want You) is more rockish (?) than the ones you listed, Hey Jude and Let it Be are slower paced, Hey Jude is often sung by large crowds in the end of movies I think so you've probably heard it. Norwegian Wood and Here Comes the Sun are just lovely.
I also love Help! and Hard Day's Night but I'm not sure if you would, their sound is kind of similar to the ones you listed.

Put simply: The Beatles are too old, too influential, and too much a product of their time, and life is too short, to hate them with that kind of severity.
Also, they're not the Rolling Stones.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)I like the Rolling Stones way more than the Beatles. They're just so much more fun.
I do like to pretend that they broke up in 1974 and everything subsequent to that is just Jagger solo work or some Jagger / Richards spinoff thing or something, though.

Re: Convert me, FS!
(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)But! They have such varied types of music/songs throughout their career that I'd think you could find *something* in there to enjoy. Maybe just peruse some different songs and see if something pings for you? I myself prefer the "bubblegum pop" of the early Beatles and don't really care for the more serious later Beatles.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)1. Turn on radio
2. Listen until Beatles
3. Turn off radio
So it's entirely possible I would like things that don't get played... but I thought before I commit to listening to everything, I'd see what FS has to say about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)It's got the Beatles sound, only it's not Beatles. So why not start there?
After that if you're feeling brave, try 'Blackbird' by the Beatles. It's not as much "in your face" as their other songs.
You've probably heard the more famous songs, so maybe also have a listen at 'Bad boy', 'And I Love Her' & 'Don't Let Me Down'. You wouldn't necessarily know they're by the Beatles if you didn't know in advance.
Oooor if you wanna go the easy way, just take some acid, kick back and put the Beatles on.
Re: Convert me, FS!
(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)This.
I don't care for the Beatles much but Blackbird is fantastic.
OP
(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)I wish I'd thought of that.
"New" is pretty cool. I've replayed it a couple times. "Bad Boy" isn't bad. I liked one version of "And I Love Her" and hated another version, so I dunno what's going on there. Hmm.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Convert me, FS!
I will note that I had no interest in them whatsoever until I started hearing some of their weirder stuff. "I Am the Walrus" was the one that made me actually start listening to the albums instead of just occasionally hearing them on the radio. And then I found out that they did "Glass Onion" which had a reference to that, and listened to the white album and just... aaaagh. Infatuation. "Dear Prudence" is one of my favorite Beatles songs ever, and "Long Long Long", and I laugh a whole lot at "Yer Blues", since it's basically John Lennon making fun of the entire "blues" genre. And I had a metalhead for a boyfriend once, he hated the Beatles too - except "Helter Skelter", which he said was the only song they ever wrote he liked.
Their early, more pop stuff only grew on me with time, and Paul's songs are the ones that most frequently get air time... and his songs still have a tendency to make me roll my eyes, even the ones I find catchy. XD Once I started finding out who wrote which songs, I discovered I had a great preference for John and George.
So while it's perfectly fine to not like the Beatles (just you'd never want to take a long car trip with me!), they have a HUGE discography, and if I'd only heard the common stuff that gets frequent radio play, I'd find them overrated myself. Might want to try looking into some album towards the end of their run, and listening to the songs you've never heard of before - you might be surprised.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 12:24 am (UTC)(link)Those are some interesting songs you picked out. I listened to them... I'll have to listen to them all again the next time I am drunk.
Actually, I have thought from time to time that my issue may be with Paul. I can't say if there's anything to that, or if he's just the main one I recognize. Some day I will probably just sit and listen to things, to see what it is I haven't heard on the radio.

Re: Convert me, FS!
(Anonymous) 2013-12-28 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)but I did have an interesting course in the history of rock n' roll back in college that helped me understand things about older generations of music that were essential to me understanding modern music (which, at the time, was 1990s, so grain of salt here). It isn't that the chord progressions, lyrics, or series of notes forming hooks are particularly ground-breaking or unforeseen, it's that the Beatles did things that other people hadn't done before, and in the process, made large percentages of the population adore them. Their success paved the way for much of how music is enjoyed and perceived today. So, you can objectively understand that the Beatles were trailblazers of a sort, as well as highly influential, without actually liking their music.
I worked in hit radio for a time and came to the conclusion that I just don't like the Beatles either, and that's okay. You don't have to like their music to respect them. Go forth and roil in your hatred. I have much the same knee-jerk reaction to Guns N'Roses and I grew up on that shit.

Re: Convert me, FS!
(Anonymous) 2013-12-29 02:49 am (UTC)(link)I don't like the bubblegum-poppy Beatles either, I prefer their weirder stuff (already mentioned by a few people) or their more melodic stuff, which tends to be more interesting musically.
Here are some favorites of mine from the second category (some might've been mentioned already):
Norwegian Wood
Eleanor Rigby
Nowhere Man
Only a Northern Song
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Old Brown Shoe
A Day in the Life
Across the Universe
Here Comes The Sun
Yesterday
Because
On the off chance no one's mentioned it, Hey Jude
Other songs worth a listen:
It's All Too Much
Think For Yourself
Blue Jay Way (*very* trippy/psychedelic, and *very* unBeatles)
Also, maybe try looking for things written by Harrison (irregular but IMO brilliant songwriter) instead of Lennon/McCartney (the group's regular songwriters)?
If you like rock operas and 60s culture, look up the film Across the Universe. It's a story composed from Beatles songs but sung by other people, and IMO speaks to how they shaped a decade. Maybe it won't make you love them, but might dull the hate.
