I'm happy for you and Imma let u finish, but a man wanting to be a good father makes him a zillion times hotter. A ZILLION.

Ichabod was technically a deadbeat dad but I think dying(ish) is the only excuse. and he woulda been a great father.

(Haha, deadbeat dad. Um, sorry.) I agree, and it's ridiculous because I don't really want children myself but daddies can be so hot to me.

DEADbeat...oh shit, ninety6tears beat me to it. Curses! I never get my zingers in on time.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I still think that it sucks he didn't know in the first place, that Katarina had to go through giving up Jeremy on her own (knowing it's her last tie to part of Ichabod) and only for that poor boy to die before his twenty somewhat odd birthday.

Of which the kid's only companion and guardian had been the doll his mother had made and given to him as an infant. Crane would've been a damn good father and that makes him even more attractive than what he is, imo.

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-01-17 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. That episode really bummed me out; I would've rather he had no kid than had a kid he never knew and died in a sad, sad way. He would've been a great dad, though.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ichabod was technically a deadbeat dad

No he wasn't, in any way. He was, for all intents and purposes, dead, and he was unaware that Katrina was pregnant. Being absent from your child's life because you don't know said child exists isn't being a deadbeat; choosing to be absent from their life because you can't be bothered is.

Hell yeah. I never wanted kids, am pathologically terrified of childbirth, but if I'd ended up with a guy like Crane, I might have gone through with it just because he'd be such a good, upstanding, committed dad. It's part of his nature to honor his commitments, even to the point of sacrificing himself, if necessary, and that makes him incredibly attractive to me.

(Yeah, I'll take the Good Guys over the Bad Boys any day.)

Okay, I'll keep him.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea who this guy is, but I know that feeling.

Hot guy/girl has kids? Instantly loses a million 'attractive' points.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure you already know and don't really care, but that's kinda misogynistic bullshit you're spreading there.

Seconded! Which is why it's fan-disservice rather than fanservice to me when characters have to take care of random babies (ala recent Supernatural) and I actually stopped watching Scrubs because at some point every episode became about pregnancies and kids.

To the anon who said misogyny is at fault: *lol* nope, just an intense dislike for small kids and all the grossness and stress involved in taking care of them. It applies to men just as much. No one has ever been made more attractive by having to wake up five times a night, cleaning up shit, being vomited on, etc. I also value independence highly (in fictional characters as well as rl people) and nothing will take that away like a baby. I mean, kudos to people who do it, thanks for taking a bullet for society and all, but I don't want to be anywhere near them.

That said, in Crane's case it doesn't really apply for me, because that kid is long gone and he never even met it.

I don't care as long as he's a good dad. True the odds are against it, as most men these days are just terrible dads, but there always has to be exceptions, and you really never know.

Well, he's not modern day, so...

Sorry about your bad experience with men?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the show, so maybe I'm misunderstanding, but I think I agree with you, OP. From what I understand, he loved (loves?) his wife very much, but to me, stealing a man from a woman is less heartless than stealing a father from a child.* As in, I feel less guilty being attracted to a married guy than I do being attracted to a married guy who has kids. So I don't know if that's where your feeling comes from, but to me "dad" = massive hands off.

Single fathers, on the other hand...

*Before y'all jump on the bandwagon, I wouldn't actually DO either of those things. I'm just talking in a fannish, fantasy sense.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
(Highlight for spoilers)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just really annoyed that storyline didn't go anywhere. What was the point of bringing up a kid if it's going to be swept under the carpet?

...my enthusiasm for the show is dwindling...

Do you really believe that's it for that storyline?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Given the way that Ichabod woke up and that they made a point to say the witches stopped Jeremy's heart and buried him alive, I'm pretty sure Ichabod's going to end up with a son only a few years younger than him walking around and someone will probably ship it.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
I totally don't buy that Jeremy is actually dead, because like you said, what's the point of bringing up a kid if it's going to be swept under the carpet?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
This show really has a thing for bringing in characters who are supposed to be super important and then killing them off. I'm hoping the kid isn't actually dead and can become a chatacter in the present.

Just curious, but can I ask why, specifically?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Is it the fact that he's a father at all? Is it the fact that his son could possibly, maybe, someday, pop up (it is Sleepy Hollow, after all)? Is it the fact that he's married (sort of) with a kid (sort of)? Or is it something else altogether?

Re: Just curious, but can I ask why, specifically?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
OP, I'm late to the party but try to explain. This would be in the case of an entirely hypothetical relationship of course.

I do not like children or want any, and while I think being a good father is a good quality in general, it's not the sort of man compatible to me. I would never date a man who has (or can't live without having) kids. In fact, te reason why one of my best friends and I didn't become "more" is the kids issue.

In case of Ichabod, it's two-fold: obviously I'd be scared the child would show up sooner or later, which would lead to a relationship dynamic I don't want. I.e., a third party who is stranger to you, but has all the affections of your partner. Rightfully, a good father makes his kids come first. But I do not want a partner who makes someone else come first over me.

Even if the child would "stay dead", then you have the issue of being with a mourning father. They would have a deep sadness I could never understand, that would put me on a whole different level from them. I mean, I understand loss, but I'll never be ble to understand love for or loss of a child (which I imagine to be horrible, but can't connect to at all).

If that makes sense.

I know that feel, but then I'm in college and not great about kids. It also relates a bit to the idea of stealing someone's attention, either from a spouse/partner or from their child. This is just going by other people's experiences with having a parent date though.
