Evangelion Rebuild is so fucking terrible.

Evangelion in general is so fucking terrible. I watched the movie without seeing the serious and literally ended up huddled under a blanket by the end. That shit was madness.

Well I actually like the original series and the movie, it's just that Rebuild is such a blatant pandering cash cow void of any substance that it's an insult it even exists. Though I understand why the original NGE isn't exactly to everyone's taste either.

Because the Yaoi-boy characterization was from the original series, and the wanking was from the first set of movies and not the actual series.

I always read Shinji as bi

He did experience thermal expansion in the presence of Asuka, but he also clearly cared for Kaworu. He's either bi or so starved for affection that he just doesn't care, or both. But the yaoi fandom always clung to him, even in the 90s, and rightly so.

Yeah, the Eva fandom is weird because a lot of the fanboys want to read him as completely straight and a lot of the fangirls want to read him as completely gay, and neither interpretations are correct, imo.

I figure Shinji is straight, but he'd love anybody who could understand and reach him like Kaworu. In terms of what he'd like in his porn, it's all jiggly bits and vaginas (and maybe comatose girls, shinji's got a kink), but he'll probably never love anyone like he did that boy. Which is yet another irreparable scar on his soul considering what happened.

I like the new Evangelion movies - I accidentally saw the first one in the theatre the first weekend it came out, and it was a great experience. The crazy amount of merchandise is pretty funny, I mean, they have Kaworu pants.

I don't know why they exist, but they make me laugh. There's also Evangelion/Hello Kitty, some of which I own, so obviously I am part of the problem.

HAHA I'M THE PERSON WHO ALWAYS MENTIONS THAT SHINJI MASTURBATED OVER ASUKA'S COMATOSE BODY IN EOE WHENEVER ANYONE TALKS ABOUT ASUKA BEING THE ONLY ONE WHO WAS ABUSIVE IN THEIR RELATIONSHIP. I THINK QUITE A FEW OF THE FANS ON TUMBLR HATE ME.

But yeah, I'm disappointed too. For all the flaws that the anime has, I think it's superior to Rebuild. I obviously realize that Rebuild is trying to do something entirely different with an entirely different characterization of Shinji, but it's simply not as interesting to me. I realize things are going to be packed more tightly in a theatrical release as opposed to an anime, but Rebuild is simply too Shinji-centric for me. I miss all the development all the other characters got, and I'm especially resentful that Asuka got shafted so much since she's my favorite.

I wish more people on tumblr were willing to to talk about about shit besides Shinji+Kaworu because there's honestly only so much meta you can write, and there's so many other fascinating relationships highlighted -- especially in the anime. However, it would be hypocritical for me to hate on the Kawoshin fans too much because I'm hoping there's some more Asuka/Mari bait thrown in the fourth movie for the yuri fans.

Nobody else likely mentions it because by the point in the story when that incident occurred, things were just so irreparably fucked up on every front that it just seemed par for the course. Asuka's abuses stood out more to me because they happened back when the story still had a good deal of focus on relationships, and silly me, I actually thought they had half a chance of working out (yeah, I liked Asuka/Shinji). By the time of EoE, I was just like, "Nope, they would all be better off dead."

I haven't seen the new movies but there's kind of always been that Shinji/Kaworu (and no one else) part of fandom. I think part of the reason it's bigger now is because it's generally more acceptable to be a slash fangirl then it was in the 90s (girls were also just breaking into anime fandom in bigger numbers in the 90s, so our voices were a lot quieter back then.)

I have no opinions on shipping Shinji with anyone but I hatttteeed that scene and I hated the original movies. In fact I really only liked Eva up until before the final episode of the anime. The final episode ruined it, the movies made it worse.

The main reason the Shinji/Kaworu fandom really exploded recently was because of the third Rebuild movie. It really was basically Shinji/Kaworu fanservice: The Movie.
