You and everybody else.

I met some long-lost relatives once. They didn't make me mad. They were nice and my mom still talks on the phone with one of them every now and then.

Yeah we had a thread on this a while back! About tropes people hate. This was one.

Agreed so hard. I can't name a single series where I would have been glad to see one crawl out of the woodwork. Double the rage if the character has been assumed dead or has been kept a secret from everyone so far.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. It's up there with love triangles for me. Both are so overdone and always unnecessary.

Yeah, I don't particularly like it either. Which is weird because I have a long lost half-brother I did not mean until I was 13 and we got a letter from him in the mail.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I avoided watching the spn episode 'Jump the Shark' for the longest time because I hate this trope and thought I'd hate Adam as a result. In the end though I didn't hate him; I just felt incredibly bad for him.

Eh, for me, it depends on if it's vaguely hinted at beforehand and it ultimately makes sense in a story context. Most of the time, it's done rather poorly and usually comes off as some cheap ditch effort for shock value or a half-hearted attempt to keep things fresh.

(I'm looking at you, Vulcan in the 'X-Men' comics... though War of Kings was alright, I guess)

Some things I'm ok with it and some I'm not. Like in Supernatural--I can TOTALLY see John as ending up with an illegitimate son. But some other characters I can't buy as having done so...as long as its in-character I don't mind it too much.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually liked Paige. Not her introduction so much, the whole destined power of three thing randomly pulling another sister out of the woodwork, but Paige herself was actually one of my favourite characters. It's been years since I watched the show, but I remember kind of clinging to her a bit while Piper and Phoebe's relationships started going all over the damned place and making me twitchy.

I'm more irritated that Adam was brought in as a convenient plot point and then they never mention him again.

Adam... their brother... who is trapped in hell...

Depends on its execution.

Truth in life, though, sometimes long-lost relatives don't change your life at all.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I liked Paige, but mostly because I can't stand Shannen Doherty.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
BBC's Robin Hood wins at this trope, bringing in a long-lost sister (for Guy), long-lost father (for Robin) and long-lost half-brother (for Guy AND Robin) in the space of six episodes.

Season 3 was so embarrassingly shit.

I was too distracted by the AMAZING GORGEOUS HAIR in the middle picture to really pay attention to the secret, I'm afraid.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Gonna mirror liking Paige. Also they kinda had to at that point because whats-her-face left and they had the built-in clause of needing three. I guess they could have just ended the show but we can't stop this money train yet.

I wouldn't quite say it makes me *angry* but it's a very obvious, tired, contrived plot-twist, and it has the stink of the shark on it. Too soap opera-ish and melodramatic, and a pretty lazy move on the part of the writers.

Eh, it works for me sometimes, and other times it doesn't. Really depends on how it's written, and how many seasons the show has under its belt.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Do not, EVER, watch past season 1 of Once Upon a Time. Circa halfway through season 3, the chances of any newly introduced character NOT being related to one of the main characters (who are all, at this point, related to each other) approaches zero.

It depends. I didn't mind on Charmed because they had to do something after Doherty left since it being 3 sisters was built into the concept and also because the mother's affair had already been mentioned so Paige's origins actually made sense.

When it comes out of left field and is just a ratings play, though, its annoying.

Betcha don't watch any soaps.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
This (and bringing people back from the dead) is one of their favorite tropes, especially when they want to do a big cliffhanger on a Friday. Every once in a while, I have to wonder where all the birth control went.

For the most part I hate it because it's generally lazy writing, but like any trope in can be good in the hands of the right writer.

.....but why is the one from Bones bad? Hell, do you get mad at the "long lost dad/mom" thing too? Bones was gonna have that regardless what with the way her family life went.

I don't know the others.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I like Paige just fine as a character, but the story of Patty's pregnancy with her always bothered me. I'll buy that Phoebe was too young to remember. I'll even suspend my disbelief that Piper was too young to remember and that both girls just thought Patty had put on weight. BUT...If all of the sisters are spaced about two years apart (which I believe they are, or at least, that's the impression I got from season one since Phoebe gets a job in "Dead Man Dating" to pay for Prue's 27th birthday gift, and Phoebe's 23, which would make Piper 25ish) then Prue should've been between five and six while Patty was pregnant.

Idk. The slapdash story about how Paige came to be has always irked me. Especially because in the five seasons they had her, they never really sold a sisterly connection between any of the three of them. She always felt more like a cousin. Her relationship with Phoebe was better and closer, but she and Piper were always, ALWAYS really distant and in terms of selling the sisterly Power of 3 aspect, it just never worked for me.
