That's how it works with those people. First you complain that there isn't enough X. Then, once some good examples of X come along, you praise them like they're the second coming of sliced bread while conveniently forgetting every other example of X that existed before this shiny new one.

In the discussions I've seen, I think it's more about people wanting a female character who could get their own film and be their own franchise, and Captain Marvel is one of the characters you could see that happening for.

There are tons of great females in comics, I agree, but they often get pushed to the side for the male characters in other media. Female superheros are still sidekicks and secondary to their male counterparts.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why we need a Squirrel Girl movie.

Who wouldn't be interested in a film franchise about a superhero who fights crime and injustice by siccing squirrels on people?

That's... I don't know, is it wrong that I can't really bring myself to care about this?

There's plenty of great female superheroes. They're right there in the comics.

Personally, I like Kate Bishop because she's not so hypersexualized in the 2012 Hawkeye series. It's refreshing.

If anyone wants some really good female characters, give Elfquest a shot.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Are they still making ElfQuest? I used to read it, way back in the day, and drifted off when they did their weird variety comic with Jink, etc. Also, I always liked Strongbow & Moonshade best, and they weren't the marquee characters. :)

Yeah. And I don't see anything wrong with being excited about Captain Marvel's new costume. There are, in fact, some girls who just won't read a book where the main ladies wear bathing suit-esque clothing. I know girls who just can't get into Black Canary and or PG because of that. And I mean, on one hand, yes, their loss, and I really like the fishnets and the boob window because I think it works for those two characters, but on the other hand, I totally understand seeing those costumes and just rolling your eyes and going, "Whatever, this is just too ridiculous." (The first time I encountered Peej was for a class assignment where we had to draw some pages of a BoP script. I hated having to draw her, because I knew nothing of her character, just that she was wearing a blatantly fanservice-y costume and I didn't want to play that game.)

But Kate's pretty well-clothed and in the new Hawkeye comic, is drawn like an average, athletic girl. Captain Marvel is wearing a military-esque outfit to go with her new codename, instead of a bathing suit and a "Ms" (which always sounds to me a bit like calling Sue Storm "Invisible Girl." Fine for an actual girl, a bit silly/demeaning for a grown woman, especially an Air Force Major).

There are a lot of awesome ladies in comics. But a lot of them also have had to do a lot of fanservice in their time (She-Hulk and Jean Grey, for one). I think people are turning onto ladies in comics now because they way they're presented in the new titles is a little more welcoming.

...I genuinely love Young Avengers, and I am also more than a little impressed they gave Captain Marvel a stereotypically male uniform. So yes, I am busy raving about those things, because they are things that matter to me.

Admittedly, it helps that YA, Hawkeye V4 and the latest Captain Marvel series are relatively standalone series that I don't need to have memorised a ton of other series to keep up with, and that I can rave about those series without worrying about whether or not people will try to call me out on not being a "real" fan because I don't keep up with all the Avengers books. *shrug*

The only problem I have with Kate Bishop is that I will always be confused when they say "Hawkeye" and mean her instead of him. But in the end, using this title to make a series about them both is kind of clever, so I don't really mind in the end.

Marvel always had great female characters, that weren't always peripheral to their storylines, I'm not denying that, but I do think they have been writing and treating their female characters better as of late, and they should be getting credit for that.
And sadly, I think it's going in the opposite direction currently at DC. (Yes, I can't rest until I've made my dig at DC. I should put up a picture of Didio on my wall so I can throw darts at it)

How about:

Katchoo and Francine, and every other female character in Strangers in Paradise.

Pretty much any female character in ElfQuest, at least the original run, I haven't read the second or third quests yet.

Death, in The Sandman. What cannot be said about Death?

I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting at the moment.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Monica Rambeau used to lead the Avengers? I had no idea.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely agree. It makes me kind of sad when people go on about how terrible comic females are because even though their intentions are good, they're basically devaluing a bunch of female characters I really love and respect. It's usually because of something stupid too, like a shitty writing or art decision years ago that doesn't affect subsequent portrayals of the character.

I'm not suggesting that sexism in comics isn't a problem, but you have to acknowledge the good as well as the bad, and there's waaaaaaay more good than a lot of people seem to think.

As a side note, the thing I hate most is when people go on about how terrible it is how so many female characters are only female version of a male character, like Batgirl or She-Hulk, regardless of how different they are in substance from their male counterpart or what they've done entirely on their own merits. Their connection to a male character is usually only significant as part of their origin story, and sometimes not even then. Like, Steph becoming Batgirl had absolutely nothing to do with Bruce, she did it because Cass asked her to (which was a weird situation to begin with but let's not go in to that).

It would definitely be cool if there were more original female superheroes with no connection to existing male ones (although there are already shitloads, eg. almost every female X-Man), but as a general rule new superheroes don't sell very well.

I love a lot of lady superheroes I just wish they weren't all so hyper-sexualized(not that I think they're a lesser character if they are) and more of them had their own solo-titles, Scarlet Witch is one of my top characters but I have to hunt to find anything with her in. But that's also due to the fact that my local comic book store is not terribly well stocked.

Op what do you think of what Bendis has done to Spider-woman?

[personal profile] ozaline 2014-02-16 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
Spider-woman, the Jessica Drew Spider-Woman is one of my two favorite Marvel heroes (the other being Kitty Pryde, Captain Marvel comes in a close third), and I was so happy when Bendis brought her back but I feel he's screwed up her origin way too much... making her father complicit in Hydra's schemes and taking out the High Evolutionary's role and while she was a bit mopey at first cause she didn't know how to relate to other humans by the time she became a PI she got over most of that.

I just wish I could have happy PI Jessica Drew back, or the Jessica Drew who challenged the supernatural while looking for her father.
