I don't think me boycotting a movie that I want to see is going to have much of an effect. So I might as well go see it. I can like something and be critical of it at the same time.

True.

(Although, Red Diamond Ranter sounds to me like someone having a tantrum because people aren't reading their OC fics.)

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
who's red diamond ranter. If you mean me, eh I don't give a care if you don't want to read them , I just don't like it when people are rude/ jerks about the subject when it's mentioned and think they're being just as bratty as people who shriek that people SHOULD read their fics.

"I don't like fics with OCs I prefer reading about the canon characters" <-- okay.

"I'm not interested in fics with OCs, they're not my thing" <---okay

"It's probably a shitty self insert fic where you sue plays 'find the sausage with a hot male lead." <--- Can you not, like seriously?

"Nobody cares about your Sue" <--- oh grow the fuck up.

My apologies, I was confused - I thought the comment at the bottom of the secret was your response to the comment inside the red diamond (which I thought was not-you), and what I was strongly agreeing with was your comment that people can use the Backspace button at any time if they don't care for what they're reading.

a drop of white makes you white at this point. There's gonna be laws about it soon if SJW's have their way.

n!s

I am never going to boycott something just because someone else tells me to, especially not a film that gets fandom's knickers in a twist. I want to judge for myself whether something's 'problematic', and how can I do that without seeing the evidence?

TB

In my experience the quality of any fic in a fandom will be pretty bad as long as the quantity is small. The less people are putting their ideas out there, the less likely someone with the right ideas and the right ability comes along. I think that's the problem with OC fic, since it's so reviled not many people try their hand at it, and so there isn't that much.

I agree with everything you said, too.

Yeah ... except that that's not absolutely ironclad either. The Mononoke fandom comes to mind: not many fics or fanartists, but in my experience most of what is out there ranges from decent to spectacular.

"How to like problematic things while recognizing they're problematic" is a very well-circulated concept by now, OP.

Re: n!s

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I know logically that this is true, but... ugh, I wish my friends would remember it. Or at least act like they do instead of pretending the things they like are "flawless" and "perf", while the things they don't are "literal shit". Even if the two have roughly the same amount and degree of dodgy stuff.

Just a nitpick but...iirc, she was described as having olive skin. Which is a skin tone that whites can have, as well as non-whites, so you might have been more accurate to have said "of ambiguous race" than "ambiguously brown".

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

I'm Greek, olive-skinned, and obviously Caucasian European. Skin-tone has little to do with it. Race is a social construct.

Yep. There's also the fact that her District is in the Appalachians, where the likeliest sources of olive skin demographic-wise is Native Americans and Italians. Obviously it's the far future and all, but it's hardly a migratory hot spot to explain why the demographics changed so much. It's been awhile since I glanced at the fandom, but I seem to remember that people would use the current demographics argument to support minority districts (the electronics district whose number is escaping me was OBVIOUSLY based on Silicon Valley and was filled with Asian people, which always struck me as super skeevy), but denied it could be used about Katniss.

My head canon is that D12 was the refuge for a nearby reservation and a nearby town (or the elite of a city?), the two groups didn't like to mix early on, and that's why there was the historic Town/Seam divide that allowed for such genetic differentiation.

It's not usually that the OC's are bad, but that the writing is bad. If you're a shitty writer, you're going to have shitty OC's.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly!

A better thing to do is look at the writing in the first chapter and if it's terrible than you can assume the whole story is like that. Or if the summary already seems terrible. Sometimes the summary looks good but the inside is terrible and sometimes the summary gives it away.

Also when it comes to writing OC fics , the writer's main motive for writing the fic will tell if the OCs are going to be the annoying sort. If the writers just all about their OCs you can expect that the OCs are going to take over.
