Let me guess, you prefer Cumberben Humperdinck?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't even sound like his name any more

To be fair, his nose is not hawk-like.

because you can only like one or the other, amirite

nayrt, but I don't think anyone of the major players of Holmes have particularly gotten his look right. I think Brett is the closest, but it's still off. That's just the reality of actors playing a role.

Personally, even more than Holmes, I don't think I've ever seen a Watson that struck me as "correct".

Also, in what world does RDJ look like the description, either? smh

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
God, I hope not. D:

Sure, Brett was never going to win any beauty pageants. But he looks like an Adonis compared to Cumberbatch's lumpy chin-less face.

Well Holmes isn't meant to be handsome into first place. Brett may not have a thin nose but I think he played the part well and certainly looks more Holmes-y than any other actor who has depicted him so far.

Well, except for Basil Rathbone.

(personally I prefer the Granada version and not just because of Brettthe Granada Watson(s) were so much better than Nigel Bruce.)

Have any of the Holmes actors had the right nose/face for Holmes though? Genuine question because I can't think of any offhand.

[identity profile] brandiweed.livejournal.com 2014-02-13 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Basil Rathbone looked as much like the classic Sidney Paget depiction of Holmes as any actor ever did.

Too bad his films didn't try to come closer to the books. (The Nigel Bruce issue can be left for another thread.)

He has the ~wrong face and that's why you dislike his Holmes...

Lmao that is so ridiculously absurd.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
was holmes described as handsome, tho...?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
What his nose lacks in thin hawklike-ness, he makes up for in brilliant acting. He IS Holmes, period.

Granted, that picture of Brett is less than appealing.

Does Rathbone satisfy your need for aquiline?

He looked more right for the part than a lot of other Sherlocks. Oddly enough, my second choice for "looks the part" would be the actor from Young Sherlock Holmes.

Are you saying there's EVER been an actor who looks exactly like Holmes? I sure can't think of one, and sure don't care. For that matter, he's a book character. How would you know exactly what he looks like?

IA that he was too old, but given how generally awesome he was, it's a pretty minor quibble.

This is giving me an image of hardcore fans standing around a stasis tank in a laboratory trying to make the perfect Sherlock Holmes.

Mm. He actually looks pretty close to how I pictured Sherlock Holmes when I read the stories (closer than Robert Downey Jr or Benedict Cumberbatch for sure), but I guess everyone has their own mental image.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 02:59 am (UTC)(link)

It wasn't just Brett's face, it was his energy, his physicality, the way he moved, his mannerisms. That's a big part of what made him such a great Holmes.

What a mean-spirited thing to say

[personal profile] tweedisgood 2014-02-13 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Your picture is of Jeremy near the end of his life having suffered two concurrent serious illnesses, and some frankly horrific side effects of medication for years, whilst carrying a series with hard work, personal dedication and talent. It's going take it out of your body, your face and every other damn thing. I'd like to see if you, OP, or his so-called rivals, would still be standing, let alone acting.

Not handsome? Huh, well they do say there's no accounting for taste. As a younger man he was beautiful, in maturity he was Holmes to the life. He hasn't been equalled as canon Holmes in the hearts of many. Yes, he got old. Happens to us all.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I really do wish there was just one Holmes actor among the 100 adaptation who actually is Holmes' type, tall, thin hawk-like nose and dark hair.

I think everyone has to make a balance between looking like a character and acting ability.
