See, I came across daemons and had the exact opposite reaction from you. I was like, "Yes, I need this. Fuck the story. Tell me more of these creatures."

But, um, good luck.

I love them too.

I was honestly disappointed they weren't further explored in the books or that if there was an explanation it was something like, "Because witches."

Yeah, I would have loved to learn more about them. I was always really interested in the personality correlations, but the actual why and how is pretty crazy to wonder about.

Very true! You could go on forever trying to think of the possibilities. Also, the rules for them were inconsistencies.

I'm writing a Daemon AU for the Avengers and I've gotten ridiculously caught up in the worldbuilding and ramifications and history and what not.

i.e. daemons are partly what animals a person is aware of and what there exist in the vicinity region so Old World people never had New World daemons until the last few centuries, and even then it was exotic until the last century or so when zoos and mass media made knowing about foreign animals easily accessible. Which means that Steve is a little thrown by how common 'exotic' daemons are in comparison to his time - they were there, but not nearly as common or normal as they are now.

And don't get me started on witches in this world. Because I have ~ideas~ about who and what the Amazons were in a world with witches.

Please link when you're done and/or post? Are you on AO3? I'm loving the sound of this. :)

I am, in fact, on AO3! :D However, at the moment, most of it isn't even written, letalone posted.

The only bit I have up right now is here (a short 5+1 fill), though I'll be re-posting that to AO3 soon and hopefully once I get more freetime, I can start posting more of this particular AU soon. Want me to shoot you a PM on here once I get it up on AO3?

Eeeee!! Oh, Phil.....
Are you nyxelestia on AO3, too? Or someone else? I shall subscribe. :)

Sounds awesome. I normally leave witches out but that's super cool. You thinking of writing it anytime soon?

Are you gonna deal with the ability to leave each other thing?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-04-08 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
I've already started writing it! Most of it is still in the planning stages due to timing constraints.

I was originally planning on leaving out the witches and bears, but then I got ideas, namely around Tony. First it was the idea that Tony's mom was a witch, which made her and Howard's deaths all the more traumatic - Tony grew up fully expecting his mother to outlive him and suddenly losing her threw everyone for a loop. Also, Jarvis - the original one, not the AI - was an armored bear, with the canon pronunciation because Tony's affectionately mangled mispronunciation of the Nordic spelling. He is also how/why Tony was able to make everything himself IN A CAVE! FROM A BOX OF SCRAPS! in captivity in Afghanistan - Jarvis taught Tony some elements of ursic black-smithing.

Also, because bears, 'ursic' is a word in this world, technically meaning bear-like but almost exclusively used to mean "like armored bears" not "like bears (in general)".

/needs to stop with the worldbuilding

And I've started the address the 'leaving' issue in the little bit I have posted here! Namely, I imply that nowadays there is a type of 'surgical' procedure available to make it safe to leave a daemon behind. There is some actual backstory, though (which also doubles as 'how Howard and Maria met in the first place').

I always had mixed feelings about daemons, even as a kid. The idea initially seemed cool, but it really bugged me that people just went around with their soul bared, so to speak. It came off intrusive and too personal. But hell if it doesn't make great fusion fic.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2014-04-08 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I get what you mean. That's why I always felt that daemons should be able to leave the presence of their human. That way you can have the best poker face, or avoid them becoming kidnapped, or get around things like trying to fit a bear in a smart car.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-08 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
That last one, though! I wonder what you're supposed to do if you've got a creature like, say, a large fish which you have to lug around. It'd be something to behold, I guess.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2014-04-08 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
You die. It's that simple.

I kid. They actually brought that up in the books. One dude's daemon became a dolphin. He lives on a boat. I read that and was like, "Well, shit, son."

(Anonymous) 2014-04-08 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Geez, I guess you just have to hope your daemon doesn't settle into something unwieldy. Like a dolphin. (Seriously, that SUCKS.)

That was always what I wondered. Like FJ said, we know what happens to people with aquatic daemons (they have to live on the water) but I've always wondered what happens if you have, like, a horse or a bull daemon, and you have to walk into the store to get a bottle of milk--are the aisles in the store just bigger so the big and unwieldy daemons don't knock shit over?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-08 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
My theory is, probably not. From my (probably flawed) understanding of the books, it seems like only the truly unusual (and powerful?), uncommon individuals got large daemons - case in point, Stelmaria. Lord Asriel has a genuinely large, powerful, imposing personality and spirit, such that he pursues concepts as unusual and absurd/preposterous to your average citizen as tearing a hole in the universe. Conversely, folks who are known to be meek or shy or anxious have small daemons, like mice. So if you have a daemon as large as bull, you probably are in a position in life where you can find someone else to do your shopping for you - after all, can you imagine Lord Asriel in a Tesco comparing milk expiration dates? Me neither.

Same goes for a horse daemon - you probably don't find a daemon that size in your average human being's soul. Assuming, for example, that once the Spanish had loosed horses on the plains of America, then Native American's daemons started settling as horses - you probably still would only find horses in the most uncommon of Native Americans, and possibly only non-fighting women, because the typical traits of a horse are the opposite of what you'd want in a warrior (since horses are prey animals).

I thought that had an interesting effect on their culture. Like it was totally normal to see other people's souls but touching them was the taboo

(Anonymous) 2014-04-08 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
hell yes, this. I keep finding people who seem to think it'd be amazing if daemons were real and meanwhile I just think the idea's horribly weird and intrusive and outright disgusting... D:

IA, the daemons were the most interesting part of HDM and the main reason I liked the books. (The ones that I read, anyway. I never did finish the last one...)

Same and I finished them. ALSO, BEARS. Also, the knife was kinda cool. The plot got boring pretty quickly though.

I don't think I really kept much track of the plot lol. I loved the worldbuilding though.

I know what you mean. I think that's why I like daemon AUs so much. Same concept, different plot.
