[Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies]

Personally I'd write it anyway because I think people worry too much about coming up with an original premise and not enough about the execution which is usually very different between various stories that may sound similar at first.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
I second this.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Write it, OP! It's always awesome when the Ace Attorney fandom has more fic in it!!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
Seconded. The AA fandom definitely needs more fic!

Write it. If you're really worried do it under a sock.

But most of all? Have fun. Write 'cause you want to. Heck, if it's my thing I'll read it.

Mmm, but I have a question. How did you get a used copy of DD? It's only sold from the Nintendo eShop.

op

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
It was for download only outside Japan. I study Japanese, and it's a tradition of mine to play the Ace Attorney games in Japanese. This time it took me a lot of time to get my hands on a copy I could afford (too much money spent on the 3DS), and thus I got it well past the Western release date.

Oooooohhh. Okay. That's cool. Thank you for explaining it to me. As for me, I still haven't finished mine...

But yeah, OP, write it!

Re: op

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
OP: please write it!

Don't worry about being late to the Dual Destinies party. I only just started playing the game this week (I was waiting for DD to be discounted in the UK Nintendo eshop, which it just was a few days ago) so you're not the only one. I spent the last few months trying to avoid DD spoilers like anything and didn't entirely succeed. I'm only about to dive into the fic/art now.

The more AA fic the better. Your fic will be entirely fresh to those like me. It might even be the first DD fic I read.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I say go for it. I'd probably like it more than TttP anyway.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
write it, and in the author's notes explain exactly what you told us here-- and mention that you read and enjoyed the other fic but just had to write your spin on the idea

[SPOILERS FOR DUAL DESTINIES]

[personal profile] pengychan 2014-02-25 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Wait. Waitwaitwait. Is that my fic? Really?

OP, you should totally write your fic! It's not like I bought myself exclusive rights to a premise plenty of people probably thought about before me to begin with. :P
Actually, I'm 90% sure I wrote it as a response to a prompt on the PW kink meme. Or I had started writing a very vague outline of it, but only actually finished the first chapter and kept going after reading the prompt. So yeah, it's not like the idea of writing what may have happened to the Phantom post-game was MINE to begin with.

(And even if I had the idea unprompted, who the hell cares. Plenty of fics have similar premises and then develop differently and better. I should hope no one would be stupid enough to give you shit over something like that. Just write and have fun, that's what fic is for!)

*foams at mouth*

A-hem. Yes, I quite enjoy the series.
(So what are your thoughts about yaoi Dual Destinies?)

omggggggggggggggggggggggggggg

I loved the absolute shit out of it. It had the tone of the first three games while still retaining everything I liked about AJ, and even though it had more specialized mechanics than any other game in the series, I thought it felt organic and not gimmicky at all. The music was wonderful in general, but Blackquill's theme and the Mood Matrix theme are two of my favorite AA songs ever. Athena and Blackquill themselves are awesome. Also, Phoenix and Edgeworth are clearly fucking.

The only thing missing was Franziska.

[SPOILERS FOR DUAL DESTINIES]

[personal profile] pengychan 2014-02-25 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I loved it, too! I didn't start with the highest hopes (I really didn't like AJ because... several reasons), but I was pleasantly surprised. I really liked it, liked the new characters (ATHENA!) and loved the way recurring characters were handled (Apollo got a backstory! And goals! And a subplot of his own!).
And yeah, I don't even ship P/E, but the shipping potential is blatant. XD Edgeworth went to Trucy's magic show and that's so cute I just can't.

Franziska should have been there just so that she could meet Aura. XD
I missed Maya a bit, too, but I can see why they couldn't just cram her in. I really liked her letter, though, and Pearl's mention that she's coming to visit soon after the DLC case. It was a nice touch.

As for the music, for me it's a tie between Blackquill's theme and the Phantom's.
I also really liked the twist at the end. I was caught completely by surprise. I didn't even LIKE Fulbright while playing, but after finding out the truth I felt so, so bad for him. Playing the extra case while knowing it was kind of weird. It was all "aww, look at that cutie-- oh wait, he's dead and that's actually the Phantom-- BUT LOOK AT THAT CUTIE!"

My friend just bought me the first game as a present and I'm excited to get into this series. I've been curious for a while because I have a friend who really likes it. But unfortunately I can't really say anything about it yet since I know nothing.
pengychan: (Hongou/Nijisaki)

[personal profile] pengychan 2014-02-25 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, sounds a lot like the way I got into the series - a friend bought me the first game and a Nintendo DS so that I could play it. She claims it was a plot from her part to get me into writing AA fanfic, and it certainly worked. XD

Anyway, I fell in love with the first game and I was off to get the whole series right after I finished it. Hope it will be the same for you, it's really a great series.

AAAH I am so excited for you! I hope you like it; it's extremely silly and takes a couple cases to hit its stride, but once that happens it just gets better and better.

My strongest memory of playing the first game for the first time is being surprised by how many characters there were. The only ones I knew of were Phoenix and Edgeworth, and I'd heard the name Gumshoe once or twice, but that was it. Spoiler alert: there are others.

I am excited for Shu Takumi's AA project, although I'm hoping it's the same as the DD team's AA project too, and that it's GS6.

I have mixed feelings about DD. I felt it was very formulaic, despite aiming for twist after twist, as well as overly holding the player's hand to the point it may as well have been a visual novel rather than call itself a game. On top of other things like forced cameos, AJ retcons, and the lame exposition via telling, rather than showing (Clay, Athena's backstory, Apollo's pov in the last case, Pearl not actually interacting with the people Phoenix claims she does, etc.). /ljpost

Yet the game was still really enjoyable. It was even the funniest in the series for me. The third case for instance is my "worst case ever," but also the one to keep making me laugh at loud whenever the weird motivations and poorly written/acted cheese took a backseat to the slapstick. The fail options for Athena's statue performance? Holy shit my sides. Means creepy clay hair and his chalkboard? Robin's manly screaming and pot throwing? The defense is not ready to rock? Fulbright and Athena's exchange from afar? I need to breathe gdi—

And I'm not going to pretend that the twist of the last case wasn't very good for me either. I was so torn because I really liked Fulbright, and I so wanted him to be a real addition to the cast. Yeah, Athena and Simon are okay, but Fulbright was the one main supporting character that endeared me to the game. Of the detectives, you have Gumshoe who submits to every prosecutor, Ema who openly snarks the prosecutor she's paired with, and Fulbright who isn't phased by anything. Good twist though ♥

I can't agree that it was formulaic - at least, not to the point it bothered me, and although I did think there was more hand-holding than necessary, I didn't mind not having to go through every single location with a fine-toothed comb and present every single piece of evidence to every single person whenever I wasn't sure what to do next. But man, I am right there with you on the third case - it was SO FUNNY. Everything you mention, spot on.

Case 3 was the funniest thing in history of everything ever. Means' breakdown is easily the funniest in the whole series yet, in my opinion.

I'm so used to my icon and my username that even though I don't forget where they're from, I do forget what a single-minded nut I must look like whenever I go on one of my not-infrequent Ace Attorney evangelism binges. I like other things, too, I swear!

YO you are actually somewhat wrong because you know what the fandom doesn't have?

They don't mostly have fanfiction based on the Quiz DLC because the localized games side of the fandom didn't get that at all \:D/ Do you know how much fodder there is? There is so much. Even if not everyone talks to each other, the nonsense that happens is like it was one of the voice dramas morphed into a Layton knock off.

Don't worry. You can monopolize this!
