So i just got insurance for the first time in...7 years or so (thanks Obamacare!). So I want to get a doctor's appointment to get myself checked out for the first time in 5 or so years.

Is it rude to just make a list of stuff you think is wrong with you/having problems with (bad knee, hip sometimes hurts when I walk, bump on the back of head, dry skin, etc)? Also, can you just ask a doctor to run your BP, cholesterol, and all that other stuff?

Totally normal, especially if you say you haven't been to the doctor in a while. Asking for a blood panel (lipids, blood sugar, etc) is not only normal, it's recommended, even if you feel healthy, so you can have an official baseline, and catch a potential something that's not yet symptomatic.

If you feel like you have several issues, you might want to see if you can 'double book', just to make sure you have enough time to get through it all. Most doctors I've seen only allot 15 minutes or so.

Absolutely write down all of your questions! That's what I do and I go to the doctor every year. Write down anything and everything and feel free to ask them.

Generally, my yearly physical includes blood work, weight/height check, blood pressure, pulse, etc. As far as blood work, I usually have to go a week before hand to have the blood drawn, this way we can discuss the results while we're in the physical because I have two things they just monitor every year.

So ask your doctor when you book what their procedure is for blood work and if it is a fasting blood work. Mine is usually fasting so that they get an accurate read on blood sugar and cholesterol, I believe.

Hope this helps! And yay for having insurance.

It's not rude at all, it's what doctors are there for! They should be able to listen to all your health concerns and give you answers or suggest you see a specialist or something. They're not gonna be like "why is this person asking me, a doctor, medical questions?"

It's not rude at all. On the contrary, it's very helpful to make a list so you don't forget anything while you're there.

Requesting tests is also not frowned upon unless you don't have a real reason for the tests to be run. Personally, I would say (and I'm sure most physicians would agree with me) that not having a full workup done in seven years is a good enough reason for you to request all the blood work you need.

Congratulations!! Sadly I am too poor for Obamacare. I had great hopes for it. Alas.

But yeah, I actually think it's a great idea to go in with a list. That way you don't forget anything! And if you explain to the doctor that you haven't been to a doctor in years and have a list of things you'd like to talk about, then they should be totally understanding and cool with it. Good luck!

Have you tried Medicaid? Or does your state have limited access/one of those weird loopholes that exempts them from Medicaid?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
My state has very limited access and actually has cut medicaid and state aid by a bunch lately. My hopes are hanging on our next state election and hopefully a new governor. Well, that and finding a better and full time job.

I'm sorry to hear that, nonny. I hope things go well for you (or at least that you are able to move to a state with better healthcare options soon).

I only ever go to the doctor when I have a specific problem, and no one ever seemed to have an issue with it. I always thought going in with things to mention was pretty normal?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
You really should be getting a yearly wellness check up. That's normally where they catch things that could turn deadly.

I think it's pretty normal, otherwise I'd forget important details for the doctor. For the last bit, I don't see why not? I've gone in specifically to ask for a blood test and the like.

OT, but I swear this is the first time I've seen "thanks Obamacare" being used without irony or as a punchline...

(Anonymous) 2014-01-22 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno. Assuming my insurance paperwork shows up in time for me to make my first payment, that's pretty much what I'll be doing. Except it'll be my first general check-up in, uh... fourteen years? Something like that. And I haven't had any blood work done since I was a baby, I've never had a pap smear, I haven't had my shots in almost twenty years... I wish Obamacare plans would offer dental, as well. My teeth are in worse shape than the rest of me.
