I'm pretty sure season 2 will fix that. She really didn't get a lot of time in S1, not to mention that there were some moments where she was extremely intense and creepy

Judging from the first season, there will probably be more catering to Levi's character due to his popularity than more focus on Hanji's character.

I don't watch the anime (just read the manga), but I'd say fandom also influenced the view on the character. People who write/draw her usually do so where she's the happy-go-lucky person we get to see in fanon.

While yeah, the fandom got some pretty big misconceptions, I don't think you can really blame the anime for leaving this scene out. It is very firmly placed after Hange finds out there are titans in the wall. And when our final shot of the season is walltitan, where else were they going to put it? Seems to me like it is something that will be included in the second season when they, you know, actually have time to go into it.

Hanji is one of my favourite characters from Shingeki, so I was kind of unhappy with how the anime portrayed her too. She is definitely a lot more campy and smiley in the anime than she is the manga, but it's not so much her characterization that bothered me, as the way they shoe-horned her into the role of 'mad scientist' of the Corps. She comes across as so much more the second-in-command in the manga. I know it's not really that big of a thing, but yes, it bothered me.
Also, like everyone mentioned, I think fandom itself is responsible for most of her bad characterization, to be honest.
(And I was so disappointed they didn't include this scene. I was looking forward to it all season long. Maybe they'll include it in the second season, whenever that comes out. Can't say I care anymore, though.)

I really do think she has much more of a leader role in the manga than in the anime. Disappointed that that didn't translate over into the anime especially since Hanji is my all time favorite character of Shingeki

Agreed. Agree with this so much OP. Ugh even worse is how she's often portrayed in the 'Levihan' pairing. While I don't necessarily dislike Hanji's portrayal in the anime it definitely gave fandom a chance to latch on to her as a "genki girl".

Not gonna lie, that is the only reason I can't join the LeviHan fandom. They are definitely more of a brOTP all things considered.

But they make Hanji overly feminine and happy-go-lucky... and that is just not Hanji at all.

I resent the anime for a lot of things, her characterization included.

I agree so hard.

I'm not even trying to be a 'manga purist' or whatever but it just seems like the anime got her character so fundamentally wrong. And she's one of my favorites so it's kind of a slap to the face.

I mean Hanji cares about human life. She thinks before she rushes into situations. The reason she wants to study titans is because she thinks she needs to come at the problem from a different angle than everyone else and that is a really wise move. She knows there's something wrong about them, and guess what she's right.

But in the anime they have her laughing after Trost was just demolition and lots of soldiers died. They have her shrugging at the trap to capture Annie saying "oh I didn't think all this would be necessary". When in the anime everything there was her responsibility. And don't get me started on the OVA where she's endangering everyone.

I mean like at this point I can't see how they could change in role in the manga for season 2, but then again I don't see how they got what the did from what was already there.

Sorry for the wall of text. I have a lot of feelings about this.

I'm not sure where you're getting that. The anime has been faithful to her scenes in the manga. They can't include everything and I don't think that scene really showed us anything new about her character.

I'm not going to trust your judgment given you call her "they" when the author's so-called confirmation was a joke and it seems 90% of the interpretation (that I have seen) comes from her being "too masculine" to identify as a girl, thus being born out of sexism.
