Aw, I like that doodle. It's funny looking and obviously not taking itself too seriously. No cringe there.

That fanart is adorable. Not a masterpiece by any means, but definitely adorable. :3

I'm motivated by them, but because a it seems like a lot of younger artists are just excited to make things and show them to people. It's a quality that I've definitely lost some as I gotten better and grown older.

Yes, this!

This this

There's more heart in young kid's stuff than technically correct pieces made to get likes.

Those aren't your only two choices when reading.

So this. I wish I was a kid again and draw just for the heart of it.

I don't see anything wrong with that? As long as you don't go around bullying people for making shitty art. 'Cause honestly many of those people are going to keep getting better and be really good someday.

This was going to be my answer, honestly. I've done the same when coming across poorly written plays and books. I just don't, you know, say anything about it unless the writer is already dead.

IDK I like watching the new artists get excited and throw out random crap. It will calm down with age, enjoy your crazy colours and character designs while you can! You go new!artists!

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-03-21 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I remember my early days were like that. I designed a character who was like RAINBOWS EVERYWHERE all over her clothes.

I'm not even embarrassed by it anymore I just find it cute and amusing.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is it elitist to want to be better?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
If you're good at something, you're hurting the feelings of people who aren't good at it.

I sort of feel the same about bad fanfic, tbh. At a very early point I decided: I do not want to write like this. Even abandoned a WIP completely because I thought it had too many bad tropes and shitty writing.

Me too. But then I look at all the badfic writers and they seem to be having so much fun.

The problem is that the more I write, the more I see the errors in my writing. And there's the whole problem of finishing fics, which seems to get worse.

I read a really good post on this subject, relating to comics, but still really relevant.</a?

I don't abandon my badfic, but I also don't post it where other people can see it.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2014-03-20 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as you aren't telling the artists this then I don't see a problem.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I was the same way. I really didn't want to seem like an over-eager kid who didn't know what they were doing. For what it's worth, it worked!

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Sort of like me, except that I want to improve, so that I never have to resort to using those doll bases or whatever they are called.

I always wonder about certain fanartists

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Because I wouldn't call their art bad, except that I know which characters they are trying to portray. I mean they will usually get something right (like the hairstyle or the eyes) and their characters will look like people, but things like the face shape, nose shape, and coloring will be wrong.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I like bad fanart and fanfic, it's good for fandom, it's fun for artists. Also after reading a bad fic (and probably a lol worthy one, these are my favorites) I suddenly hear the Call to Write.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 09:49 am (UTC)(link)
That picture looks like those kiddie scribbles in anime - the ones that are supposed to be drawn by little kids but it's really, really obvious that it was professional artists trying their hardest to draw poorly.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
It's always good to improve, even if you use others' examples as a reason to improve. Just as long as you aren't harassing them over their not-so-pretty art, it's all good.

I'm no artist, but my attitude is probably far worse than yours. I always cringe whenever I see people imitate the anime style badly and never improve from that... even more so when they seem to pimp their art like it's the greatest thing ever.
