Stephanie Brown and Peter Parker are both horrible characters, but neither of them can hold a candle to the sheer awfulness that is Hal Jordan.

I've tried really hard to like Hal Jordan in general, and the closest I ever came to it was with GLTAS. Even then, he p. much got usurped by Razer, Aya, and their romance, especially in the second half of the show. A shame, since I thought they'd started one of the better Hal characterizations in years, imo. Though I did like the 'Spectre' series from a couple years back. That was kinda a neat take on the character.

(As an aside note, I've played way too much 'Old Republic', because I keep wanting to type 'Hal Jordan' as 'Hal Jorgan'. Every dang time. *sigh*)

Stephanie Brown was amazing. Hal Jordan is a lot better post-Rebirth (seriously, if you dislike him now you should've read 60s, 70s or 80s Green Lantern, keeeee-RIST)

I agree on Peter Parker, though. Fuck that asshole.

Yeah, this I will agree with. Hal in the 70's/80's is a hard read, to say the least. (I know a lot of people give him flack for the whole Arisia thing in particular -it's sort of like when Hank Pym hit Janet van Dyne in terms of notoriety-, but I think most of that could be attributed to Steve Englehart's own proclivities, imo)

The part that really confuses me is that as far as I'm aware, most Cass fans are also Steph fans, or at least neutral about her. So the issue was just Cass not being Batgirl anymore, not that Steph replaced her.

(I'm a huge fan of both, but I think I like Steph as Batgirl and Cass in a Nightwing-like "graduated" role best for both of them.)

Yeah, most people are fans of both -- and of Barbara Gordon, too. There's a continuum of female members of the Batfamily that has something of a rabid fanbase -- probably because they're so intertwined with Bruce and the other boys, they're basically a legitimate family at this point. Babs has always been the first one to call Bruce out on his shit, too.

For the record -- as a Green Lantern fan, "my" GL is Guy Gardner, as he was the one I was exposed to the most when I started reading comics (80s Justice League International ftw.) I never really cared for Captain Whitebread Hal Jordan. When Kyle took over, I initially ignored him until sometime after the Zero Hour event when I just picked up an issue -- don't even remember why -- and started reading. IMO Kyle's era has some of the best stories in comics, especially when Ron Marz was at the helm.

I was not upset when Hal came back. I'd been following his path through villainy and the afterlife (I've said he was more interesting when he was evil or dead) and when he was brought back for GL Rebirth I was genuinely cheering him on. Part of Hal's problem is that his Silver and Bronze Age persona is basically, well... Captain Whitebread, with a bit of douchebag to make things interesting. But Geoff Johns IMO did a lot to save the character, making him a brash, anti-authoritarian daredevil still haunted by his actions as Parallax even if it wasn't his fault.

I kind of miss Kyle's era, I'll admit -- I liked the vintage sci-fi feel of many arcs, especially in the late 90s; but watching the GL corps come back under Kyle's hand was really satisfying to a reader who actually wasn't really interested in GL when it was a corps and not just one guy.

Yes, most are, and a lot of Cass fans ship her with Steph (me included). So the Steph example is a bit out of place there. I think most Cass fans' anger after her Batgirl run had nothing to do with Stephanie replacing her, and more to do with her change in her characterization.

To be fair there were some unfortunate implications in replacing one of the few POCs in the Bat Family with a white woman and I understand why some Cass fans are still upset about how badly done it was.

Yeah, I don't think I've really heard Cass fangirls call Steph "vapid." I love Cass as Batgirl. I love Steph as Spoiler. One is not superior to the other.

But Hal...yeah.

Or hell, if you want a DC example, how 'bout St. Barry coming in to ERASE Wally.

Like I said above, I think Geoff Johns has done a lot to make Barry and Hal both better characters. In the Silver and Bronze Age Barry was very one-dimensional; I like him a lot better post-Rebirth.

I never cared for Wally, though I'll be happy to see him return. I'm mostly just mad that they ruined Bart.

I blame DC, they got us so used to things being cancelled halfway through, writers being fired for having and using talent, and for half-assed retcons and reboots, that we forgot that sometimes Professional Comic Book Companies, like Marvel, have storylines that really can be planned and delivered successfully.

It really drives me crazy that DC is so bad about this. Dan Didio did a lot to save DC in the mid-00s (I always felt like the tense run-up to Infinite Crisis was in part mirroring the trouble DC was going through at the time) but his shoot-from-the-hip style and generally not giving a fuck about PR has done a lot of damage to DC's image. It doesn't help that Marvel has hoovered up the lion's share of potential fans through their movie franchise and their ability to not fucking alienate everyone who isn't a 40-something white dude.

I was always a Marvel girl growing up, but Harley Quinn in B:TAS made me delve into the Batman universe at 13.

And 20 years later seriously, what the fuck have they done to her? Complex, interesting character with intriguing and awful relationships turned into a sex kitten with no personality. Old Harley would probably slap currant Harley with her mallet. Her characterization and outfit in Suicide Squad made me want to vomit.

A lot of people were butthurt about Wally replacing Barry in the late 80s, and that's including in-universe.

But Barry never outright replaced Wally. If New 52 hadn't happened they'd both be side-to-side along with Bart Allen.

Well but Wally stole their hearts since he managed to hold mantle for 25 years, right? Nobody (maybe 40 years old people) was asking for Barry to return. Flash just needed a better status quo with lessened Speed force drama. Instead they murked up even worse.

Don't even get me start on new 52. I love Barry but what's done to Wally and Bart is disgusting.
