If you worry about how something might or might not be potentially seen by the audience, your writing will suffer. Just write it like you want it.

Yeah, this.
There are too many people who will always dislike something about whatever you say or write.
If you start censoring yourself even though your intention isn't to offend, then the result will be insipid.

This. There are enough problems to worry about without thinking of the hypothetical reaction of your hypothetical audience.

This. There was a small period in which I got so wrapped up in how every single possible person might interpret my fic and it led to me agonizing over whether or not I'd get hate for having a character use the word 'stupid'.

Don't go down that path, OP.

This advice seems much more important and more energetic with Cobie Smulders out peering fiercely since within your icon.

(It is in any case very good advice)

I officially refuse to understand what the heck 'queerbaiting' is unless we talk constant 'no-homo' remarks (and even then, it must be OOC in order to be a problem).

There is no outward difference between what shippers call romantic subtext and signs of friendship&platonic affection.

queerbaiting is definitely a thing in anime

[personal profile] blueonblue 2014-03-09 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
They're just good friends! Official art, not fanart:

Molesting your friend when he's not wearing any pants is more than a sign of friendship for most people.

(In case the picture doesn't work, it's Ban and Ginji from GetBackers.)

Yeah, this doesn't exactly look like a couple of friends chillin' together.

I'll take your word for this, because I'm no expert when it comes to anime. I can only watch those that are well drawn, and so there are only a few I've actually seen (Wolf's Rain, Dantalian no Shoka, and some other stuff).

I'm mostly talking about Western books+TV+movies.

GetBackers was definitely not well drawn. I enjoyed it thoroughly, but would never recommend it. :) There are a lot of people who talk about queerbaiting in Sherlock, but I stay away from those discussions for various reasons.

Hahahaaaaaa~ Man I remember GetBackers. I never finished it. I want to say I'm surprised the two never banged but I'm not.

I can't remember the ending - the manga might have had one of those shounen endings with Ban and Ginji heading off together in search of new adventure.

YES! I was remembering that exact picture last night and wishing I still had it. LOL, those official pictures were the best.

Aww, I fucking loved Get Backers. And this two totally did it. My inner 15 y/o will not be convinced otherwise!

And there's also that thing with the... one that uses strings as his weapon? Him and his bodyguard has a thing, right? Was it canon? Or just winkwinknudgenudge subtext?

Having close friends in a relationship is not queerbaiting. If you constantly put little teases about how mayyyyybe the might possibly get together, and who knows maybe they're gay but maybe their not!, and keep teasing about the queerness of it all while always setting them up with het love interests....that would be queerbaiting. Having two people of the same gender have a close relationship is not queerbaiting.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Shhhhh. Don't tell Tumblr that. It will give them conniptions!

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

Queerbating is a situation where, for me, intent really does matter. If someone else ships your characters and then gets pissy that you didn't put them together, that's their problem. (Obviously, the issue is judging intent and whether we believe what creators say about their intent, but not everything that looks "slashy" is intentional, malicious queerbaiting for the lols.)

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah for sure. I can spot queerbaiting in fiction from a mile off. If the author is worried, chances are they aren't gonna queerbait.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Also note that a non-romantic Lenny/Carl type relationship is common enough that TVTropes recognizes it: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ThoseTwoGuys

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
There has to be an audience invested in the possible queer relationship before there can be queerbaiting.
Calling every two people who could possibly be in a relationship but aren't "baiting" is dumb. Don't encourage this, please.

Lenny and Carl's relationship is totally queerbaiting tho

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
saying it now

Re: Lenny and Carl's relationship is totally queerbaiting tho

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
It kind of is now, but it wasn't always. Personally, in this case, I see the way their relationship has come to be depicted as intentionally living up to queerbaiting as a trope and laughing with the audience over it rather than baiting in an effort to be dicks to the audience.

I thought there was an episode where Marge said something along the lines of them needing just stop dancing around each other without any outside intervention or something though

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Only in verse, if you can even do that. They're not dropping hiints about them BEING TOTALLY GAY and then going LOL, NO every time. They're going LOL, MAYBE. Which is different. They're not insulting anyone for thinking that they're gay. If your main characters agree with you seriously, you're not being insulted.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, UST is OK. It's cool with a guy and a girl and it's still cool with two guys or two girls. It's doesn't have to be resolved by the end of the story either, to be validated. There're plenty of UST stories that stay unresolved, nothing wrong with it. Just don't get all up in arms if people DO see them as a couple even if you don't.
