Can someone explain.......

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Why doesn't regular insurance cover vision/dental? I need new glasses but I can't afford them. >:O

(Feel free to use this for stuff you need explained! Just change the subject.

Because American insurance is HELLA STUPID. I'm going to assume you're American, but if you're not, ours is the same.

Can someone explain... UK health costs...

Why does the NHS not cover glasses and dental work fully?

I'm lucky enough to get my dental work free, due to being unemployed, but even with the NHS voucher I get towards my glasses I still have to somehow find nearly £80 for new glasses due to needing photoreactive lens coating and double lens thinning.

If I had a job, I wouldn't be able to afford either of these.

Neither dental or glasses are covered in Norway*, with some exceptions.

Can't we switch nationalities? I have to get all my wisdom teeth out in the near future, and I am pretty sure I will have to sell my soul to afford it.

*Eye illnesses, as in everything except near and far sightedness and anything dental is free up until 18.

Dental care is covered until you're 16 in the UK, or 18 if you remain in full time education. Eyesight tests are also free in that age range, and they get automatic help towards glasses. If you get an eye infection, then that's covered by other parts of the NHS.

I feel your pain with the wisdom teeth. Had to have my bottom right out a few months back, due to it being rotted pretty far down. My bottom left is probably impacted, but the emergency dentist couldn't confirm with an x-ray due to the gum infection in that part of my mouth being so severe I could barely open wide enough for her to get a look. When I went for a regular dentist appointment, she couldn't do anything because I had a cold sore and there was too much risk of spreading it to another part of my face.

We pay 25% from the year you turn 19 until the year you turn 21 or something along those lines for dental. Going to the eye doctor* is covered by the state at all ages, so if have to go to him/her to get your prescription your glasses are covered until you turn 18, but not after.

Yeah, it sucks doesn't it. Oh? that is a lot worse than what happened to me, half my wisdom tooth just broke off during Christmas dinner, but no pain or anything, but when I went to the dentist she filed it off and put on a temporary filling over my now exposed nerve until I can get to the specialist to get it removed, and she said they would probably remove the rest of them at the same time as I would most likely have issues with them all.

*The specialist that your GP sends you to and are equipped to deal with eye sickness and damages not the ones that usually works in the same place you buy glasses.

Eye doctors are the same here, covered by the NHS, but I don't think they can do prescriptions for glasses/contact lenses. I've only been there once though, and it was as a referral from the emergency department rather than my GP. Spent far too long wandering around the hospital that day because no one considered that maybe the extremely photosensitive girl whose glasses are hooked on her jacket because her face is swollen might need help navigating... and avoiding people... chairs... cleaning carts... walls.

Prescription is probably not the correct word? The thingy that says what kind of glasses you need, if they are made by the eye doctor you get your glasses for free until you turn 18. I think you might have to apply somehow, but I didn't pay much attention to that as a child. I went every year from the age of 4 until I a couple of years ago, when I was told I didn't need to anymore if nothing felt wrong. The damn eye drops she put in my eyes every other year was hell, nicest doctor I've ever had tho.

Oh wow, that is awful! But I guess your medical personnel are like ours, overworked and underpaid? So one can almost excuse them, even if that isn't something that should have happened.

If they're American then the dental is because here, traditionally, Dental is considered separate insurance than the rest of it. I'm pretty sure most insurance covers vision though, at least one check up a year and a new pair of glasses or contacts is standard.

/facepalm I just read the change to thread title you did, sorry. I'd assumed you were referring to the OP.

U.S.? Because insurance companies suck and want to cover as little as possible, unfortunately.

If you know someone with a Costco membership, see if you can go through them. You can get a walk-in eye exam and their glasses are very reasonably priced. I'm pretty sure they'll also give you your eye prescription if you want to try shopping online for frames. I've heard good things about Zenni Optical: http://www.www.zennioptical.com/‎

Seconding Costco.

UK Costco would work out more expensive for me, tbh, and they'd not meet my requirements. When I asked last time I needed new glasses, the ladies working there said they don't honour NHS optical vouchers, nor do they do the usually-optional extras that I need; photoreactive lens coating to protect my eyes and double lens thinning just to fit the lenses in a frame.

So I guess that Costco might be good if you just needed bogstandard glasses, but if you need anything "complicated", then you're fucked.

What about Specsavers? That is what I use, because they are cheapest but I am in Norway and the prices may differ?

Specsavers is where I've gone for years. Their deal where you get free photoreactive lenses if you buy glasses costing £65 or more is wonderful for me. And they take the NHS voucher. But, unfortunately, lens thinning is expensive and drives the price back up.

I started when I turned 18 and have never looked back! I am lucky in the sense that I don't have to get the lens thinner anymore, so the price isn't too bad.

I love the 2 for 1 deal, especially when they have it for sun glasses* which means for the first time in my life I can walk in the sun without issues!

*I can't be arsed to look up the correct translation, you get what I mean?

Re: Can someone explain.......

[personal profile] ansela_jonla 2014-02-25 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
I used to have that deal as well, but here in the UK there's not much call for sunglasses, so I wouldn't get them. The lens-thinning is too expensive though now, and I can't afford to pay for the photoreactive coating, so no more 2-for-1 for ansela.

Okay, so I haven't had my glasses updated in around half a decade, which was fine up until a couple months ago. And I have a Costco membership, but also insurance.

What is the pricing like at Costco for a basic pair of prescription glasses? Or contacts? And do they accept insurance?

/will have to spend a fortune on dental, soon, so trying to save on vision

According to my mom, who used to have me go there when she had a membership, she doesn't think they take insurance (but she's not sure) and they're a little more pricey than Wal-Mart but still on the low end of things.

I thought they were really cheap honestly. Now I'm not sure it's really such a great option. Sorry I couldn't be of more help :/

Re: Can someone explain.......

My guess would be because those are things that a lot of people either don't need or need so little of that it's cheaper to just pay out-of-pocket for it.

Personally, I don't have vision insurance or dental insurance because my eyes are 20/20 and I have perfect teeth (no cavities or anything), so it ends up being cheaper for me to pay for checkups/cleaning than it is to pay for the insurance, which I would only use for checkups/cleaning anyway.

Re: Can someone explain.......

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe because they are such regular expenses that people will consistently incurr even when they are healthy and that's not a moneymaker for insurance companies?

The good news is that dentists and optometrists actually know hiw much they charge for their regular services, so you can shop around.

Pardon the unintentional pun, but keep your eyes open for deals in the paper/signs in local shops. I got a deal of two pairs for $100 total with like $20 eye exam a couple years ago.

Walmart also tends to have decent prices if you don't have access to Costco.
