You're not alone in that, OP. Same here.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-23 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
No argument from me, OP. But I'm not a huge fan of organized religion in general.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-23 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Not the most offensive thing ever, but kind of silly.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, but... who is this, and which fandom?

Sister Mary-I-Don't-Remember from Sister Act.

Is this Sound of Music? Hm. Well...I suppose some people could take it offensively. That being said I've never really understood why anyone would join a convent...joining a religious cloister is totally outside my area of interest.

There's nothing offensive about it, OP. Being a nun (or any other form of devoting yourself to something that doesn't exist) is indeed wasting your life.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
You obviously don't know anything about the kind of work real nuns do these days.

I'm weirdly surprised at the amount of people who think that being a nun is wasting your life. Most nuns don't just sit around all day praying. Most of them are out in the community, dedicating their lives to helping people. I'm not saying that you need to be a nun or something to help people, but they do lots of good work. They're hardly wasting their lives.

I'm not a fan of organized religion, but I can't judge anyone who went out of their way to dedicate their lives to the service of other people.

It's her life to waste. And if it's something she wants to do or something she feels gives her purpose, then it's not a waste as far as she's concerned.

So long as it's something they can do and so long as it doesn't hurt anyone, then a person should live their life as best suits them, regardless of stances on religion or anything else. Other people's judgments on what's a 'waste' shouldn't come into it.

Agreed. And yeah, this is def a 'secret' because people will get super offended by this.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely agree.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I have nothing to say except: it's her life, she can do what she chooses with it, what's a waste to some is the very thing that gives others meaning

Second: I love nuns in movies/TV. Like Call the Midwife, I love all the nuns in that show and the fact that they're based on real people just makes my day.

lol it's ironic that this is on f!s because to many people what we are doing here is exactly 'wasting our lives' (or at least parts of them)

Yup, I can totally understand why this is a secret. That being said, it gives her contentment, happiness, and spiritual fulfillment. She's doing exactly what she wants to be doing, and is helping people by doing it. How can you call that a waste?

A waste to you. Not to her. Trust me; your life would probably be a waste to me because I bet we aren't interested in the same things.* We don't have the same goals

And you know what? That's fine.

Because, you see, everyone is different and has different desires. We're not all you with your opinions and your dreams.

But no, apparently people can dedicate a large portion of their lives to fandom where people obsessively worship shows and that's fine. The moment people dedicate a large portion of their lives to religion and worship that suddenly they're wasting their supposed "potential". That's terribly conceited, don't you think? You're so superior that you know what's better for someone's life than they do?

I'm sorry I'm so mad at you OP but this secret hits very close to home. A friend of mine is catholic and she is becoming a nun and it's been a... painful process.

*It's not because I realize your life has meaning to you and that's beautiful. I’m also not an asshole.

My aunt actually left her convent for this reason.
It really depends which order you join and where you're located though.
The Franciscans in my area have strong ties to the school and most of them were teachers and assisted in the running of the parish before they retired.

Some are very isolated though. My aunt was hoping to be allowed to work at a hospital or travel as a missionary, but instead they had her cleaning things and spending every day in silence.
She felt she could do more, so she left.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you OP about certain folks taking their vows, even though I don't know this particular character.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Thing is: What should she be doing instead, in your opinion? Become another hopelessly unsuccessful singer in a world where everyone and their cat thinks they're the next Whitney Houston? Become a social worker? Well she already is, just a church-backed one. Also, not everyone wants to fuck all the time, so mandatory celibacy isn't exactly a deep rooted terrible problem for everyone.

it reminds me of that ep in Midsomer Murdres

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
The monastery was very small with 4 nuns living there, because being a nun is not very popular nowadays. There was a young woman who wanted to become a nun; her parents were against it. In the end of the ep. she became one anyway.

I don't even know the fandom, but I'm inclined to agree because I this knee jerk "ugh, get away from me!" reaction any time I see a nun.

The wonders of being schooled - and, well, pretty much raised - by fucked up nuns.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I'm sorry everyone's jumped on you. I don't think that's offensive at all.

I was raised Catholic, went to Catholic schools, now know several nuns through my job, and I can say that they are without a doubt the most arrogant, judgmental, self-absorbed people I've ever known. They treat everyone else like they're beneath them, and they act as if they can do no wrong because 'they've got God on their side'. They are horrible, horrible fucking human beings.

I swear, the easiest way for someone to become an atheist is to be raised Catholic.
