I can't seem to figure out the fandom angle....

(Anonymous) 2014-04-14 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Me neither.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-14 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe OP is hoping that anons will dip into their fandoms to suggest an obscure country of origin.

I'll just keep thinking that the pic is that of Poirot's moustache.

Seriously, this is ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-14 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I can relate, no seriously I can... but this isn't really fandom at all.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-14 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm straining to see how this is fandom, but I can relate, OP. People mean well, but they don't see to realize that their questions make them sound a little sheltered at best. At worst, it becomes a game of "omg you're so foreign and exotic!" and it feels weird for people to make a big deal over things you had no control over whatsoever.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-14 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that a moustache?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently. Amaïh Kûrvi-Tasch! :)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-14 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
wtf does this have to do with fandom

(Anonymous) 2014-04-14 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
But..people ask about name origins all the time without meaning that "you're not from around here you dirty outsider!" I mean...the things people are saying are not harsh at all and are really innocent. I think this is way more about your own insecurities, which are way blown up and you should probably work on. In ways other than lying to people.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-14 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I think people don't necessarily mean it in a negative way, but it's still singling someone out as being different and Not From Around Here when you do that. This doesn't sound like the end of the world to most people, but to those of us who have unusual names or physical appearances... well, this happens ALL THE TIME.

I'm not the OP, but I'm in a very similar situation except that I'm not white, but grew up in a predominantly white school district. People don't ask little blonde haired blue-eyed girls if they can speak English (while talking VERY.LOUDLY.AND.CLEARLY), they don't make a fuss over her name or "exotic" looks or ask her if she knows about American food ("THIS.IS.PIZZA.") and customs ("ON.THANKSGIVING.WE.EAT.TURKEY."). And you know what? I speak English just fine, with no accent. It's the only language in which I'm fluent, because while I wasn't born in the U.S., the U.S. is the only country I've known as home.

So is this 100& about insecurities? No. I don't think all white people are out to get me. I know that 99% of the people who ask these things don't mean me any harm and aren't out to hurt my feelings. I have never and will never handle it the way OP is suggesting.

But I still appreciate it when people don't do this to me, or at least keep it to a minimum without making a big deal about the fact that I'm different.

I think it's the assumption that because you are of a different ethnicity, you must have not grown up in a particular place. I can see how it would be annoying.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
It's really common for Asian Americans to get this. Ultimately, whether questioning it is curiosity about another person's heritage or saying "you're not from around here," it boils down to the same sentiment- that the person in question is an outsider.

Not getting on you but the whole thing is pretty stupid.

I don't get how this is a secret about fandom?
mekkio: (Default)

[personal profile] mekkio 2014-04-14 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Born in Puerto Rico raised in the mainland States. (Don't know much Spanish. My accent is Virginian.) First name is extremely uncommon. Not to mention gets butchered to kingdom come. (It's Lamech, if you are wondering.) I've gotten the same questions and responses as you have. And you know, just grow a thicker skin because there will always be people who will ask these questions. It's okay to roll your eyes and sigh. But don't get upset. It's not worth it. And these statements and questions are never meant in spite. Just curiosity and pleasantry. So, just shrug your shoulders and go, "Despite the name I'm a local like you" and move on.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Is it rude to ask how you pronounce your name? If I ever meet another Lamech, I'd like to say it right the first time. :)

This, honestly. Hell, even I would have asked you from where your name was, and I'm from central america. I get that some remarks can be rude, but most of the time it's just curiosity.

Besides, after meeting like 19 'Jesicas' and 'Megans' during their lives most people are going to be a bit curious about more unusual names.

This would totally have a fandom angle if you tell people you're from Latveria.

There's no fandom angle here. But I sympathise.

One of my friends was born in Britain but because she looks 'foreign' people are always asking where she's from. I find it strange, she finds it annoying and verging on racist. She has a local accent!

So yeah, you're here now, you don't want to identify with where you were born (at least not at the moment). I'd lie too, just to stop the annoyance.

not fandom

You can just tell people the country you live and were raised in.

OP here

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry for a late reply, and in response to those who questioned the "fandom": it is indeed Tintin, and the country in question Borduria. :) The moustache with the red background is Bordurian national flag.
