Well, I guess the other Big Decision she made that helped determine her course was threatening to eat the berries with Peeta.
But even so, in many ways her course was set and she just had to ride it out. I don't think that takes away from her character - I just think her story was largely defined by, basically, how she was used by the various Powers That Be.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 01:07 am (UTC)(link)This this this.
I love Katniss. She's kickass, but the last book especially was SO FRUSTRATING to read. Having your main character cutting herself from the action during a good chunk of the book isn't a very good thing when there is so much things going on that a reader wants to hear about!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 02:03 am (UTC)(link)I also found her to be whatever the plot needed her to be, when it needed her to be. If she needed to be smart, she put things together no one else did, otherwise she missed so many things in the name of foreshadowing.
But oh my God, yes, she was an atrocious narrator and I hated the books largely because I just wanted her to shut up! I mean, I had other issues with the books, but her narration was the worst.

The problem is that I don't think I will be able to stand FFXIII if it was narrated by someone who writes like Collins, and have internal dialogues like Katniss.
My other issue is the one that I have with lots dystopian stories written by writers of first world countries. I can't explain this well, except that I got the vibe that Collins have never truly lived in a disordered society and it shows.

I think it's a pretty hard theme to miss, tbh. But uh, apparently people seem to miss it.
But like... the climatic moments of each book revolve around Katniss saying "fuck it, I'm not playing your games" and reclaiming her power after everyone has been trying to use her as a pawn.
I always thought this was the point and was confused by the meta.
Like, seriously, her only goal is to keep her family safe. That's what I liked about her character, that she isn't someone who set out to change the world at all, she was just the person to fall into the role because someone needed to fill it.
I was so confused about people complaining about her lack of agency. Did they not realize that was how she was supposed to be?
That said, I actually didn't catch the symbolism with the mockingjay. Thanks for pointing that out, OP! :D

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 02:36 am (UTC)(link)One of my friends went from "OMG Katniss fukkin roxxx" to "why is this stupid bitch leading this crazy mission like this?!?!?!" before settling on "oh well, it's just another crappy YA novel, Battle Royale was probably better."

But when she does react, she tends to be made of win, like the line in my icon comes up. Actually, her proactive moments tend to not end all that well.
