Did you ever watch In Bruges? I'd be curious to hear what you think of the dwarf actor role in that.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
i read the summary on wiki, does his character do anything before the end?

I thought it was pretty poor. Throw in a dwarf to show how crazy the night has become. It must be crazy if there's a dwarf! No way do they do normal things like the rest of us... oh wait... actually...

It's not a positive or dignified role by any means, but I guess it's better than being a twee magical sidekick.

That fucking movie.

Cosigned. Good secret.

Anybody know of any other book/manga/etc that could be turned into series or movies, that have dwarf characters?

Anything about Toulouse-Lautrec...except that in "Moulin Rouge" he was played by John Leguizamo kneeling with his legs strapped up.

(Toulouse-Lautrec may not have actually had the genetic condition, but he was about 135cm tall.)

I'd love to see an adaptation of ME Kerr's YA novel Little Little. There are some plot aspects that would feel dated and need to be reworked if it weren't done as a period piece (1981 is totes a period piece now), but the voice still totally feels fresh to me.

+1, anon, and I have a cousin I'm close with who has GHD. It's really awesome to see when they can just be real people (like Samson from Carnivale, or Hetty on NCIS LA), not mythical beings!

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry if that wasn't clear, I left off part of my first sentence. That was meant to read that my cousin would agree with you as well (because it's something we've talked about often).

As someone who's a fan of an actor I've seen have play a dwarf twice (and a gnome in addition to that) - agreed.

Me too. That or for every non-stereotypical role like in Time Bandits, there is the standard role of playing elves. Usually Santa's elves. Which is a shame because good actors come in all sizes. I wonder what those actors who are reduced to playing elves and dwarves could do with and interesting non-pigeon holed role.

...well there is also: http://www.cracked.com/blog/i-love-tiptoes/

...........jokes aside, I think even before Tyrion, Peter Dinklage was always the best thing in whatever he appeared in, even trainwrecks like the above. Loved his character in Penelope too.

I can't wait for him to be Bolivar Trask in the new X-Men.

I think Peter Dinklage's career is pretty remarkable for this reason. It's too bad that he's really the exception and not the rule.

I always thought the dwarf was the best thing about The Cape.

Time Bandits! That's a great film with uh... shorter people. I have no idea about the terminology. But, no, there's not much. There was a woman in Phoenix Nights. Some cameo parts in Twin Peaks and Trees Lounge (which made fun of the way it was done in Twin Peaks - 'why is it surreal if the dream sequence has a dwarf in it? I'm a dwarf all the time! It's not surreal for me!')

Dinklage is kind of an acting powerhouse though. There's not many actors of any size that could do what he does. I just watched Death at a Funeral and The Station Agent just for him and it was worth it. Though they're both good films even without his added bonus.

Agreed. Especially for someone like Dinklage or Michael J. Anderson or Warwick Davis who are just really good actors.

Now, I'm thinking about Night Court.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Because, yes, it was played for laughs, but Daniel Frishman played a District Attorney (Dan's boss).

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
They're not *stuck* with it. The show needed dwarfs, literally, so they got people with dwarfism to play it. I'm absolutely SURE that if they'd got actors that didn't have dwarfism and somehow made them look shorter the cry about discrimination and erasing etc would be deafening.

One of my favourite dwarf roles is Dr. Miguelito Loveless on Wild Wild West. Loveless is a megalomaniac mad scientist whose motivation is to regain his family's Spanish-granted lands in California by forcibly removing it from US control, and afterwards to have revenge for being perpetually thwarted in that goal and others by our heroes. I think he was supposed to be a once-off villain like most villains on the show, but then Michael Dunn walked onscreen and played a thoroughly charming and psychotic genius who more than gave our heroes a run for their money, and after that Loveless was pretty much one of only two recurring villains on the show (and the other one, Count Manzeppi, only appeared twice to Loveless' ten times).

So, agreed. Fantasy dwarves are the least of what can be played.

Mad Max - Beyond Thunderdome did pretty well in that regard.

I thought about that when watching the most recent Game of Thrones episode - for those that don't watch it (this isn't particularly spoilery) Joffery put on a comedic display of little people re-enacting various battle scenes, which quite reasonably insulted Tyrion. I was wondering if those other actors were usually stuck with 'look at the funny little people' roles in real life, and what they felt about it.
