NGL, there are some characters that I just prefer as ladies. (Dean Winchester is one of them.)

I have to admit, I found it kind of weird when most people around here were acting like making a slash pairing het is the only reason for genderbending one character and not another.

I guess I just underestimate how much of fandom revolves around shipping. I have a hard time believing it when people say that's the only thing most people care about and I foolishly thought a lot of people who like genderbent fic were like OP.

I found it kind of weird when most people around here were acting like making a slash pairing het is the only reason for genderbending one character and not another.

I've seen a few writers do that before, where it was very obvious from the author notes that they didn't like (fem)slash and/or were actually homophobic, and that's why they were so interested in genderbent fic.

But, yeah, the vast majority of the genderswap writers I'm familiar with really, really like (fem)slash, but also enjoy genderswapping certain characters occasionally.

Anyone else se this secret and get all excited because they thought it ws a secret about Cass from Fallout?

Now I am disappointed.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-18 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen that fanart before, and I still got excited because I thought it was a secret about Cass.

*sigh* There needs to be a secret about Cass.

Genderbending = stupid activity.

Comments = subjective opinions. Yours added a lot, though.

Cool character design. I don't read much genderbent fic because I like the characters the way they are. If I do read it, I want both characters in a pairing (if there is one) to be switched and not just one. That's really rare in my main fandom.

I can't imagine Dean Winchester - in any incarnation - wearing skinny jeans.

I know that feel anon.
I eat up any genderbent Avengers fic I can get my hands on.
I feel I wouldn't have to, if Marvel just got with the program and added more then one main female character to the cast.

That is a super cute girl Dean. Love the hair!

Anyway, if you like it that's fine. Genderswap isn't for everyone, but it's harmless. I prefer looking at genderbent fanart than reading fanfic (and when I do read it I want both characters to be swapped), but everyone has their preferences. *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2014-03-17 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I like genderbent fic too and even though my reasons are different, I don't see anything wrong with yours.

But... won't be easier to find a canon with female characters you like instead of waiting for genderbent fics?

Same, OP! It's not about het pairings for me AT ALL.

For example, I don't ship Hannigram.

But make them both ladies? HELL YES.

...okay, you know, I'm not really terribly into SPN but I would TOTALLY read genderbent Dean/Sam fic. Recommendations? (I'll read just about anything, gen, slash, whatnot. Not a huge fan of PWP but if it's well written, okay. I'm fairly difficult to squick; if it's well done, even if it's not my thing, I'll probably like it.)

Sounds like a good reason to me. Also SPN would be a hell of a lot more interesting.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-18 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
In theory this is great but in my personal experience, it's rarely my favorite character that ever gets genderbent. It's usually the one fandom believes will "translate" more easily (i.e., more stereotypically effeminate guy). Something about that really annoys me.

I love genderbent fanart! I love them! They are often so cute and I go "awwww" at them if I'm a fan of the canon and the characters. (Genderbent fic isn't my taste though)

There's nowhere enough girl-to-dude rule 63 out there. More ladies turned into gentlemen, please.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-18 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
She looks exactly like the girl I had a crush on in high school, like even down to the way her hair flows. This is uncanny but I am happy.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-18 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
It works really well for some characters, Dean is an excellent example. It was SPN that made me love genderbent fic. There were a few really excellent stories that explored the idea, 'back in the day' <--so old.
