I'm pretty sure the (outward) age difference shall make this relationship too unconventional for the TV-land. Though reasonably I know it's kinda sad that romantic relationships with significant age gaps do not get much representation, I'm always glad to see a duo where the difference is noticeable, because more often than not it means that they're going to be completely platonic. I'm just, IDK, often bored by romantic storylines. And I find it hard to sympathize with characters when they fall in love.

I don't think Moffatt has an issue with age differences. I mean, the Doctor is a whole lot older than everyone anyways, and Alex Kingston is older than Matt Smith.

That being said, it always skeeves me out a bit when its a man who looks this much older than the woman. It really doesn't make that much difference, and the Doctor is the same age he was, but it has connotations for me and makes me uncomfortable. So I really don't want it to happen (and I'm not a fan of Doctor/Clara anyway).

That being said, I'm really hoping for it to be platonic. My favorite Doctor-companion relationship is the one with Donna, which is the most platonic. I didn't love Eleven and Clara together. They didn't click for me. But I have high hopes for her with Capaldi. I'm hoping for platonic with a side of mentorship.

I agree too, the age appearance skeeves me out. I don't know much about Clara (I'm pretty behind with this show) but in this pic she looks like fourteen, and he looks at least 70 so it was very "nonono" though of course they might not always appear that way...

Uh, not to be rude but what planet are you from? There's like eleventy billion examples of significantly older man/ younger woman relationships in the media,

Normally I'd say you were probably right about the age difference. But this is Moffat. I mean...hell, it'll probably be easier for him to fantasize that he's the Doctor now, so the romance will probably be even more giant and obvious.

No, there's a fair bit of it about in television.

That said: I doubt there's going to be any in this case, if only because Moffat's remarks on romantic plots were how hot he and Alex would be together.

I think I read somewhere that Clara will be getting a boyfriend, so Clara/12 won't be happening.

Whether or not that makes things better... I don't know. I guess we're going to have to see how it goes.

(Assuming that I heard correctly; it was something on tumblr, and you know how tumblr is when it comes to spreading information.)

This was legitimately the stupidest concept to ever happen in DW. And I include peekaboo Gallifrey in that assessment. Nothing stupider. Nooooooooothing.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-19 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think anyone actually was attempting to say 'biologically speaking, the first face I see I care about most!'. It's just a way of expressing "you've basically been around all of my current life, and I care about you a lot!". It's also a way of expressing to the viewer why the Doctor basically stops caring about former companions after his regeneration.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-18 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
1) That's a horrific photo of Capaldi

2) Why are the companions always women? For that matter, why are the doctors always men?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-18 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
There were male companions in Classic Who. Turlough, Adric, you could argue the Brig, when Three was trapped on Earth....plus the "pickup" companions, i.e., people recruited to help the Doctor on whatever planet or ship or space station they've landed on, who go on with their lives afterwards and are never heard from again. A lot of those were male.

New Who is nothing but blatant romcom IN SPAAAACE though. So that's why there are predominantly female companions who all swoon over the Doctor.

The companions aren't always women (though they are usually women, and if there's only one companion it's almost always a women).

"The doctors" aren't always men; the Doctor is a single person who, to date, appears to be male. The show has the option of giving the Doctor a female regeneration, and may do that at some point in the future, but it would raise questions about Time Lord gender I'm not confident would be addressed very well.

2. There have actually been several male companions in DW's history, One of his first companions was Ian Chesterton. There was also Steven, Ben, Jamie, Harry, K9 (who was a robot dog, but spoke with a male voice and was referred to as a male character; "good boy", "he/him", etc) Adric, Turlough, and Kamelion... And in the new series we had Mickey, Jack, and Rory.

Rory, Mickey, Jack, Craig, and Wilfred probably should get companion credit.

Oh, so much this. I'm not sure why, but I just like the show better with non-requited romance. (A bit of unrequited pining or one-sided UST here and there are peachy as long as it's not the main component of the character.)
philstar22: (Doctor 10 to 11)

[personal profile] philstar22 2014-01-18 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind it sometimes. But when every companion and half the one off or supporting characters are in love with the Doctor, it is annoying and unbelievable. Romantic attraction is not the only reason to want to travel through space and time, and the Doctor isn't going to be everyone's type.

I really don't think they will. The age difference is too great this time, it would feel wrong. Not that it's that different than 9 and Rose, but i think that it feels more obvious.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-01-18 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I think Twelve looks WAY older than Nine. Rose also doesn't look as young as Clara, imo. I like Nine x Rose and never gave much thought to the appearance of age difference - thinking about it now, they look to be at most 25 years apart (look, obviously, being the key word, since we all know the Doctor is much older) and I didn't even really notice that at first - and it's a thing that usually really bothers me.

Looking at Nine now, I suppose he looks like he could be in his 50s, but at first he looked 35 or 40 to me, and I think maybe it had to do with the way he dressed and acted? idk

I don't think so. Thanks god Moffat isn't into awful Doctor/companion love like RTD was. One Rose was too much.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2014-01-18 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
There was some ridiculous romantic tension on the Pond front that got resolved midway.
philstar22: (Doctor 10 to 11)

[personal profile] philstar22 2014-01-18 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
He isn't into the Doctor reciprocating the feelings, but he seems to believe that everyone is in love with the Doctor even more than RTD did. Amy crushed on him, Clara does, and a whole lot of one-off characters do as well.

To be completely honest, I hope they DO have romantic tension because I think apparent age differences are hot (I thought Matt and Alex Kingston looked hot together too).

Fingers crossed. Then again I've kind of lost all hope in this show until they rotate the writers again. My fingers are also crossed that RTD comes back!
