Aw man, OP. 'Midnight' is my absolute favorite episode. I could give or take the others, but 'Midnight'... It hits me right in the gut every time I watch it.

But anyway, it seems like you're more character-oriented than plot-oriented, which is cool. You don't have to like things just because lots of other people do.

I mostly just spend that episode thinking it would be so much better if Donna were there.

ayrt

Hahaha!

I'll admit that the first time I saw it, I was like, "...but what about Donna?" But then I got so wrapped up in it that I no longer cared.

I think that had to do more with their contracts and the timing for filming. Catherine was filming Turn Left, which David wasn't really in, and David was filming Midnight, which Catherine wasn't really in.

Yeah, but that's like half the point of the episode! The Doctor without his companion to be the buffer for him and how that gets him into trouble.

Re: OP

I know. I know its a good episode. That's why its a secret.

Its just that for me one of the things I love most about Doctor Who is the way the Doctor and current companion play off each other and interact. It just seems like I can't enjoy episodes where that interplay is missing.

Almost everything would be better if Donna were there.

Pretty much, yes.

I had kind of a crappy day, yesterday. I would have loved to have Donna riding along in my car giving me a running commentary!

Re: OP

It would have been two minutes long if Donna was there. She'd have just shouted the rest of the van into submission.

Midnight is my favorite too! I have watched it more times than any kind.

Woot woot, favorite episode buddies!

Came here to say this. Midnight is perfect.

Midnight is brilliant.

It's definitely in my top five.

Can somebody explain the appeal of "Midnight" to me?

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-02-12 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Because what I saw in that episode was that people were the most dangerous creatures of all, especially because of how easily mob mentality could take over. But that wasn't news to me. Possibly, I'm too cynical about human nature. I just didn't find the episode that frightening.

"Blink," on the other hand. I'm female, queer, colored, and need medication every few hours to stay alive. Either way, I meet an Angel, I'd be dead soon. -shudder-

Imo, "Blink" relies on "GOTCHA!" scares which get old after the first couple of views. I mean, it's supposed to be awful that these people get sent back in time, but as far as what we actually see in the episode... they all have pretty decent lives even though one of the people sent back is a woman and another person sent back is a black man. So the show doesn't seem to be interested in exploring those inequalities at all.

"Midnight" though... I just LOVE seeing humanity's darkside. I love the idea that we never see the creature or find out what it is. And if the creature is just repeating or copying humans then everything the monster does can be seen as a reflection of humanity. I think the episode also shows why the Doctor needs his companions. Without Donna there to act as a buffer, he seemed a lot more suspicious to the other and he didn't have anyone there to stick up for him. And then the Hostess's sacrifice is beautiful.

I think Blink does a better job of building tension, and the jump scares are effective for that reason. Jump scares don't instantly equal bad horror, they're usually just cheap horror, but the episode really invests in the fear.

But I agree the fact that they don't kill you or do anything bad to you is not as scary. Tragic, but not scary. I think most DW fans kid themselves when they think this is somehow more effective than actual danger, because they didn't like how much Moffat raised the stakes in the Series 5 Angels, and believe everything about Blink was better.

Re: Can somebody explain the appeal of "Midnight" to me?

It's the writing and claustrophobia and the slow build of tension and slow unraveling of composure into hysteria and paranoia and the writing and the fact that there's no freaky special effects and it takes place on one single tiny set and the writing and the fact that we never see the creature and the creature is never explained and the writing.

The "twist," if you can call it a twist, isn't what makes it scary. Adds to the scariness, because it's a real life fear (after all, Weeping Angels don't exist IRL), but it's not the only thing that makes it scary. Also, it's just really, really, really well written and directed and acted, very immediate and palpable due to its play-like presentation, even if you don't find it scary.

lol this is a much better answer than the one i gave, and i agree completely!

I'm cynical about human nature and I found the episode very frightening, because it reminded me of how dark it can be, and how something like that could happen to me.

Re: Can somebody explain the appeal of "Midnight" to me?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Blink bores the hell out of me. I just feel like it would be too easy to put an end to the angels. (Get a large group, have half the group watch the angels, have the other half move the angels so that they're staring at each other. Done. Or what about blowing them up? Would that work? I'm not sure, but I would definitely move them so they were facing each other.)

Midnight, on the other hand, interested me because it's never explained what it is or where it came from, if it was a single creature or if there were more of them on the planet, or if it's gone. You never saw it and that's a bit more creepy to me because if you can't see it and you don't know anything about it, you have no way of defending yourself or making peace with it. To me, it's about how the fear of the unknown is the most constant fear we have throughout time and why knowledge is so important.

(Ok, I also like it because Colin Morgan is fantastic. If I didn't know it was him, I wouldn't recognize him for a long time. Every role I've seen him in, he transforms. Watch Parked and then a Merlin episode and it's like, "How the fuck are these two characters played by the same guy?!" their walks are different, their intonation/speech pattern - even ignoring the accents - change, the way he stands as Merlin is different than the way he stands as Cathal. /ok, Colin Morgan praise stopping for now. Sorry!)

There is a fantastic fic where Donna, Martha, Mickey and Sean team up, and Donna has a wonderfully practical solution to the problem of the Angels.

Ditto to everything you said about the episode - but an extra 'Hell Yeah' for Colin Morgan. I actually hadn't watched Merlin until just after it ended, so I didn't know him from anything else when I first saw Midnight. First time I watched I was entranced by his character most of all. It's this thing he does when he's crying, especially, that's just so raw and real... Once I found out that HE was the guy in Merlin ... I was like 'Okay, gonna cave on watching that now!'

This was my reaction to Midnight too. My friend was all "OMG it's so awesome you're gonna love it!" But I was frustrated that the only message seemed to be "people can suck" and nothing in the episode was explained at all. I had to look up meta and reviews for it to make sure I hadn't missed something.

I was about to go off on you about "The End of Time" not having Doctor-companion interaction because Wilf! but then I saw the bit about it being a regular companion. Whatever. I love the Doctor and Wilf. I wanted them to have all kinds of awesome adventures. I still hope they get to meet again.
