i.e. daemons are partly what animals a person is aware of and what there exist in the vicinity region so Old World people never had New World daemons until the last few centuries, and even then it was exotic until the last century or so when zoos and mass media made knowing about foreign animals easily accessible. Which means that Steve is a little thrown by how common 'exotic' daemons are in comparison to his time - they were there, but not nearly as common or normal as they are now.
And don't get me started on witches in this world.
Because I have ~ideas~ about who and what the Amazons were in a world with witches.no subject

The only bit I have up right now is here (a short 5+1 fill), though I'll be re-posting that to AO3 soon and hopefully once I get more freetime, I can start posting more of this particular AU soon. Want me to shoot you a PM on here once I get it up on AO3?

Are you nyxelestia on AO3, too? Or someone else? I shall subscribe. :)

Are you gonna deal with the ability to leave each other thing?

I was originally planning on leaving out the witches and bears, but then I got ideas, namely around Tony. First it was the idea that Tony's mom was a witch, which made her and Howard's deaths all the more traumatic - Tony grew up fully expecting his mother to outlive him and suddenly losing her threw everyone for a loop. Also, Jarvis - the original one, not the AI - was an armored bear, with the canon pronunciation because Tony's affectionately mangled mispronunciation of the Nordic spelling. He is also how/why Tony was able to make everything himself
IN A CAVE! FROM A BOX OF SCRAPS!in captivity in Afghanistan - Jarvis taught Tony some elements of ursic black-smithing.Also, because bears, 'ursic' is a word in this world, technically meaning bear-like but almost exclusively used to mean "like armored bears" not "like bears (in general)".
/needs to stop with the worldbuilding
And I've started the address the 'leaving' issue in the little bit I have posted here! Namely, I imply that nowadays there is a type of 'surgical' procedure available to make it safe to leave a daemon behind. There is some actual backstory, though (which also doubles as 'how Howard and Maria met in the first place').

I kid. They actually brought that up in the books. One dude's daemon became a dolphin. He lives on a boat. I read that and was like, "Well, shit, son."

(Anonymous) 2014-04-08 09:02 am (UTC)(link)Same goes for a horse daemon - you probably don't find a daemon that size in your average human being's soul. Assuming, for example, that once the Spanish had loosed horses on the plains of America, then Native American's daemons started settling as horses - you probably still would only find horses in the most uncommon of Native Americans, and possibly only non-fighting women, because the typical traits of a horse are the opposite of what you'd want in a warrior (since horses are prey animals).
