Fuck, why is "manpain" a thing? Pain is pain and it's valid no matter what your sex or gender.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
That's a pet peeve of mine as well.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Because society teaches men that they must be strong and stoic. So some people get off on seeing men cry and show emotion.

The problem with mainpain is that it takes an individual person's totally valid pain, and lather-rinse-repeats it unvaryingly and narrowly for the same type of people and at the expense of the same types of people in every single damn TV show until it feels like more of a narrative device than a genuine character development whenever it happens. Which IS a shame, because on an individual level, a person's pain is just pain.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, I was thinking up a response along the lines of "I think it applies to a specific thing in literature/movies/etc. where the guy is angsting about how rough his life is because women won't have sex with him and he's out of whiskey."

But then I looked at the secret and yeah I agree.

Okay

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I gotta weigh in on this even though I know I'm inviting wank,

I think "manpain" is a valid term in a fandom context cause it's usually used when a woman has died or been raped, but the author/creator wants us to focus on how much her SO is hurting. You occasionally see that from the press or law enforcement IRL too, but I wouldn't say it's common, thank god.

But yeah, there is a difference between schadenfreud for a real skater who probably genuinely feels bad for his partner, and irritation about a fictional woman fridged to advance the plot.

Huh, I always thought "manpain" was another word for "asspained" until reading the replies to this.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I hate that word so fucking much.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's prolly more like 'fuck u, bitch; u cost us a medal.'

I think 'manpain' is a fucking stupid word (like mansplain, manswers, etc.) to apply to this context, but I can't fault you for your kinks.

Now all I can think of is that TV show Manswers.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Can we add "mancation" to this list?

Like, why the fuck does anything that a man does have to have the word "man" attached to it? Do they mandrive, and mantype, and manfacebook, and manshit?

Mansplain is used when men feel their experience overrides womens.

Like a woman says she constantly has to deal with sexist jerks at work.

And the man say "well I've never seen anyone be sexist at work, so you must be misinterpreting their actions."

no shit dumbass, you're not a woman so they're not going to be sexist to you.

It's not mansplaining because they're a man explaining something, it's because they're being condescending and assuming they know better than a woman.

It's right up there with "male tears" and the whole "but what about the menz".

I just like watching them fall so I can imagine a laugh track in my head while Bob Sagat makes a dumb joke.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Preferably in a bad falsetto.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
All I see is that guy in the tan coat and my first thought was, "Cas, do you like ice skating?"

I'm sorry.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
See, and you folks don't think private kinks carry over to real life pain. Ha.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
So you get off on watching videos of REAL people getting hurt and the pain and worry their partners go through. I can see why you would want to keep this a secret. I know this is an any kink goes sort of community but you have to draw the line someplace.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-21 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Not the OP, but this is figure skating, on display, and it involves tripping over whilst trying to be the ~bestest and sometimes failing. It's not really the same kind of hurt as, say, kinking on videos of American soldiers torturing foreign civilians.

There are people who watch NASCAR just for the crashes, and people who watch hockey just for the fights. It's something about human nature.

Anyway, figure skaters (and other athletes) know and understand the risks that they take. They determine that these risks are worth the joy that they otherwise find in the sport. That makes this situation different from, say, an accident or an instance wherein someone is inflicting harm upon another.

You must not be a fan of America's Funniest Home Videos then?

I only say that because my mother always hates to watch it because she doesn't find people getting hurt in dumb ways as funny as I do.

It's pretty bad that you're watching real people get hurt to fulfill your kink. Why not just watch Chris Nolan movies? He seriously can't make a movie without a ton of mainpain at the result of a dead wife or girlfriend. Manpain is all that he does. It's the main theme throughout all his movies.

Memento - dead wife
Batman Begins - love interest alive, but loads of manpain due to dead parents
The Prestige - dead wife
The Dark Knight - love interest loves another, and then dies
Inception - dead wife
The Dark Knight Rises - love interest still dead from the last movie

I've been watching the Olympics and when I see a fall or a mistake, I just tend to notice how they comfort each other after they have finished their program
