I honestly feel sorry for those kinds of people. I would be so miserable with my life if I could not enjoy tv shows, movies, video games, and books.

Are you talking about people with anhedonia?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think you are extrapolating/exaggerating from the OP's point somewhat.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I always find it funny when people say "nitpicking/awareness of issues dampened my enjoyment of X" and people read it as "I CAN"T ENJOY ANYTHING EVER AGAIN AHHHHH".

Have you never seen some of those types on Tumblr? They watch a show and literally all they do is complain about how terrible and problematic every little thing is. They use a special brand of mental gymnastics to explain why an awesome character (ex. Mary in Sherlock) is actually terrible.

So no, when you watch a show/movie/video game and all you do is make dozens of posts of how terrible it is and how much you hate it, I don't think you can enjoy things to the same extent as someone who is not writing dozens of tumblr posts about how much they hate this thing.

This is a dumb generalization. Everyone has limits and those limits are personal and changing. Not liking ONE THING doesn't mean you just sit at home staring at the wall, and this response to every secret about not liking something is getting fucking old.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Not gonna lie, if I couldn't enjoy media, I would be dead. Escapism via books and movies especially helped save my life.

It's entirely possible to enjoy something and still critique it. It's also entirely possible to enjoy something, have your enjoyment ruined by such things as compulsory romance, yet hold out and keep watching in the hope it'd get better/ignore the stupid shitty thing you don't like. None of this would stop you from enjoying everything ever, it will just limit what you can enjoy because the things you like are in limited supply.
Like not playing a generic boring white dude or yet another goddamn love triangle.

Honestly I think it's ridiculously stupid that you "feel sorry" for people becoming more aware of the shitty aspects of media. And I feel disgusted that you'd apparently prefer to keep everything racist and sexist just so you're happy.

Personally, I feel sorry for folks who assume admitting a show they like has flaws means having to hate the whole show forever and ever. Not saying you are, but they're out there and they are legion. Trying to deal with the whole "I refuse to believe there's anything wrong in this show because I like it" thing is tiresome.

This happens to me a lot. Its why I stopped reading a lot of meta. For some shows I am all about breaking it apart and analyzing and pointing out flaws along with the good points and I can still enjoy the show, but others I just can't get over the issues. So I've learned what will and will not ruin things for me and stay away accordingly.

Hopefully you can learn something similar and enjoy other shows. Sorry this one was, for lack of a better word, ruined for you.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Sucks being aware, doesn't it? Don't worry, you can still find a way to love things that are problematic, even though it's a bit of a struggle sometimes. Fandom discussions can help (orrrr make it worse, yeah).

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's the inner academic in me, but I love being able to view my favorite media with a critical eye. Just because I like something doesn't mean I also have to blindly accept it as perfect. It only becomes a problem if the only thing you can focus on is the negative.

Same! I love critising and taking apart media so much sometimes it sounds like I'm complaining unduly but to tell the truth, the more I criticise something, the more I love it. I wouldn't look into it so much if I didn't enjoy it now, would I?

This is a good opportunity to try to continue enjoying exposure to characters you like, even if you're not wild about their stories, and turn to fanfic for more of what you seek, even if you have to dream it up yourself.

Goog character is why stayed with the show, but I'm a reader, not a writer. *sigh* My fanfics never go farther than a few scenes.

I notice when something troublesome is happening but it doesn't stop me from enjoying media. I can talk about how a show has problematic elements and still enjoy that show.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
like people are gonna tell you, you can enjoy things that have issues. within reason i guess. i mean for me there are some deal breakers but you get the idea. it is a bit disappointing to realize something you love has such shitty aspects to it but personally i've gotten to a point where i can still love something in spite of it.

Well said anon. In most situations I can still love what I love despite the realization that yes, it has problems. There's nothing wrong with that.

ignorance is indeed, bliss.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
This is why I blocked everything that has to do with social justice in my fandom. I'm a lot happier that way.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-18 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I was already one of those people who liked picking things apart to anyone willing to listen, so finding another thing to examine in shows is good. It probably depends on how much of a tolerance you have for it. If you're able to enjoy something while recognizing issues it may have, you'll probably have a better time.
