As a biracial women in fandom, I wish they would too. I think them tiptoeing around it and making justifications is much worse/irritating/upsetting to me than them flat out admitting it. Maybe because it's the denial that fandom doesn't have problems when it comes to race tgat makes me feel this way..

I don't think it's as complicated as that either, but it may play a bit of a role. But you would think with how fandom loves taking its hypermasculine characters and making them submissive, it wouldn't be a problem.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I do think it's a bit more complicated than that. It's not that black men aren't attractive, but they are permanently tagged as Other by our society. A black guy can never just be a guy in most folks' minds, he's always going to be a black guy. And I think that energy interferes with slash chemistry in the part of the id where shipping happens. Does that make sense?

I ship Tony/Rhodey and have written one of the longer stories for that pairing. I don't ship Steve/Sam. Sometimes it's just a simple matter of does/does not ship, and I wish people would admit that.

Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. Sure. But let's look at an example here. Clint Barton and Phil Coulson shared 47 seconds of conversation. It's one of the biggest ships in the fandom. Nick Fury (to use a direct quote) "moved heaven and earth" to bring Phil Coulson back to life and there's... well, let's say very little going on there.

Why? What's the reason? Why do two dudes that have no history or real interaction past a little snark rule the fandom when there's ship bait like that going on else where? Hmm?

You know what. I agree. There has never been fic, art, or whatever for the slash pairings I ship that have black men in them. (Wesley/Gunn, Tony/Rhodey, etc, etc). I'm tired of people making half-assed 'non-racial' justifications for why there isn't fic for them. Hardly surprised fandom isn't producing anything for Steve/Sam.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Wasn't there a small, but fairly decent amount of Gunn/Wesley fic? I only dabbled in the pairing myself and while I do ship them, I didn't read much for them. Got any recs?

Yes, there was a small amount of fic, and even a fanvid(I think) when I was in Angel fandom! I meant in comparison to the other pairings, I was being kind of hyperbolic (and bitter).

I meant it hyperbolically, not literally, I realize that wasn't clear. I just meant it feels like there's never fic for those pairings in comparison to the other ones.

No lie, I love the idea of Tony/Clint cause i'm pretty sure they'd just snarky-snark and play gay chicken with each other until they wound up banging

but truly, they did nottt interact in the movies except one or two lines in the battle sequence and the fact that there are hundreds more fics about them than for Tony/Rhodey is egregious

UGH FOREVER BITTER ABOUT WESLEY AND GUNN, LET ME TELL YOU INTERNET

I didn't watch Angel until the end of last year. I shipped this SO HARD. SO HARD did I ship it! Especially around like season 2, when Angel's all sads about Darla so Wes/Gunn/Cordelia are off doing their own thing and I so want that threeway but I also just want the dudes, cause of the way they didn't like each other at first, but then they grew into a beautiful broship and it's all high fives and "English" and aisdhfjkdelosw give it to meee. Then sadly in s3 they both liked Fred and their beautiful friendship went off the rails and nooo but I still thought there would be angsty fic about it! Perhaps some threeways? I HAD SO MUCH HOPE

I get thee to AO3 and oh my goddddd. There was a little, yes, but NOT ENOUGH. Forever, and ever bitter. /riveting tale chap

What do you think of Leverage? Hardison's probably the most-shipped character in that fandom, when you add up all the Hardison/Eliot, Hardison/Parker, and Hardison/Parker/Eliot fic.

(Unfortunately, that's the only reasonably large fandom I can think of where a black man gets shipped the most.)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
I can't speak for anyone but myself, obviously, but just to give a specific example because you brought up the pairing, I don't ship Clint/Coulson because they're white dudes. I couldn't care less that they're white dudes. (I ship all flavors of people.) I don't even find either of them particularly attractive. I ship them because the particular relationship dynamic provided by their character types, the irreverent soldier type paired with the authority figure in a nice suit who is more than he seems, is basically my ideal relationship dynamic. That's it.

I kind of agree with this actually. I don't actually ship Steve/Sam in this particular case, but I have wondered why it is that there really do not seem to be any major slash ships that involve black men, even when the show itself could not have set it any more perfectly. Common Law and NCIS LA both come to mind here, and also Psych which you mentioned. (Although I do hear that Morgan/Reid is a thing in the Criminal Minds fandom, so....maybe there's one?)
(reply from suspended user)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
With both Psych and Scrubs I was genuinely surprised there wasn't slash of it everywhere, both those ships are written as about as close to canon as you can get with the characters still being straight men (and heck even the Psych writers knew how important Shawn/Gus was considering they made the whole series finale about the two of them.)

It is really sad to realize that with some people it's because one person in the pairing is black. I don't think all of them do it consciously but there really does seem to be a lot of internalized racism in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
kudos to you for this thread, I wish this was a conversation fandom had more often. Stop trying to pretend slash isn't about more than "chemistry". And besides being attracted to the characters, I think a lot of slash fandom ends up projecting anything and everything into these pairings and being non-white (like being female) is a loaded identity that interferes with that.
