Can we start logging IP Adresses of Anons?

They've been getting more vicious than usual lately. There's been more than a few telling people to kill themselves, and now one just aimed a personal attack at dethtoll. At the very least, keeping track of the anons would take care of some of the unnecessary spam and harassment that might be coming from one very bitter anon.

Yes I realize I'm anon right now, but I'd rather not be dogpiled on my regular account.

I have mixed feelings as I don't think I'd be comfortable with IP addresses being logged. However, that's definitely a problem - maybe we need mods? I'm not saying Case doesn't do an amazing job, he does, but he doesn't have time to moderate everyone.

On the other hand, if things are as bad as you say, maybe we should stop allowing anons to be so freely anon. Death threats should be taken seriously - yeah, they're probably trolls or drunk or whatever, but that's still fucked up stuff.

To clear something up - there were no death threats, no idea where that came from. The one attacking dethtoll has been removed - quickly enough, I think, if you didn't see it at all!

The thread was just deleted, but it was basically an anon claiming that dethtoll is lying about being deaf just to start shit. And even though it was deleted, there is a level of unnecessary hostility coming from anons that didn't use to be here a few months ago so I don't think these anons are just going to stop because one thread of theirs was deleted.

Case has logged IP Adresses before temporarily. Each time we as users never get to see it, but he does. And he's been nothing but responsible with that information. So the only time I think Case would use that information would be to ban someone or keep track of one particular anon who is purposely trying to start these harassing, toxic threads and comments.

I hate the idea but if it stops the anon troll over on p1 from making pointless rude comments and stops people from telling others to kill themselves or "go play in traffic" then I'm for it. This comm is toxic enough at times without that bullshit going on.

I usually post under my name but am going anon here to make a point.

I think "keeping track of the anons" on a permanent basis would cripple the comm - this is fandomsecrets, not fandom-tell-everyone-what-you-think-under-your-real-name. We need a level of anonymity available for people to really engage with each other. I'm not brave enough to talk about certain kinks or whatever un-anon, and I have no idea what other people here are comfortable with talking about with a name (or even pseudonym) attached.

Case does a great job of modding the place (case in point - the quick removal of the personal attack). I think if the troll situation really is that out-of-hand, which honestly I don't think it is, maybe Case could appoint some regulars to be co-mods? That's his decision though, and not mine.

For every troll post, there's at least 3 or 4 honest anon posts. And frankly, some of the more obnoxious commentary IMO has been coming from named users (and no I'm not talking about Noodles or Chard). If Case wants to put on IP logging for a day or two, that's his decision but I do think permanently tracking anons will badly stifle the comm.

FYI, the personal attack was ableist bullshit spilled over from the other day.

I 100% agree. For one thing, the anonymity protects us from internal bullying.

Hypothetically, let's say that someone doesn't like something I've got to say here. Then they obsessively sort through comments, picking out every one I've made, comparing them, picking and choosing for bits that fit the pattern they want to see.

Maybe they think I'm a liar so they point out that I said I liked X over here, and said I wasn't that impressed by it over here. Maybe they think I'm an evil oppressor, so they pick out everything I've ever said that can be read as against SJW orthodoxy, or every thread where I imply that I might have one privilege or another.

Now they've got this picture in their head, they can do two things. One, obviously, is to harass me in this community, waving their "proof" of how evil I am every time they think a comment is me.

The second is to stalk me OUTSIDE this community. I mentioned I've written in X fandom? I mentioned that I live in Y town? I made a reference to my age? I posted in the height and weight thread, or a personal grooming thread, or anything else that gives them a rough physical description of me? Well no prob, just scour through X fandom communities looking for someone who fits those descriptors. Maybe they wind up posting their crazy "expose" shit about me, maybe they wind up posting it about someone else because they're not very good at Internet Detective.

If you think this is an unrealistic scenario, I respect your opinion, but I've seen it play out in a couple of similar patterns, and I've seen it too many times.

I agree with everything, especially that a lot of the obnoxious stuff has been coming from named users. It's getting old.

I mean, I'm a moron, but even I know how to use proxies. If you want to keep your IP secret, there's nothing easier than that. Logging IPs does fuck all to prevent trolling.

MTE about the ease of proxies. But it bugs some anons enough to want it off anyways (I don't mean this as a negative), so I think there is some truth to it curbing some of the trolling.

I'd rather logged-in users were included in the tracking though, simply because I'd rather have an idea of who's being duplicitous and stupid enough not to use a proxy. That's me being a petty couch dictator though.

Actually, if IPs are logged and one user is consistently harassing others and stuff, they could theoretically be reported to DW and possibly get a site-wide IP ban

They could use a proxy but it's a layer of annoyance probably not worth trolling on FS for

Lately every time I decide to check and see what FS is up to some ugly kind of drama is going down so I decide to check back later in the hopes people will have it out of their system... I guess maybe the weather is a little meaner around here recently.

I think it usually goes in spurts, because the trolls get bored with everybody being nice, but other people get fed up with an unfriendly atmosphere.

Like the past month or so, has been worse than usual, but a few months before that it seemed especially friendly.

I don't want IP logging turned on, but it does seem like most of the discussion on several of the secrets lately has focused on whatever bit of lackluster trolling got there first.
