*foams at mouth*
A-hem. Yes, I quite enjoy the series.
(So what are your thoughts about
yaoiDual Destinies?)no subject
I loved the absolute shit out of it. It had the tone of the first three games while still retaining everything I liked about AJ, and even though it had more specialized mechanics than any other game in the series, I thought it felt organic and not gimmicky at all. The music was wonderful in general, but Blackquill's theme and the Mood Matrix theme are two of my favorite AA songs ever. Athena and Blackquill themselves are awesome. Also, Phoenix and Edgeworth are clearly fucking.
The only thing missing was Franziska.
[SPOILERS FOR DUAL DESTINIES]
And yeah, I don't even ship P/E, but the shipping potential is blatant. XD Edgeworth went to Trucy's magic show and that's so cute I just can't.
Franziska should have been there just so that she could meet Aura. XD
I missed Maya a bit, too, but I can see why they couldn't just cram her in. I really liked her letter, though, and Pearl's mention that she's coming to visit soon after the DLC case. It was a nice touch.
As for the music, for me it's a tie between Blackquill's theme and the Phantom's.
I also really liked the twist at the end. I was caught completely by surprise. I didn't even LIKE Fulbright while playing, but after finding out the truth I felt so, so bad for him. Playing the extra case while knowing it was kind of weird. It was all "aww, look at that cutie-- oh wait, he's dead and that's actually the Phantom-- BUT LOOK AT THAT CUTIE!"
Re: [SPOILERS FOR DUAL DESTINIES]
The funny thing about that was, I guessed at Fulbright's FIRST APPEARANCE that he was a bad guy.* But then when we found out what the deal was, I got really sad about him too. Because, if the real Fulbright was really like that? :(
It is my headcanon that Franziska and Simon become best friends after Dual Destinies, so I hope she would meet Aura. She would LOVE Aura.
*It was because he had peaked lapels. I once wrote an academic paper on the semiotics of peaked lapels and now I see it everywhere; the upshot is that peaked lapels in visual media tend to indicate villains. This is played extremely straight in Ace Attorney.
Re: [SPOILERS FOR DUAL DESTINIES]
Of course I saw why later. Oh yes I did.
Also, the way you realized "Fulbright" was the big bad is pretty interesting and hilarious at the same time. XD And yeah, I felt bad for him. I'm pretty sure he really WAS the way the Phantom depicted him (he had to be accurate to steal his identity without anyone noticing anything odd), and that makes everything even sadder. He didn't deserve to die.
As for the Phantom, he's just as sad. Really. One of the most pitiful characters in the whole series.
I APPROVE OF THAT HEADCANON.
SPOILERS
The only thing that disappointed me about DD was that during the entire phantom reveal, my brain was screaming "Kristoph...KrisTOPH...KRISTOPH"
And then nothing.
Re: SPOILERS
(I kinda wish Kristoph's locks were explained at some point. It was the only thing about him I really found interesting, and they were just forgotten about.)

Re: SPOILERS
Yeah, I'm fairly sure the writers and/or translators are putting in Phoenix/Edgeworth stuff on purpose now. Maybe it's queerbaiting, but I don't even care. I mean, "(This immense tension between us... It's like we're picking up right where we left off.)"? "Don't lecture ME on matters of the heart, Edgeworth!"? The argument over who has the better eye for aesthetics??? Having them make out onscreen could hardly be less subtle.

Anyway, I fell in love with the first game and I was off to get the whole series right after I finished it. Hope it will be the same for you, it's really a great series.

My strongest memory of playing the first game for the first time is being surprised by how many characters there were. The only ones I knew of were Phoenix and Edgeworth, and I'd heard the name Gumshoe once or twice, but that was it. Spoiler alert: there are others.

and almost all of them were in AJ.no subject
I have mixed feelings about DD. I felt it was very formulaic, despite aiming for twist after twist, as well as overly holding the player's hand to the point it may as well have been a visual novel rather than call itself a game. On top of other things like forced cameos, AJ retcons, and the lame exposition via telling, rather than showing (Clay, Athena's backstory, Apollo's pov in the last case, Pearl not actually interacting with the people Phoenix claims she does, etc.). /ljpost
Yet the game was still really enjoyable. It was even the funniest in the series for me. The third case for instance is my "worst case ever," but also the one to keep making me laugh at loud whenever the weird motivations and poorly written/acted cheese took a backseat to the slapstick. The fail options for Athena's statue performance? Holy shit my sides. Means creepy clay hair and his chalkboard? Robin's manly screaming and pot throwing? The defense is not ready to rock? Fulbright and Athena's exchange from afar? I need to breathe gdi—
And I'm not going to pretend that the twist of the last case wasn't very good for me either. I was so torn because I really liked Fulbright, and I so wanted him to be a real addition to the cast. Yeah, Athena and Simon are okay, but Fulbright was the one main supporting character that endeared me to the game. Of the detectives, you have Gumshoe who submits to every prosecutor, Ema who openly snarks the prosecutor she's paired with, and Fulbright who isn't phased by anything. Good twist though ♥

Aw, but I miss clicking on everything. Not so much to spend unneeded time re-checking spots, but for the extra dialogue between the lawyer and their assistant. For me it's the added touch that gives you a better feel between them and the lawyer's inner dialogue.
I will go through Hugh's odd cry so many times just for the funny.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-26 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)Duh. Of course that's from the Edgeworth game. How did I not see that before? The concept of Edgeworth's magical power of logic was hilarious. *pompous forehead tapping ensues*
