I think John and Sherlock switch a lot. Thor and Loki, eh. Tony/Loki are true switches.

I do sort of agree that preferences for sexual dynamics are often quite predictable.

Every Destiel fic I've read has Dean as the bottom but I can't quite pinpoint the reason for it

This is the greatest secret I have ever seen in my life. I think you would be an awesome drinking buddy, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
It's pretty even in D/C fandom, tbh. People will say there's more of one than the other, but really it's got a good mix of both. Plus it goes in waves - there'll be more bottom!Dean for half a season, then more bottom!Cas in the other half. I think it largely depends on which of them was a jerkass to the other roughly 3-6 months back in canon. Fandom will make the jerkass top more often, it just takes it a while to catch up to canon.

:)

And then some fandoms it goes in stages. Back in season 1 and 2 of Teen Wolf you'd have been hard pressed to find bottom!Derek. Now he's around alot

Kurt/Blaine?

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-02-12 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I see an equal amount of top!Kurt and top!Blaine, just because the latter seems more like a "traditional" relationship and the latter because it's not a "traditional" relationship.

Also, I'm not sure if it's just my Tumblr dash, but I see pretty much exclusively bottom!Marceline fic.

Back when I was reading Dean/Cas fic Dean was the primary top, but I don't know what it's like now.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if you find it problematic, but the fact that who's labelled "adorable" (ie pretty, cute), and who's "a BAMF" (ie strong) gets turned into who does what to who, highlights the heteronormative sexist nature of most fangirl slash.

In my fic, I like to read the character I relate to the most to bottom because I like being on the bottom myself. The only time I don't mind my preferred bottom on top, is when the fic author sets it up well. I prefer no "wooby" messes, but, who am I kidding? It happens all the time in most fic :<

But, I totally love me some Bottom!Dean, in both my Wincest/Destiel fics, but I think all of them are bad asses.

The only exception...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I see about equal amounts of top!Cas and top!Dean.

Personally, I think their dynamic leans more toward Dean topping - even though put Dean in ANY OTHER PAIRING, and I see him as more of a bottom. :P It's just that Cas comes across as so submissive to Dean so much of the time, to me, while Dean seems like he could take Cas or leave him most of the time :/ - at least that's how he seems to make CAS feel :/

Answer

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
It was top!Castiel during seasons 4 and 5, but the later seasons have tilted the fandom in favor of top!Dean. It would have been really obvious if you'd looked for the answer a couple of years back.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don't ship it, but they're both adorable and both BAMFs, so I see your problem.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I assume Dean would probably be the bottom...? I just know bottom!Dean is way prevalent in Wincest (which is the only SPN ship I read)

I think everybody switches. I guess because that's my personal preference and i think it would be boring to always do it the same (as regards the top/bottom thing).

Most slash fanfic is pretty damn predictable, this is not a new fact.

I have to say though, I used to write for a fandom where the character I preferred to top was usually written as the bottom. I still don't get why he was always pegged as the bottom, since both men are pretty typically manly.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 04:24 am (UTC)(link)

Once again, I'm not very into the whole top/bottom thing and wish there was more slash featuring non-penetrative sex.

Aren't Steve/Tony and Clint/Coulson the most representative ships of the Avengers fandom? They have a zillion more fics than Thor/Loki.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say it's more even for WTNV? If anything, Cecil tops slightly more. Sometimes with tentacles, because... Night Vale.

Metal Gear is fantastic because big badass buff (if kinda pathetic and dorky) Big Boss is taking it 80% of the time. Thank god for Metal Gear. I love you, Metal Gear.

I feel like they'd switch a lot......but honestly I have a big weakness for Dean bottoming
