That is most annoying when trying to do something like take tests!

I'm the person who posted the link and I agree it doesn't make it fair game to make a sexist remark. Which is why I didn't make any???? Did you even read my comment before rushing to reply to it?

Yes. They're in the tumblr post itself, which links to specific articles and videos where she's shown doing those things. Seriously, do I have to do all the work?

You seemed to miss an "st" there. Though I don't know why you're looking for Stewie Griffin right now.

Hm, I'm not big into Sherlock but I like it.

Thanks for the information. :)

Thank goodness, that's one place where I've never encountered it! (now, watch my next exam be in a room with a really, really loud clock...)

Re: some fan fic is legally allowed to be sold through amazon now

Verbatim quote of the post:

In case you hadn't heard. :)

They're licensing more all the time.

Right there. There is where they use the word "licensing".

Just popping in to say something I haven't seen mentioned yet and that never seems to get mentioned.

The artist/writers' TIME is of value. It's not just about supplies like pencils, paints, notebooks, canvases, computers, or programs. I do take commissions, and you aren't paying me for my computer or the word processing programs I use. You are paying for my time and effort to create something tailor-made for you, time and effort that I would spend doing something else, even writing for myself, if you weren't paying me to do it for you.

Just food for thought, because sometimes the entitlement of 'authors should write whatever I want for free' really gets under the skin. My time is valuable to me, so if you want something special, pay me, cuz as the OP says here, money is certainly a motivator.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That still doesn't answer the question of why, though. Saying that money shouldn't be the sole motivation for writing suggests that writing has to be more than a job for people. Why is that? If I work as an accountant because I need rent/grocery money, that's okay, right? Some people might do it because they love crunching numbers, and that's cool, too. It doesn't automatically make me worse at my job just because numbers aren't my passion.

Yet people still think writing is different somehow. There's this attitude that you CAN'T do it for money alone, or somehow it's BAD. People can't explain why it's bad, it just is. That's an emotional argument, not a logical one.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Jaded how? It's their own words.

"If fanfics were monetized like fanarts I would leave fandom immediately..."

They did not say it's bad and we shouldn't do it. They said if XYZ happens, I'm leaving. But they'd watch the wank from afar, natch. Your interpretation is very kind, but again-- the comment was quite succinct and you're ignoring what the person actually said.

IA, at least from what I've heard she sounds like she fits into the universe quite well. I can understand if people don't like the romance part of it, but I DO like interspecies relationships in fantasy and Tolkien already made a big deal of Legolas and Gimli, so even the elf/dwarf thing doesn't feel particularly new.

Haha, I've seen lots of mixed reactions to Radagast. I don't have much love for the film version either. I don't HATE him and I get where PJ was going with him (Hobbit was a children's book and all, PJ wanted more humor), but... I just don't really care for his scenes or the way they portray him.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this a joke about E.L. James becoming a millionaire from publishing AU Twilight fic? Because if it isn't, you look a bit silly.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
But the being commissioned part doesn't make it legal unless you're being commissioned by the copyright holder. If that's not the case, then there isn't really a huge difference between selling fanwork you made and being commissioned to create a fanwork. Not as far as copyright law is concerned, anyway.
elaminator: (The Hobbit: Dwarves)

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-03-05 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yea, Don't get me wrong, I don't automatically assume that's the only reason people could dislike her because I know better. I've been in fandom a long time and I've seen people get bent out of shape because of shippy reasons and I've also seen plenty of people who are very chill about it and don't care either way; they enjoy their ship, enjoy all the characters and let everyone else do the same. There's all kinds in fandom!
inkdust: (Default)

[personal profile] inkdust 2014-03-05 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That's part of the view of "creative professions." People don't see why a person would do them without a passion for it. They don't generally pay well, and you don't improve at them to get paid better unless you keep doing it, including usually a lot of work that won't bring you any money. If we're talking emotional versus logical arguments, I don't see a logical argument FOR writing solely for pay. It just doesn't generally work like that. It's so much to pursue for nothing but money.

This is so fucking cute but I have the feeling if I said it out loud I would summon some kind of Australian demon.

You have already summoned the demon by mocking our fine language. It muttered angrily "Fair suck of the old sauce bottle mate," and glared at you for a few moments. Then it guffawed, slapped its thighs, declared it was just "Playing sillybuggers" with you, pinched you on the cheek, slapped you on the rump, and wandered off to the nearest pub to bet on the hermit crab races. Such is life in colonial Australia.

Oh, and gap years are definitely very acceptable here - some people even take more time off in the middle of their degree. Some of this is probs because we have a student benefit called Youth Allowance that you used to be able to get while you study fulltime if you earned a certain amount of money in 12 months (that's why I took a year off) - but they've changed it to 18 months now. A lot of people work for the first 6 months to save up the money they need for travelling the next 6 months. Backpacking in Europe or a working holiday in the UK are definitely the usual travel choices.

Sandals, right? Flip-flops? Not butt-showing bathing suits. Right? Right?

Maybe we wear both.... *cackles maniacally*

Glad you enjoyed my ramblings :)

AYRT again, because I can't read.

I always heard Wolf Creek was roughly based on Ivan Milat/ Peter Falconio's murder, so I maybe it does count? Or maybe Australia is so terrifying in and of itself we don't actually need urban legends :/

(Anonymous) 2014-03-06 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
EL James became a millionaire because the system allowed her to profit from another crappy author by masquerading a fanfic as an "original" work.

This has set a dangerous precedent, and now every loser is trying to do the same.

What will be the point in writing original books, if some stupid little kid can write a "fanfic", change names and erase some canon, and become an instant hit?

If you are for this shit, you are a moron and a hypocrite.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-06 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
+1

If you're turned on by your writing, that makes it far more likely it'll be hot.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-06 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this. I don't get people who write/read M/M as M/genderswapped!F exclusively. :/

F/F switched to M/F I've never seen, so.

No, I do not. It's so goddamn boring to watch and to play.

Unless we're talking about some casual beach cricket, then I'm all for it, because that is an Australian Christmas tradition.
