In case anyone else was as mystified as I was, OP is talking about this person:

Thank you so much. I had absolutely no idea who that was supposed to be.

Thank you, anon, this was very helpful.

I still haven't heard of the guy, but at least I know who I haven't heard of.

Yes, thank you. My best guess was Vlad, but I knew it was the wrong hat.

I'm not sure how this is fandom, but here's what I think about it anyways.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
You're wrong, OP. Yes, people often gave false confessions after being tortured by the Church, but you're overlooking the existence of accomplices and eye-witnesses.

I totally thought OP was talking about Richard III, so thank you for this.

Who?

[personal profile] feotakahari 2014-03-20 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Did a bit of digging. Turns out this is Gilles de Rais.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilles_de_Rais

I can't speak to the secret, since I don't know enough about the evidence for and against his guilt.

Edit: Too slow once again!

Sources? Or just speculation?

Well Margaret Murray said it, and it's not like she was completely wackadoodle or anything

What is your evidence that it was framed? I mean, it could have been...but it also could have been true. Unless you have very compelling evidence saying it wasn't true, don't get upset.

Welp, I was going to say that I can safely say I like know such works as I have encountered no such works, but I am very fond of Wikipedia, so I guess I can't.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-20 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I know who that is. I'll even overlook your defense for a bit. What I don't get is where and how the hell is he a common manga villain? That's all I want to know.

Now I'm wondering how bad it is that I knew who this was straight off. Gilles de Rais and Elizabeth of Bathory come up a lot if you're researching a) vampires or b) serial killers, and they're both the centre of similar debates.

I'm leery of the Church conspiracy theory, though. Among other things, de Rais was subject to a secular investigation as well as an ecclesiastical one, and it was a secular noble who got his lands afterwards, not the Church.

I was excited because I thought this was going to be Grigori Rasputin. Now I'm simply disappointed and looking for a "good name" to besmirch. Oh hey.

But, um, seriously, what evidence do you have?

Heh, I figured out who it was just from text of the secret, go me. It did sorta seem like he was ending up a villain a lot in anime for a bit there, with Fate/Zero and then Makai Ouji.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I found out about him when I was looking up the characters from the Jeanne d'Arc PSP game. The game doesn't touch on any of that. He's one of the heroes in it, no less, and with a hilarious flipped hairdo and eye makeup.

Late and it's probably already been said, but he was portrayed as a hero in the PSP tactical RPG Jeanne d'Arc.

Edit: I also think his portrayal in Fate/Zero was fantastic and incredibly accurate to what historians have said about him and his personality. I would fight OP over this.

Really though, Gilles de Rais has a "fandom"?
I'm uh, a little weirded out, actually.
