Excellent choice of image.

(BTW, does anyone know what a "bean feast" is? I've been wondering for 20 years.)

apparently it's an annual dinner given to employees by their employer

Kind of? In the nice company barbecue kind of way? Basically, it's when someone throws a party at a nice location with lots of food. Kind of like a wedding reception without the wedding and preferably with fewer annoying family members.

That's why you never, ever promise such a thing. No deadlines. Gives you the freedom to fuck off for nine months at a time and come back with a surprise!update just when people have almost given up hope. They'll be too happy to get pissed at you.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
...not necessarily. In my fandom there's this one story that's well loved but rarely updated*, but this one BNF asshole made a point of taking every new update and saying how terrible it was and not worth the wait, and how said author was writing it wrong because only said BNFs ideas were right. And then Asshole BNF had the inevitable posse that echoed everything they said. They drove the author away from message boards where the author used to have a friendly welcome and nice conversation, and then eventually seemed to disappear. I still blame Asshole BNF because I'm almost positive they caused enough damage to stop the story's updating completely.

I got some personal justice/vengeance against that BNF though, that's my one happy thought about the whole situation.

*Said author happened to be a working mother with a small child, and I wouldn't be shocked if she's had another one since the last update. The worst part? Asshole BNF was also a Mom. And would go on threads and bitch all the time about not getting updates and criticizing the author for using twitter instead of writing the new chapter.

I dunno. I quite like it when people mark their fic as going to be completed, or having it all planned out, or having a regular update schedule. Means I don't have to bother reading them Those are the ones guaranteed to never be completed and the author to vanish. Its like a law of the internet or something. Generally as soon as an author starts swearing they are going to update or complete it means they are in stage three of procrastination and guilt-disengagement.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you. This is why I never promise updates, ever. I have a really long story going, and I want to be able to go at my own pace and comfort level, so I can't ever guarantee that I'm going to be able to write that week. Whenever I've done it in the past, I've let myself and others down, and so I feel like I want to disappear permanently.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, in my case, it's that every time I look at the screen I feel physically sick. And the thing is, I write computer manuals for a living, so it's not as if I haven't developed techniques for writing stuff I really don't want to write. I want to update my stories, but it's like I've had aversion therapy.

Not in my experience.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
You are astoundingly right.

Most of the time if I confess publically online that I have a fic completed and it only needs posting, and/or I have a definite posting schedule, I stop posting that fic entirely. Yet I have have successfully completed dozens of other fics.

I think it's something to do with it no longer being fun if it's to a schedule. Fic writing is a hobby and once it becomes work something happens to the urge.

stage three of procrastination and guilt-disengagement

Now I want to know what the other two stages are so I can avoid them - although to be honest, I don't think it's possible once stage one commences.

It's probably because one of them didn't promise you anything so they're not disappointing any expectations. They people who promise and then don't deliver are breaking a promise.

I don't write WIP but if I did I would never promise a thing unless I had it all written out beforehand.

i agree

it's like this friend everyone has that says yes when you ask them if they wanna hang out and then never shows up or says no at the last minute
(and you keep asking them to hang out even though you don't know why because you know they'll pull the exact same shit every time)

man that bullshit pisses me off

(I give people more leeway on fics tho. idk)

I guess I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt, so if I don't know if it's that they made an empty promise and were lazy/badly organized or if RL just reared its ugly head, I go with the latter in my mind. And I don't really put stock in those dates anyway. I just email subscribe to fic and go about my life thinking about other things. Then it's a pleasant surprise if I get that email!

I can understand your frustration, though. :/

Yea, I get that. Unfinished WIP's are frustrating and I completely understand why some people don't bother reading them; sometimes I wish I didn't, but I cave in no time when something sounds good (then regret it later).

I do understand that sometimes things come up and not everything is going to be updated in a timely manner; I don't hold that against the author. Still, it's best to not set a regular schedule for updating either because in most cases those don't work out.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is why I don't post anything until it's complete.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Same here.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
And I don't read anything until it's complete. It's a strange kind of entitlement out there.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel your pain. I mean, I don't think I'm entitled to fic or anything but I can't help but feel a little betrayed when someone says something like "I already have the next chapter written and it should be posted in the next few days!" and then months later there's still no new chapter. Sometimes I genuinely worry that the person just died or something, especially if they haven't updated or posted any other fics since that one.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. I remember one WIP in particular that I got completely hooked on; the author said after posting part 8 that the last 2 parts were written and would be going up shortly. Of course, it never happened. (And she didn't die... she just moved on to other things.)

I can accept someone not finishing off a WIP, but what I'll never understand is when they says it's actually FINISHED but somehow can't get round to posting the last bit. WTF?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Same.

Is it so hard to wait until you're done writing the story to post it? Even if you do post it in installments.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
When they post an announcement instead of a new chapter...

"IT'S ALMOST DONE! NEXT WEEK I'LL POST A NEW CHAPTER!"

Years later...

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
A minute of silence for all those incredible fics I loved that were never updated again. ;_;

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
I agree so hard. Don't promise things if you're just going to let everyone down.
