(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)But anyway, it seems like you're more character-oriented than plot-oriented, which is cool. You don't have to like things just because lots of other people do.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:11 am (UTC)(link)Hahaha!
I'll admit that the first time I saw it, I was like, "...but what about Donna?" But then I got so wrapped up in it that I no longer cared.

Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:31 am (UTC)(link)Its just that for me one of the things I love most about Doctor Who is the way the Doctor and current companion play off each other and interact. It just seems like I can't enjoy episodes where that interplay is missing.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:38 am (UTC)(link)I had kind of a crappy day, yesterday. I would have loved to have Donna riding along in my car giving me a running commentary!

It's definitely in my top five.
Can somebody explain the appeal of "Midnight" to me?
"Blink," on the other hand. I'm female, queer, colored, and need medication every few hours to stay alive. Either way, I meet an Angel, I'd be dead soon. -shudder-
Re: Can somebody explain the appeal of "Midnight" to me?
"Midnight" though... I just LOVE seeing humanity's darkside. I love the idea that we never see the creature or find out what it is. And if the creature is just repeating or copying humans then everything the monster does can be seen as a reflection of humanity. I think the episode also shows why the Doctor needs his companions. Without Donna there to act as a buffer, he seemed a lot more suspicious to the other and he didn't have anyone there to stick up for him. And then the Hostess's sacrifice is beautiful.
Re: Can somebody explain the appeal of "Midnight" to me?
(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 06:30 am (UTC)(link)But I agree the fact that they don't kill you or do anything bad to you is not as scary. Tragic, but not scary. I think most DW fans kid themselves when they think this is somehow more effective than actual danger, because they didn't like how much Moffat raised the stakes in the Series 5 Angels, and believe everything about Blink was better.
Re: Can somebody explain the appeal of "Midnight" to me?
The "twist," if you can call it a twist, isn't what makes it scary. Adds to the scariness, because it's a real life fear (after all, Weeping Angels don't exist IRL), but it's not the only thing that makes it scary. Also, it's just really, really, really well written and directed and acted, very immediate and palpable due to its play-like presentation, even if you don't find it scary.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 02:43 am (UTC)(link)Midnight, on the other hand, interested me because it's never explained what it is or where it came from, if it was a single creature or if there were more of them on the planet, or if it's gone. You never saw it and that's a bit more creepy to me because if you can't see it and you don't know anything about it, you have no way of defending yourself or making peace with it. To me, it's about how the fear of the unknown is the most constant fear we have throughout time and why knowledge is so important.
(Ok, I also like it because Colin Morgan is fantastic. If I didn't know it was him, I wouldn't recognize him for a long time. Every role I've seen him in, he transforms. Watch Parked and then a Merlin episode and it's like, "How the fuck are these two characters played by the same guy?!" their walks are different, their intonation/speech pattern - even ignoring the accents - change, the way he stands as Merlin is different than the way he stands as Cathal. /ok, Colin Morgan praise stopping for now. Sorry!)
