Can we turn this into a rec thread for female superheroes?

I love the girls in Runaways.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still so very unhappy at all the dangling plot threads Runaways has left behind, but otherwise, I agree with this comment.

Would Cyberforce count? I just really like Velocity.

More on the cracky side of things, but the ladies in Nextwave are pretty fucking awesome!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I would like to second Nextwave, it is pure distilled awesome with awesome ladies. And also it has a theme song. ("It's like Shakespeare, but with lots more punching")

Fearless Defenders was amazing (it's too bad it got cancelled, but since people don't buy comics with women in them....). The characters were varied, and the plot was aiming for Epic and full of mythology.

I can't superhero, but both Demon Knights (sadly, cancelled after 24ish issues) and Saga (the artist, Fiona Staples, is amazing) have varied / intriguing female characters.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I really want to read Saga but I have lingering trust issues with Brian K Vaughan so I'm waiting until it's done. Then I can have someone tell me if he pulls a Y: The Last Man ending or not.

Demon Knights was great! I really like Cornell's work when he gets a bit of leeway with characters.

Runaways doesn't get enough love. I really hope it makes a comeback sometime soon.

Rumor has it it maybe turned into a series under Disney/Marvel's recent deal with Netflix to produce a number of series for their properties. First up under that new deal is a rebooted DareDevil.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
DA, but-

Yeah, but after the movie thing, I'll believe that when the first episode comes out.

I loved the short-lived Red She-Hulk series. I get the feeling she's not too popular among older Hulk fans, but Betty quickly became my favorite superhero (not just favorite female superhero). I just wish she got more love. I also loved Sif's Journey into Mystery run, which was also, unfortunately, short-lived.

As for current titles, the new Ms. Marvel is also looking promising and I've enjoyed the new Black Widow series.

I'm not really a comics reader but Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl are my favorites (ever since Justice League)! Two awesome, kickass, won't take shit from anyone, gorgeous ladies who can fly and flatten you in two seconds flat.

Yup. My lovely ladies! *cheers* ♥

Justice League was great. It's worth watching for the character interactions alone. But then you throw in the background women in male dominated sectors (military, police, EMS), and how the writers touched on racism, sexism, the importance of voting and participating in a democracy, and good becomes great. I wish we had more shows like that.
royalbk: (R&K - Kiss Kiss)

It's a definite favorite of mine (JLU as well).

The character interactions were just the best thing - the rivalry between Hawkgirl and Vixen comes to mind right now. It was, is and will probably always be a rare thing to see two women fight over a man so peacefully and even friendly...to this day it's one of the best love triangles for me because everyone in it was so very likable.

Superman's internal/external fight with himself to do right and not unleash his full potential and hurt anyone (even a villain) was so well written.

Wally's policy concerning the villains in his city was 'try to reason with them and maybe even befriend them if possible'- just whoa~!

Diana's slow realization that maybe not all of mankind was evil and useless was such a beautiful thing to see.

Hawkgirl wasn't a hero nor was she a traitor...she was a person with thoughts and feelings, loyalties and doubts.

J'onn was a lonely survivor of a decimated race who needed to learn how to adapt to a planet full of strange creatures.

...

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand I'm gonna stop now before I start going into tl;dr about everyone in this show. (darn wonderful show where everyone has motivations and backgrounds and in which not every villain is really a one dimensional villain. *grumble*)

P.S: That episode in which the male population fell ill due to Aresia's virus was just such a beautiful nod to what women could do. I loved that they were shown as thriving and on top of the situation throughout anything. <3

I would definitely rec Young Avengers. The earlier runs were very good about reasonable costumes for the female characters, and the female characters had some great stories of their own. The latest run, especially - by the end of it, literally the entire team is at least a little bit not-straight. Even Kate Bishop/Hawkeye - rather than being a 'female counterpart of a male hero', she inherited the name of a full-on and at-the-time-dead superhero for her own use/right at the time because she was just that good. When said dead superhero came back to life, he actually was the one to switch over to another codename for a bit because she was using it, and even in the current Hawkeye series, they are either both referred to as Hawkeye or he's referred to as 'Hawkguy'.

And going on the latest Hawkeye series (v.4) - while they don't ignore the potential for sexual tension, ultimately Clint and Kate have a very brother-sister relationship, and Kate isn't really Clint's sidekick so much as back-up and partner. Right now, the series is really good about focusing on Kate almost entirely on her own. She's never sexualized and dresses very well, and her story never slips into stereotypical or condescending (though the comic as a whole has a rather esoteric/indie bent to it).

As for the new Ms. Marvel (the one with Kamala) - it just started, but it's already doing really well and I have some high hopes for it, so I'd definitely rec it.

I've been curious about the new Ms. Marvel. Glad to hear it's going well so far.

I definitely have to start Young Avengers at some point. You're not the first one who has made a good case for it.

I LOVED Runaways. And the females were imo the strongest (both character-wise and literally) on that team. (If you liked Runaways, I would suggest not reading Avengers Arena.)

The Journey Into Mystery issues featuring the Lady Sif were excellent, and this is coming from someone who had never gotten into any of the Thor-related titles.

I can totes get behind this.

The old Birds of Prey was pretty great, because it had Oracle in it, and Oracle is basically the best.

Anything having to do with Batwoman and/or the Renee Montoya Question is great--background reading can be found in the series 52, but Batwoman had a slightly rearranged origin in Greg Rucka's run, which I highly recommend. I believe the TPB is titled "Batwoman: Elegy."

The old Power Girl series by Palmiotti, Gray, and Connor was fun. A lot of people don't like Power Girl because of the boob window issue, but PG herself is a great character and I hate that people miss out on her for such a trivial thing.

Madame Xanadu isn't exactly a superhero--she's one of DC's mystics--but she's still one of my favorites. She recently(ish) had a Vertigo series to herself.

I mentioned Greg Rucka earlier, and I'll go on further to recommend pretty much any female-centered story he's written. He's good at characters and keeping a story well-paced and engaging.

And if you're a fan of magical girl series, there's a good Italian comic series called W.I.T.C.H. I'd actually recommend the TV series adaptation over the comic, because it was more fine-tuned and focused, but the comic's still pretty good (until you get to the part where they're teaching magical children in a magic bus, which is just puzzling, but the rest is okay).

All the women in Love and Rockets' God and Science: Return of the Ti-Girls. L&R is by and large not superheroes, but this short run by one of the creators is a huge love letter to them. Most of the characters are female (I can only think of three males off the top of my head), and while they all lean towards a kind of classic superhero look, they all dress in a way that makes sense for their character.

Image

I also dug the women in the first couple TPBs of Top 10, with Alan Moore writing and Gene Ha/Zander Cannon on art (the run directly after had decent writing, but the change in artists imo, while cleaner, made everyone look a lot more generic and a little too pretty for the "police procedural meets superhero" setting).

I know it looks like total cheesecake (okay, it is total cheesecake), but Empowered. I love her so much, and I love that series so much. Emp's a wonderful character, and it's just great to see her self-confidence grow as the series goes on. She still has her issues, but things are on a steady, if traumatizing, upswing for her. And how much depth Sistah Spooky has gotten in the past couple volumes is kind of amazing, considering she starts out as a tooth-gratingly 2-dimensional alpha bitch.

The Movement is a fun team book led by multiple female characters. One of the members (the only pre-existing one) is Rainmaker, formerly of Gen 13, who is dating the team leader, Virtue (well, more accurately, they're discovering just how hard it is for superheroes to make time in their schedule to date, but they're trying!).

Unfortunately, it's being cancelled as of issue 12. On the bright side, that'll make it easier to get a complete collection...
