I agree. It's just excellent. Scares the hell out of me every time.

A sarcastic "so hetero" describes 99% of their relationship. I could talk about this all day.

I have very fond memories of this episode because it was the first Tennant episode I ever saw. I recall that (because I had only watched Nine before) I couldn't understand how anyone else could play the Doctor, surely I wouldn't enjoy this other random guy who was totally not the Doctor I knew playing him? How could I possibly believe that he was the Doctor too? Then about fifteen seconds after he appeared I was like "OH LOL THAT'S HOW" and I never had this problem with any other incarnation of the Doctor again ;)

I'm afraid that I can't judge the ep quite objectively because of my personal fondness that has nothing to do with it being comparatively good or not though. A mite too on-the-nose with the Ten/Rose shipping, I think, and somewhat less awesome as The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, but I recall being very impressed with how easily and vividly the guest starts were characterized in such a short amount of screentime.

The Empty Child is Eccleston era. :/ (And the twofer The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances are pretty much my favourite things ever.)

I admit I often forget about this two parter, even though I did find it enjoyable.

I think because I often get it confused with 42 which was a Martha and 10 episode (similar set dressing, similar doomed crew, etc.)

I also don't think it stands out as much as my favorite Ten two parter, which would be Human Nature/Family of Blood. But that's just my personal opinion.

Yesssss.

I love this two-parter. I do sometimes get it confused with 42, but I don't even care, 'cos I love that one as well.

I also think this one has stand-out music. That creaking violin piece ('The Impossible Planet') is really beautiful.

That's actually one of my favourite stories and I always feel like I can't say it because I remember the reaction at the time (in fandom) to the second part in particular being pretty negative.

But I always love stories that involve religious or supernatural figures that might actually ambiguously be whatever they claim to be - I'm not sure if I think the Beast actually is the devil, but I really enjoyed the way it was left up to you and not even The Doctor was sure at one point.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
It had some good moments but I always thought it would have been better as one episode. Human Nature and Family of Blood is Ten's big stand out two parter. I don't think The Satan Pit even comes close in terms of story, acting, character development, or terror.

It definitely ranks in my top 3 stories.

It's scary, explores some interesting issues, and there's good character stuff.

With 10's horrorish episodes, I preferred the more quiet/unsettling ones over the more direct and mostly visual ones like, let's say, "Blink." With "Empty Child/Doctor Dances" though, it was more towards the end with the OH SHIT THAT'S NOT YOUR BRO IS IT??? D: that I dug. More doomed crews and subtle creepiness though please ♥

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's one of the best in Nu!Who, I think - a monster episode that isn't really about the monster at all. (This is why "Blink" didn't work for me - it relied too much on the horror/suspense element and not enough on interpersonal stuff.) Though these episodes can get goofy at times, they ask some interestingly deep questions and are wonderful for characterisation. Everone gets their moment in the spotlight, from the crew to Ten and Rose. There are so many lovely exchanges.

(Plus, "Tell her... oh, she knows" is one of the finest, most beautifully concise pieces of writing I've ever seen in anything, ever. It tugged my heartstrings far more than any melodrama, and I'm not even a shipper.)

I enjoyed it. It was a pretty good story.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
hahaha that's because it's the WORST EPISODE OF NEW WHO EVER (including both parts)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way about "Midnight". I thought it was a perfect example as to why the Doctor needs his companions, and was overall a great episode in its attempt to display human nature.

I think there are a lot of episodes in Tennant's era that are overlooked.

I think it has got some genuinely scary bits, but in terms of writing, acting and plot, The Empty Child/Doctor Dances are far superior. In Ten's era I think the Family of Blood eps are the best, although not quite up there with the Empty Child.

I appreciate it as the greatest movie that's ever likely to be made out of the Doom games.

I dislike how in-your-face Doctor/Rose was, which is why it doesn't rate in my favourite Tennant episodes. Everything else I loved, they're among the creepiest episodes of Tennant's run.

THESE FUCKING EPISODES GAVE ME NIGHTMARES

I've *never* been scared by a TV episode before and these two scared me so much

(Anonymous) 2014-01-12 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
The second half was actually the first DW episode I ever saw. I had never even heard of it before that moment. It was one of the first times I remember being unreasonably excited about a piece of media. I love it so much in a completely biased way.

The thing that makes me like this double-ep less is the whole "Satan" thing. It rubbed me just a bit wrong, and I don't know why, because I often take interpretation of religious themes quite well.

I fucking love these two episodes--they kind of mark the transition point between when I was watching casually and when I started mainlining entire seasons at a time. I think they get a bad rap for the same reason Utopia/Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords sometimes gets a bad rap: 95% of it is amazing, but the 5% that's rotten is the climax that the entire rest of the story hangs on.

Which, hey, when it comes down to it I am totally willing to ignore how hard they dropped the ball on the design for the Satan Pit monster and the handwaving about what it even is and why Cosmic Evil from the Dawn of Time only matches the symbolism for a very narrow slice of Earth demon mythology. The rest of it--all those themes of wonder, exploration, pushing the boundaries of human understanding, ordinary people doing extraordinary things--that's still incredible, and it's strongly associated with "what I love about Doctor Who" in my head. And it uses the possibility of weird, wonderful settings to an extent that New Who usually doesn't bother with, which I appreciate a lot. (And although I'm not a huge fan of the shippy stuff, I think I would have been more amenable to Ten/Rose if they'd spent any of the rest of the season acting like they did in this one. It's one of the rare examples of them bringing out the best in each other rather than the absolute worst.)

This is one of my favourite two-parters! :D I always felt the second part dropped the ball slightly but The Impossible Planet was just awesome.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-13 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I like this too, and not just because The Damn Cat snuck behind the couch and jumped on me just when the voice was saying "Don't look behind you," scaring me out of my skin.

It just pushes a bunch of my buttons (in a good way): the writing on the skin, the idea of language that the Tardis can't translate, the security guy who doesn't make it and asking the guy at control to shut off his oxygen first, Rose trying to connect to the Ood about food service jobs, the moment she jumps up and punches the ceiling, Rose generally being a BAMF. . .in the second half I was definitely more interested in Rose's escape plans than the Doctor chatting up the Beast. (I'm more or less neutral on Rose--although the stuff that makes me less enthusiastic definitely feels like writing inconsistencies rather than organic character issues--but this was an early episode I saw of ANY Doctor Who and I really liked her in this one.)

OP it is my favorite episode(s) period after Turn Left. It doesn't really scare me, but it's a ton of fun, has really interesting things to say, and the character interaction is FANTASTIC. That the writer actually took the opportunity to develop the ensemble cast as well as he did really impressed me. So, so good.
