Adulting That You Can't Do

I can't light matches. Or more specifically, I won't light matches and even holding on to them is scary and I tend to blow out/douse a lit match within a second or two. I CANNOT WITH FIRE.

But this is annoying to everyone around me because we have a gas-range stove that needs to be relit all the time, and apparently being able to work with matches is something you have to be able to do as An Adult. Which I am, legally-speaking and have been for a good while.

So what grown up stuff that other people do can you not do?

I am a pretty miserable cook. I still can't drive. It is a big damper on my life but I am terrified of driving. One day. One day.

I'm sort of the same (pyrophobic), but also sort of the opposite. In that I can't use lighters, or at least normal ones, because the flame is literally sparked right next to my finger and I keep thinking I'm setting my finger on fire and I can't, BUT I can use long matches, because the flame is sparked at the other end of the wood from my fingers. So long as I light stuff quickly, long matches are a thousand times better to me than lighters.

I started thinking as to how to answer and realized that I can do everything. Which is sad. Tons of decision-making in childhood, I expect.

Oh, okay, I cannot cut sour apples with metal knives. But that's more of a sensory quirk than anything else.

I can't drive. Where I live most people get their provisional license at about 17. I missed the boat with that one so I've decided to wait until I'm 25 so I don't have to complete the mandatory 120hrs of supervised driving that anyone younger has to do. Only 1 more year to go.

I can't drive. I can't cook anything beyond plain pasta. I don't know anything about politics or finances or how to do taxes or pay rent. I can only do very basic laundry.

I'm really still a child in every way except, you know, my age. It's disgusting.

Add me to list of people who can't drive. I'm trying to learn but it's kind of terrifying.

I also get really stressed out when it's time to pay bills. The only one I have to deal with right now is my student loan payments and my anxiety gets really bad every time.

I can't deal with gas stoves or anything gas related. I'm terrified that I'll let too much gas out and it'll blow up in my face. Thus, I too can barely deal with matches, since it's a double whammy of holding fire near my fingers and getting it close to the gas while at the same time not letting too much gas out because I FREAK OUT.

I have a stove lighter, but in my old house my family insisted on matches.

I can't drive but part of that is because I live in a big city where public transport is readily available so I don't actually need to, Lord help me if I move somewhere where I do need to though because I will be screwed.

I have no idea how to do taxes, I'm shit with numbers as it is and I am not looking forward to the day where I have to figure that shit out.

There is so MUCH I just don't get and even living alone and having done so for some time, I still feel like an imposter when I'm chatting about "adult" subjects like rent, budget, etc.

I cannot open wine bottles to save my life. That is, I can open them, but the corks always come out looking mangled. Once it's opened for the first time, I'll be ok, but that first time...

Wash dishes. Most other chores I'm ok with, but for some reason dishes just gross me out and I can't stand doing them.

Fill up a gas tank. I'm sure it's not hard to learn, I've just never needed to. I don't drive because it's too damn expensive here.

I'm the same with matches. Those lighters with the long... neck/stem things? The only things I will ever use to light anything. I refuse to let flames get that close to my skin.

I can't use a knife properly. Or scissors, for that matter. Idk, I hold things in weird ways.

I am also incapable of getting dead bugs out of the house. I don't know if I think it's going to become a zombie and attack me or what, but even if I manage to get close enough to kill it, I still can't get close enough to sweep or pick it up and toss it in the trash. Ughhhhh bugs lhkaslfhaf

Well I can do it if I must but I really, really hate making doctors' appointments.

Also, opening the door when I'm not properly dressed and have no make-up on yet.

And I still hate buying sanitary products even though I know there is no reason for it.

Though I also noticed that I have this weird thing where I am terribly anxious doing a lot of things UNLESS I'm doing them for someone else. Like, I hat talking on the phone with important people if it's my own business, but if I have to call in the name of someone else, I have little to no problem and even seem to sound pretty competent most of the time...

Oh man, OP. Are you me? I cannot handle lighting matches either, I'm just so paranoid about them. I can use a freaking soldering torch no problem in my jewelry class, but I am afraid to use matches. It's WEIRD.

Also taxes. How do you taxes.

I really suck at making baked/jacket potatoes. I'm impatient when it comes to setting them going when I get home (I can't use the timer on the oven, either) and doing them in the microwave is a no-go (caused a small fire one time that meant we had to get a new microwave. Would rather avoid that reoccurring!)
