Words or phrases that were weird to see outside of their subculture

(Anonymous) 2014-04-08 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
When internet memes started to get mentioned and marketed irl, that really threw me into a loop.

I heard someone say "lol" once.
I saw ads with OMG on them.
And once a cornershop nearby advertised their icecream thus: "Wow, much discount, very ice cream."

I'd buy that icecream.

Ragecomic bumper stickers are dumb. I cannot believe how many I've seen. It's so fucking weird.

I have never seen a rage comic bumper sticker.

And I like rage comics. (some of them.)

I liked them and can appreciate a funny one but the bumper stickers make you look really stupid.

And you're lucky you haven't seen them.

The word "meme" itself. I know it existed before internet memes, but I wasn't aware of that for a long time.

The first and so far only time I've heard anyone say "slut shaming" outside of tumblr and feminist blogs was in the Vampire Academy movie, of all places.

Off topic, I hate the practice of "slutshaming" (like who gives a shit about somebody else's sex life and why the hell blah blah) but I also hate the word. It just sounds obnoxious and hall monitory to me ("You there! Slutshaming! To the office!" - what does a hall monitor doooo? i don't know).

Tumblr speak on my facebook feed.

For Pokémon Profile Month, someone on my friends list changed their icon to Espurr with "frick frack" in comic sans.

That was really weird to me.

I heard a person in one of my classes say 'feels' the other day.

I say "feels" all the time

I've heard feels a few times irl and I've noticed hella gotten more popular among nerds.

"Hella" was an offline slang term long before the interwebz.

It is, but I've noticed it being more popular among nerds as of late.

I thought that too, and was wondering if I missed something. (I've been using hella for a long ass time.)

I remember using 'hella' years and years ago. Sadly now people seem to be misusing it. (Things are not 'hella!')

My sister told me to stop saying hella. I like it, dammit. sulk.

I don't even type 'feels' often, but I'm pretty sure I've said it in casual conversation at least once. *hangs head*

(I do however like saying 'I have a lot of feelings about ____', but think that sounds a bit better, lol.)

Re: Words or phrases that were weird to see outside of their subculture

(Anonymous) 2014-04-08 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I use it in speech but very seldom in writing. I like it because it has an extra connotation of "feelings which are wrecking my ability to effectively use the English language" that "feelings" doesn't have.

I know a lot of people who say feels.

Our local anime & video games convention has an artist's alley, where people can create fanart & make a profit off it.

Last year, someone was selling memes.

Not memes that they'd drawn or painted or anything. Just memes that they'd copied & pasted off the internet & printed out.

People were BUYING THEM.

And that is the story of how I lost the last, vestigial threads of my faith in humanity.
