It's time for a video game thread!

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-01-29 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
In this thread we post the games we are playing or have recently beaten and rate them. Disagree/agree/discussing why you felt that way optional. Oh, and please tag spoilers if you post them. Mine are:

BioShock Infinite - 9.8/10

Army of Two: Devils Cartel - 6.3/10

LIMBO - 4/10

Crysis 3 - 6.9/10

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons - 9.6/10

Tomb Raider - 8.5/10

I haven't played any of yours haha

Pokemon X/Y - 7/10, I didn't care for many of the characters but I loved the graphics, the world and the storyline was entertaining.

Dishonored - 9/10, Nice and artistic and the plot managed to (rightfully) piss me off

Fable 3 - 1/10. The dog is nice.

Wildstar - 7/10, I fucked around in my friends beta-game and now I want it. Graphics <3

I dunno if Dishonored quite rated a 9/10 for me... but that's mostly because I saw the "twist" coming from many leagues away and it kind of put a damper on my feels.

Also as much as people orgasm online about the combat it felt unnatural and oddly swishy to me, if that makes sense? I play a lot of FPS titles and I have grown very accustomed to games that have a little bit of "drag" to the movement (as near as I can figure, a sort of extended controller response time to mimic natural reaction speeds). If it's perfectly synced to joystick movement it feels kind of floaty and strange to try to move the character around. Dishonored had a lot of this going on, and it threw me off on multiple occasions.

Man Wildstar looks like something I'd really enjoy, I want to play a bunny lady or one of the little psychotic rabbit-things, but I already have one sub game and can't afford another. Here's hoping they might free-to-play some bits of it so I can try it out.

I have no ratings to offer, but I'm finally playing Bit.Trip Runner on the Wii and am considering restarting (again) Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. I was chugging right along, and then I forgot to save between doing some awesome things and dying and haven't had the will to play in about 8 months.

No, I am not current on games. In fact, sometimes I still bust out Star Wars: Battlefront II for the original Xbox (which I still have, though it's only plugged in when I want to play games that glitch on the 360).

Games I've been playing in the last 3 months:

Lone Survivor Director's Cut: 7/10 (fun to play on the Vita, but overall kind of more of a pain than most of the surhors it imitates)

Demon's Souls: 7/10 (Not quite as good as Dark Souls but still fun -- need to get back into it though)

Injustice: Gods Among Us: 9/10 (First fighting game I've cared about since Primal Rage and I actually had fun with it!)

Outlast: 7/10 (Reminds me a lot of horror games from 10 years ago like Manhunt, which is its saving grace as it's another fucking Amnesia-style "can't defend yourself" first person wusser and the ending is shit)

Metro 2033: 7.5/10 Feels clunky, but atmospheric as hell.

Metro Last Light: 9/10 Huge improvement, though the DLC is by and large unnecessary.

Batman: Arkham Origins: 8/10 Despite a few issues, still pretty good. God forbid we have more games like Arkham City, right?

Skyrim: 9/10 (Absolutely destroys Morrowind and Oblivion. Wish the quests were better though.)

Re: It's time for a video game thread!

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-01-29 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I fucking love the Metro series. And I feel like you're about spot on with your ratings there. Nolan North as Pavel pretty much made the game for me.

I'd only give Skyrim 8.5/10 because once you're about 400 hours into it and trying to get those last trophies the quests start to really feel like grinding. Also the same 20 or so voices for everyone in the game really starts showing.

I'm also hella jelly you have a PC that can run Outlast decenty.

Assassin's Creed IV-9/10
Saints row 4-8/10

Re: It's time for a video game thread!

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-01-29 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
And you just reminded me how much I really need to play Saints Row 4. Thanks. Thanks for that.

Is Saints Row a series that you need to play every game to get? The last few Saints Row games have looked like good fun but I also don't want to buy and play all the games; that's daunting. (And I don't have the time right now anyway.)
elaminator: (The Last Of Us: Joel & Ellie (horseback))

Re: It's time for a video game thread!

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-01-29 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
The Last of Us - 10/10 (Better than I could have hoped for! Superb game-play and acting; thrilling story. The only complaint I have about LOU is that sometimes there's a bit too much fighting, but it didn't bother me enough to reduce the score.)

The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim - 8/10 (Skyrim doesn't get a higher score because of its abundance of bugs and glitches, but given the depth and scope of the game I deem them understandable. It's an impressive game with SO much to do, but it can be tedious at times.)

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - 7.2/10 (NGL, this game is a fucking mess, but it's still good fun and the universe is wonderful; had it been properly finished it could've been a 9.)

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag - 8.5/10 (The game-play was brilliant, but BF feels more like a pirate game than an AC game. The cast was fantastic, but the story didn't pick up until well into the game; until the last couple hours this was one of my least favorite AC stories.)

God of Blades - 7.6/10 (An addicting Android/iTunes game. Not a lot of story, but great game-play and interesting visuals. It's way too short.)

Dishonored - 10/10 (Almost perfect! A wonderful challenge and compelling game-play and story.)

Tomb Raider - 9.2/10 (Surprisingly well polished game with a solid story and exhilarating game-play.)

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - 9.4/10 (Insane game-play but also stupidly, ridiculously fun in a way few games are. Also...Raiden is fucking hot.)

Re: It's time for a video game thread!

