BBC!Sherlock fandom=/=canon fandom

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-01-23 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
The fandom you're describing is for a show where Irene Adler outsmarts nothing and no one, people are killed by delayed-action stabbing that they couldn't feel (which would be a little more believable if severe internal bleeding weren't a plot point in the very next episode), Mrs. Hudson is so oblivious that she thinks Sherlock and John were a couple for apparently 3 years, Sherlock is so stupid that he doesn't think to check to see if Moriarty is actually dead, and Moriarty is such a moron that he doesn't look over the side of the roof to check if Sherlock is actually dead. That's the fandom that hosted a meetup a year ago where a girl stabbed me in the arm with a pen so hard that she actually drew blood because I dared say that Granada and Jeremy Brett were better than Beeblock and Benedict Notevenclose. And maybe I'm a little bitter and maybe I'm overreacting. But seriously, I got stabbed in the arm.

I probably should have phrased things differently (I've got really bad foot-in-mouth disease) but yeah, what she did was just not acceptable. Thank you for your words, though. I saw all the replies and got scared that I started a flame war.

Wow, what? Just. What the actual fuck?

There's no overreaction for being physically assaulted for having a certain fandom opinion.

Thank you. I do feel a bit less silly now. I mean, after it happened I immediately went home and felt like a coward. So your words are definitely appreciated.

If it makes you feel a little better even as a fan of BBC Sherlock I wouldn't have stabbed you with a pen, I would've agreed with you. As an adaption I do prefer the Brett version. I mean sure, it seems I would've risked wrath by pen stabbing as well...

Thinking back on it, I probably came across as condescending and overdramatic, but seriously, that still maybe warrants a couple of mean comments, not physical assault.

Blimey. Did you report it/her? You do have the consolation of being completely right, of course.

This was before the actual meet-up while we were getting food, so I wouldn't even have known who to go to. I didn't even end up really going to the meet-up. I just kind of walked around the hotel hallway, pausing at the door every once in a while, before giving up and going back to my car.

I don't blame you for being bitter. No one should get stabbed in the arm (or anywhere) because they prefer a different TV series.

I love BBC Sherlock, enjoy Granada's Sherlock Holmes, and love plenty of other versions of Holmes and Watson... I think it's insane how serious people get over which one is better. Why can't people enjoy what they enjoy without other people taking so much umbrage over it all?

I'm pretty sure she had other issues. It's just that her insanity chose to manifest itself at that particular moment.

I... what?! How would anyone consider that an appropriate reaction? Man you have every right to be bitter.

I have no idea, either. I made a joke about roleplaying Brett's Holmes because of her initials and she said that she'd never roleplay him because BC is so much better. I sighed dramatically (still thinking we were joking) and said that BC would never be Holmes as long as people still remembered Brett's performance. I'll admit that was pretty condescending, but at worst I thought I'd get a remark about being tasteless.

Hindsight being 20/20, I mistook her lack of marbles for excitement over the meet-up. -facepalm-

....so glad I dumped that fandom when I did. So glad.

(Which one of them was it who stabbed you btw? Username begin with an R?)

Re: BBC!Sherlock fandom=/=canon fandom

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-01-23 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think we ever talked about usernames, but I remember her initials were "RP" because I made a joke about RPing as Brett's Holmes, which got us started on the whole argument to begin with. If you're trying to avoid her, I think her last name was something flower-related. Pollen, maybe? I don't know about her first name besides that it started with R and had two syllables (maybe, I can't count). And that's assuming she was using her real name (in retrospect, I mistook bat-shit insanity for excitement). Honestly, we were lining up to get food before the meet-up even started. I didn't talk to her that much.

Holy shit, that's an insane reaction. As one who has been stabbed with a pencil over a book, you have my deepest condolences.

I'd be bitter over fandom too if I was you.

Oh, no, I was fine. It was honestly just a flesh wound (that stung like that pen-wielding bitch) but I was so pissed off that I pushed her harder than I meant to off of me and she lost her balance. Both of us got kicked out of the restaurant and I've never seen her again.

What whaaaa—I'm just going to the echo the general THE HELL here about the nutcase. How can you not come away resenting the fandom for that. I hate that people like her exist, and that they fixate on stupid bullshit to justify the way they act and "socialize." Psycho fans ffs.

Like you said though, the bbc is absolutely nothing like the canon for folk to even start giving the Beeb's credit for things that actually happen in the books. Irene, Mary, Sherlock even, they're similar in name only basically.

That is really awful. I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad experience - people can be wtf crazy. If it makes you feel better, at least you were right, Jeremy Brett is a better Sherlock Holmes than Cumberbatch.
