Yeah, I'm not saying she's beyond criticism, but it does seem that a lot of the vehemence of the reaction does come down to "She's saying nasty stuff about OUR GAMES!!!!" massive over-defensiveness, or in some cases "She's a girl saying nasty stuff about OUR GAMES and NOT BEING A DUDE!!!!!" It's frustrating.

Gamer culture is so fucking dumb sometimes.

I think she is a moron who steals videos from people on the internet and pretends she has played those games. I also think all of her 'good points' and arguments are things you could find in any freshman college course paper.

I'm not going to defend the first part (and I really don't care about her either way), but on the second, sometimes it doesn't matter that you're not saying something that no one has heard before, sometimes it helps just to be willing to try to reach different audiences.

Thank you! I remember being really disillusioned and angry when I found out all the things you're mentioning in this comment thread, and it makes me mad how many people either ignore those things, or deny them, or act like they don't matter.

She is a con who is in it for the money and the fame.

I can't stand that she has so many people fooled and they say that they don't care that she lied about being a gamer but think she makes a point. No, she is flinging things against the wall hoping it will stick and people will find it interesting. Do you think she actually believes in what she is doing? She has found a shtick that has gained her popularity, she is going to keep saying it even if she doesn't believe it. Like I said, she is a con.

I think the problem a lot of us have with Anita is she just collected a shitton of cash for her "research" that really didn't feel warranted. She made some good point, but I still see her as a bit of a scam artists.

A lot of the people criticizing her are fucking sexists and assholes who deserve to be kicked to death (unfortunately we don't actually deserve to kick people to death, such is the human condition) but there are some important problems with her work, and as a self-identified academic she has to be open to that criticism.

My biggest problem with her is that she seems to lack an in-depth understanding of a lot of the games she's talking about (I don't give a fuck if she's a "real gamer" whatever that means, but you need to know a text to properly analyze it. And a video game is a "text" as sure as any book, document or film is.

She also talks about sexism but completely divorces that from any kind of cultural or historical context. She'll talk about a game from the eighties and then talk about something that came out last year as if they are contemporary. She'll talk about games produced in Japan and games produced in the West and then act as if the cultural context is the same. That's SLOPPY AS FUCK. If I tried to pull that I'd rightfully be pulled down a peg.

Honestly she encompasses a lot of the problems I have with Women's Studies as a discipline--not its focus on women,that's awesome, but the fact that they pretend a focus is a discipline and then often fail to build any analytical skills beyond ideological purity. There's a reason I'm a feminist scholar who studies women in history but run screaming from that shit. It's dangerous.

I honestly was much more interested in what she had to say before the whole "Tropes vs Women" thing. At least then, she was making points (good ones and bad) that hadn't been run into the ground. Like we honestly needed her to tell us that the "damsel in distress" trope portrays women as helpless...

(also, she's only like 1/18th as bad as some of the self-professed feminists on tumblr, so I think the ire directed at her is a serious misuse of rage)

I don't like her, I think she kind of ripped her backers off by producing a video series that while very slick is ridiculously poorly researched and tends to ignore anything that undermines the strawman argument it's trying to make. But that doesn't really warrant the level of abuse she's gotten.

I'm not actually sure why this is much of a secret. She does make some pretty good points for games in general ...she just fails where most feminist critics fail in that she doesn't have much of an emphasis on examples of games with really strong female characterization, and she fails to consider that in some ways gaming is way more feminist than other media.

For my part in the games I tend to like I can think of more examples where female characters kick ass and pass the Bechdel test than any other form of medi. I can also absolutely think of games and entire genres where that tends not to be true, and that's a fair criticism.

And yeah, she could stand to do more research since some of her points really don't stand up to fact-checking.

And she could also stand to point out that the cultural double standard of the Expendable Man comes heavily into play in videogames, and that could really stand to change as well.

tl;dr you're not wrong, there are just a lot of arguments that go into why she's not really one hundred percent correct. ...Unfortunately overshadowed by the reaction of the worst minority of gamers with the whole death threats... thing.

Yup. Agree with you all the way. She's not perfect, she's never claimed to be perfect, and the hate she gets is scary and ridiculous.

Honestly I feel I could do a better job than her. :/ That's just depressing because I have no expertise in making videos or creating scholarly feminist critisisms of new media.

Agreed.

She's not perfect, and I disagree with some of her commentary, and the way she's gone about things.

But the level of abuse she received was completely disproportionate, and only serves to reinforce her point - that there are a lot of sexist douchebags in the gaming community, who feel entitled to special treatment.

(It also shows that there are lot of gamers who have a kneejerk reaction to the slightest criticism of 'their' games, but you can find this across fan communities in general.)

I hate how the hate and rape threats have legitimized her. Even in this thread there are people using them to justify her half assed approach. It doesn't prove that she has a point, it just proves that there are shitty people in the world.

A large part of why she got so much money is because of those rape threats. Sometimes shitty people hate less shitty people.

I always feel like she's very 101, introduction to sexism in media, and I don't always agree with all of her conclusions, but honestly, even if I did disagree with her conclusions, the level of misogyny leveled at her is just insane, and says more about sexism in gaming culture than her videos themselves honestly.

That money she took should've went towards buying her own capture equipment and videogames, instead of stealing videos wholesale.

I would value her opinion so much more if she would take the time, effort, and use that money in the right way.