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-01-29 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Hahhaha for me the bugs are part of what makes Skyrim good. It just wouldn't be the same if I didn't have 40 or so copies of the same character milling around together in a mob every time I visit Whiterun.

I believe I have already commented on my issues with Dishonored, but I did think it was pretty great despite them.

I scored Tomb Raider lower because of the compulsory multiplayer trophies for one of the shittiest multiplayers I have ever seen implemented in any videogame. The single player campaign is just fine and there's just no reason to tack on that mess of an L4D lookalike.

Completely agree on TLOU, Skyrim, DH and MGR (those are the only ones I played out of that list.) Your ratings are spot on -- TLOU is basically my AAA GOTY.

Definitely agree on TLOU score, I'm still working my way through it but it is so very good, it's one of the games where I love the story.

Only managed to play a bit of Tomb Raider but I liked what I saw, might have to get a copy and actually finish the whole thing one day.

Hmmm. I should have expected that Raiden comment. ;)

Assassin's Creed II - 4/10 so far. Beautiful art, but kinda repetitive and boring as I find it's hard to find the next story moving task start-point among so many streets that look the same so I'm stuck wandering around just trying to find viewpoints to expand.

Re: It's time for a video game thread!

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-01-29 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I have only played the first one and a bit of the third, but I wasn't that thrilled with the former. Imo, AC3 is where it actually starts to get good.

Oh, I loved LIMBO but a lot of that is because the imagery left a really strong impression on me. I'm actually a bit embarrassed that I had such a strong emotional reaction to the ending and some of the stranger events. If the art style doesn't hook you there's not much to recommend LIMBO over other 2D puzzle-platformers.

Right now I'm playing Pokemon Y and Terraria. I'm awful at rating, so I'll just say I enjoy both of them immensely. I love the new affection mechanic in Pokemon Y; it helps makes the Pokemon feel like pets and not just options in a really involved rock-papers-scissors game. And I just like digging around for caves in Terraria. Building stuff is okay, and I've gotten slightly more ambitious in my building designs, but I still find the most joy in digging as deep as I can and coming across underground houses.

Mild spoilers for LIMBO

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-01-29 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately for LIMBO, the entire time I was playing it I was comparing it to Journey. That alone left it looking like an artistically disingenuous mess which was dark for the sake of being dark rather than to send any profound message. Also the controls stink. If I had played it first, I might have had a better reaction to it.

I will admit that the first time I saw a dead body I reacted a bit to it, but the more it wore on, the more it wore on me. :|

Mass Effect 2 - 8/10: I enjoyed a large chunk of it, I love the world-building in these games and the characters, there are a few writing hiccups with the story in some places but overall I think they've done a good job.

Infamous: 2/10 - I'm actually sad that I don't like this as much as I thought I would(I love superheroes and this game looked right up my alley). I love, love, love the gameplay, the powers are super-fun to mess around with. But I cannot for the life of me stand Cole, he is the most boring character I have ever played in a video game and I just... No, you can't make me play as him. I WONT.

The Last of us - 9/10: I'm still playing through this so this isn't my overall rating for it but I am really, really enjoying what I've played so far. I like the characters, I love the story, the environments are gorgeous to look at. Really this game is just good.

Borderlands 2 - 8/10: I'm not into shooters typically but my other half prodded me over the winter holidays to start playing it and I am really enjoying myself. Granted I've picked Zero because sniping is how I enjoy FPS's, but I'm liking everything so far about the game, bar my characters squishiness, but that's probably just because I suck at shooters.

Left 4 Dead 2/Left 4 Dead - 7/10: I'm just enjoying running around killing zombies as a snarky motherfucker tbh, it's a silly game but I'm having fun. Plus I like the maps.

Pokémon Y - 8/10: I am pretty easy to please with pokémon games tbh and I love the little things in this, getting to pet/play with your pokémon, avatar customizability, the nicely updated graphics. It's all good.

What I remember most about Infamous is how much fun it was, but that being said...I remember shit about Cole. I'm not even kidding, his personality is just a blank slate for me. Granted, I played years ago and never even finished, but I feel like I should remember something about him besides his appearance....

So maybe you're right.

I'd still give it at least a 6.5 or 7 for the game-play (plus the collecting was really fun!), but I can't say I blame you.

Oh god Borderlands 2 sucked up my life last year. I haven't played it for a few months, but from like, January to November it was almost the only game I was playing. x_x Also: Zer0 is the best. :>

Left 4 Dead/L4D2 is a blast. I've never gotten tired of it; it's one of my favorite games of this gen, even though there's not much to it beyond SHOOT ZOMBIES HELP FRIENDS. I'm easy to please, I suppose.

Final Fantasy XIV 2.0, 9.6/10 ....I'm still playing it five months later, aren't i? ;)

Saints Row IV, 8/10. So fun.

Metal Gear Rising, 9.5/10 because I can and I played it way too much.

I'd score more, but I haven't played enough of my recent acquisitions....

A Link Between Worlds - 8/10. Great little game, but the plot felt very thin until you got to the very end. Soundtrack is absolutely superb, though, and the composer seriously needs to keep working on Zelda titles.

Pokemon XY - 9/10. Aside from a few minor downsides (no Dark-type gym for the gazillionth time in a row, not many new Pokemon, pace feels uneven), this felt like a really, really good addition to the series, and I love a lot of the new features (Mega-evos, Fairy types, POKEMON AMIE <3 ). Also, I cannot stop Wonder Trading send help.
