I think Gou is hilarious and probably the best female character possible for an anime like Free!. She the fujoshi avatar. Her job is to have sexy yaoi fantasies about the boys and (hopefully) let the audience watch them. I adore her but don't care about pairing her, but as long as she doesn't end up with one of the main five guys, it's all good.

I agree with OP. I hate "pair the spares" it's so useless. I get wanting everyone to be happy but that doesn't mean being in a romantic relationship.

And Sei/Gou, I don't like it. His crush is cute, but that's it. And if you pair them off together only so she's "not a threat" to your other ships, that's completely fucking stupid. (Disclaimer: I know people really, completely ship them and don't have this mentality, I'm talking about the people who do).

For Gou, I like Gou/Nagisa. They are so adorable and I think they would work.

I like the pairing, personally. Is it really pairing the spares if it's the only pairing on the show where at least one of the characters is actually interested in the other or am I misunderstanding the phrase?

That's what I was thinking. There's actually some basis for this pairing, and I thought "pair the spares" was like throwing together two random characters that don't really have anything to do with each other to get them out of the way of other ships.

Gou doesn't seem interested in anyone whether they are boy or girl. She just likes ogling defined muscles. Nothing wrong with that. (Has she seen him in his swimsuit yet? She'd probably be interested then xD)


SeiGou is not even a spare-the-pair ship since it's the only ship that has romantic interest (albeit one-sided). At least people have some canon basis for shipping it.

Every other ship is just ship-tease for the BL fangirls but nothing that is gonna surpass friendship. As much as people think Rei/Nagisa or any combination of Makoto/Haruka/Rin are canon, they are just gonna be best friends with some shipping fanservice.

I'm not really in the fandom but I wouldn't mind seeing her with someone. It doesn't need to be him but if dating would make her happy, I would love to see it. She's cute, she's a fun character and a great part of the show. (And his crush IS adorable, but I would be okay with it not going anywhere too.)

You know, I actually like all of the mainstream pairings for the show (I guess I mean the duos the show puts together whether platonically or romantically). I like Haru/Rin, Nagi/Rei, Gou/Sei, Miho/Goro (I like Mokoto period).

I agree with you, OP. I see a little attraction from Sei towards Kou, but not enough for me to be like OMG TWUU WUV. Especially since Kou doesn't seem to reciprocate any sort of interest. It's an all right ship, but not one that I prefer. There has to be a little bit more chemistry there.

Ugh, Gou/Miho would be even more "pair the spares" than Sei/Gou. :/ Like, the only reason you'd be shipping them is because they're the two most prominent female characters. Also, Miho's the teacher, so it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Also, I'm not shipping Gou with her friend who got like two minutes of screen time at most.

Sei/Gou is kind of cute, but I'm not a huge fan of him. I really like Gou/Nagisa because even though they bicker, I like how they're both pretty exuberant.

I feel you, OP. Don't care much about pairing the spares or not, but the one-sidedness of Sei's crush on her and the way the fandom completely ignores that little fact has kinda soured me on the ship. :/ Of course, I like her with Makoto and/or Nagisa, so it's not like I'm in any position to question shipping preferences.

Wouldn't the real pair-the-spares situation with Kou be if someone shipped her in a secondary ship with whoever is left over from shipping a pairing out of Haruka, Rin, Makoto? I don't know if anyone actually does this though.

It's not pairing the spares when there's actually canon interest, even if it's one-sided. Pair-the-spare would be shipping RinHaru and NagiRei and then pairing Makoto with Gou just because you don't want him to be the only single guy.

I think Seij's crush is really cute. I'd love to see him finally catch her interest and her dominating the hell out of him in every way.
