I agree. I haven't read the new runs yet but Carol in old comics was great. And I liked the costume with the scarf tied to her hip.

It's possible the costume changed just got more people into her. It makes it seem like Marvel is now taking her seriously, too.

Personally, Shanna the She Devil could be the greatest character Marvel has, but when I see her in her tiny leather bikiny on the cover it makes me want to read about her less, not more.

I cared! I've been a fan since Chris Claremont was writing her. Her Binary costume rocked and also covered up, so I don't think it's just "omg her legs are showing". The new costume is part of taking her more seriously and promoting her as a solo hero, so I think you should be happy that she's got a lot more fans now. I am!

She wasn't as accessible to new female audiences back then. Yeah she was awesome, but she was still in a fanservice-y outfit with hella male gaze in a lot of books featuring her. For a lot of girls getting into comics, that's alienating. Her new series and new look was also launched around the time Avengers came out, which brought in a lot of new lady comic book fans.

She's cool, but I feel like everyone is trying to make her out to be the Wonder Woman of Marvel. She's not.

I think a lot of it is that the relaunch plus very supportive creative team plus new costume has drawn a lot of people who were not previous comic readers into staring to read the book. Most of the people I know who are huge fans of this incarnation of the character are only just starting out in comics and started with this book entirely because the fanbase was so welcoming and had such a spirit of inclusion.

I'm not saying every single person is like that, but for women especially, getting into comics can be scary (I've been reading comics since I was a little kid, but I still won't go into a new comic shop without prepping myself by looking up the exact title/artist/writer/etc of what I'm looking for because of how many times I've been dismissed by dudebro workers) and DeConnick and the editorial team and fandom seem to be working really hard to make the medium seem open and welcoming to new people. Which, frankly, I really appreciate despite not being particularly into Carol's story myself. I've definitely noticed a difference of both the gender make-up I see at cons and the willingness of my fandom friends to give comics a chance, and everyone I ask tends to attribute their new openness towards comics to either the MCU, Kelly Sue DeConnick, or Gail Simone.

Love or hate Carol as a character, but you have to appreciate what the title has done to energize a group of new female comics readers.

Unrelated to the sort of nonsensical content of this secret (you're mad because....people who like something...like it?), I'm always pleased to see this cover, which was partially drawn in my comic shop and features a lot of local artists and members of the community :D

I don't really care about the character, but I am tired of tumblr promoting everything about her in the comics tag. Give other characters some spotlight.
