Wow, I didn't know Will Wheaton was in The Big Bang Theory. I may have to check out the series. He was great in Leverage.

DA

In some ways my work shifts work too well with F!S - on one hand, I'm home around the time the posts go up. On the other, I'm still busy taking care of things around the house, and by the time I really have time, I'm too tired.

As another anon said... am I the only one who watches episodes the next day or two for various reasons, and feels like that means I lose all opportunities for discussion (in the rare event there actually is any)? It's like if you don't see the newest episode within twelve hours of its viewing, you may as well never have seen it. Which worked when I didn't work eight hours... and I technically share a computer, too, so I can't really go on LJ during lunch break.

Echoing the above comments, there's a world of difference between liking a character as a character and liking a character as a person. There are characters I find fascinating to watch, but repulsive as people. There are well-written, interesting characters with few redeeming qualities. I would not say I like them on the second level, because they're not very likable; I might, however, say that I like them as a character, because they are compelling to watch. Big difference.

I've played it (not through yet, but I've watched my partner playing through it) and I can't for the life of me figure out how a woman would work as a playable character in the game. Masculinity really seems to be the key here, and criticism of it one of the main themes. The main characters are all problematic, and not least because they are men in a world that tels men that being a man, and everything that comes with it, is the ting to be. The only really likeable character - trevor - is actually the one that functions worst in a society that is so wrong in so many ways, that everyone "functional" is made an accomplice to something evil.
Now what choice would the makers have if they wanted to have a central female character? It's either make her as flawed as the males, which would completely erase the point that present images of masculinity are problematic - or make her a role model as I'm sure Anita from Femfreq would like, which would turn the whole thing into a gender-version of communist propaganda films (and other socialist-heroist art) from last century, where the honest laborer was always the good guy, and the evil capitalists evil. Yeah, the message may be alright, sure, but the outcome is cheesy as hell, and art that lets itself be hijacked to affirm a political goal loses part of its worth in a way. Art is subversive. GTA *subverts* and comments on ideas of masculinity. Positively reinforcing positive images of femininity may be on the same side, ideology-wise, but as a theme in art, it is quite the opposite. Plus, we know every uttering already contains its opposite, so this approach would probably yield its own fair share of misogyny or marginalization. Art needs to allow for ambiguity. It needs to subvert even its own message.

TL/DR: the outcome would be either misogynist (or at lest apologetic) or a cheesefest. No, I don't like that Idea.

Some companies hate their own franchises more than they love money. Look at what Disney did to the whole Tron franchise.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing is, fiction is fiction. Facts are bent and embellished, not to mention we are discovering new things all the time, so even professional historians have to keep learning. So it's fine to enjoy historical fiction but you should know that you probably learned a lot of misinformation.

Re: Steam sale? Also, Skyrim mods.

[personal profile] saku 2014-01-07 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
it's not across accounts, as far as i'm aware, but it is stored in the steam cloud (i guess?) so even if you play on a different computer the mods will install on that computer when you start up skyrim. but i think it stays on your account specifically. if your partner has their own account then i they shouldn't end up with those mods.

you just click subscribe and then when skyrim starts up on the splash page you'll see at the bottom a little message that says downloading mod or something. after they download you press play and they should be working.

Sorry, that's what I meant. Whee medication. I meant that every user on the Steam account would have those mods, which sounds like is the case (much like the Curse client... unfortunately, unlike Curse, which is $30 a year, Steam is ... far too expensive to have separate copies of the games for my partner and myself, especially when they are new games).

(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see why this anon in particular is being told to get help. People idolize and worship all kinds of evil or evil-doing characters; Loki, Hannibal, Lucifer.

I haven't read the series myself but from looking up the guy's backstory he seems like he has a better excuse to turn out a psycho than the above three.

YANA

Tonight I may get a chance to watch Teen Wolf but everyone's already done talking about it. I'm losing interest in the show and I can't tell how much of that is because of the show and how much of it is because I don't get any fandom discussion anymore.

fwiw I chuckled at your nutrition police thing. and honestly was surprised the people reacted so poorly to it. maybe the cold weather is freezing the humor part of their brains ;)

Start a thread in the newest post after you see it (if you see it late tonight, start it tomorrow, if you see it before eight or nine, start it tonight.) There's probably still interest from other people who didn't see it immediately -- and likely from people who did who still wouldn't mind talking about it more.

Re: What's for dinner?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-07 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure! (The veggies are in halves because I split them between two meals.)

1 lamb loin chop (about a palm-sized portion of meat)
Half a medium zucchini, chopped fairly big
Half a medium onion, chopped
Half a small sweet potato, chopped (the portion should be about the size of your fist.)
1 clove garlic, chopped
piece of fresh ginger about the size of the tip of your pinky, chopped
1 bloop of olive oil for frying
Madras curry powder to taste

First, boil your chopped sweet potato until it's almost done, so you don't have to wait for it to cook properly in the frying pan.

Heat up a good non-stick frying pan -- I used my trusty cast iron -- and sear the lamb on both sizes. Turn it down and cook the lamb a little more. (Lamb is best rare or medium rare; I like it medium rare.) Add the oil and all the veggies. The pan should be hot enough that the zucchini browns a bit.

Sprinkle the curry powder on your veggies, and some on each side of the lamb. I didn't add any water, so I ended up with a nice dry curry taste.

With a piece of fruit and a glass of milk, this makes a good supper for a diabetic.

yep, but there's a super easy way to get around the hassle if your partner doesn't want them. on the splash page there's a link that says "data files" i think. if you click on it it'll show you a list of the mods you've downloaded through the workshop. you and anybody else that uses the steam account can enable and disable them whenever you want.

Oh god yes, this. I think it's part of Anna Gunn's talent as an actress that she made such a compelling character. My relationship with her character changed so much. I actually really hated her from episode one, with the way she was so disrespectful and dismissive of her husband. By the end, though I felt for her. I didn't like her, but she'd made mistakes and recognized she'd made mistakes, which was HUGE.

But I've definitely run into the 'YOU HATE SKYLER YOU ARE A MISOGYNIST' attitude out there. Mostly from tumblr. *surprise*?

I made a joke last night about an end credits scene in Frozen in which Nick Fury shows up at the end and offers Elsa a spot in the Avengers. Now I want to read something like that. Any Disney characters will do (I'd prefer Disney, not Pixar) and any explanation for their powers.

Raiden's 'heels' aren't heels, though. They move, they're appendages, like an opposable thumb. He uses them like another set of hands so he can grip his katana with his feet.

If you want manly men wearing high heels, check out just about any old school live action western. A lot of those rugged boots have 2" heels on them (or higher), and nobody ever called them girly.

lol i watch episodes like years after they air

you do miss out on big community discussions, but that doesn't necessarily mean you won't find fans to discuss them with, or have fun reading logs and comments a few months or years back

AMEN!

It bugs me that they use promo pics with hot girls, but we can´t play as them or any kind of female character.
