Stuff you did not expect to enjoy....

An eon ago, I think I made a post about terrible stuff you have watched because of any actor you love (the things I do for you Fassbender). Let's go the other way. What are some shows/movies/games/books that you consumed because of an actor/creator that you thought were going to be terrible but you ended up really enjoying?

I started watching Political Animals for Sebastian Stan (I have a teeny crush). And I am on the third episode and actually really enjoying. I am a bit sad it only got one season.

I also watched Doom for Karl Urban and realized I LOVE that movie. It is cheesy and cliche but I still rewatch it every now and again.

What about you all?

Pompeii. I expected it to be pretty stupid. And I guess it probably was. Except I really enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun.

How I Met Your Mother. I don't really do comedy. Except now this show which was one of the few things to make me laugh.

I, too, watched Doom for an actor (Dwayne Johnson) and found it really enjoyable.

I also picked up the first Dragon Age long, long after it was released, because I needed a BioWare fix after Mass Effect 2. I didn't think I'd like it, I'm not usually big on swords-n-sorcery games, but I LOVED IT. I must have played it through 3 or 4 times.

Dwayne Johnson cracks me up. He always looks like he is trying to be super tough but I just want to hug him and let me cart me around places.

Is Dragon Age as epically long as I hear Mass Effect is?

I still think the plot is stupid with all the superheroes and all the supervillains, but now I enjoy the silliness and plotholes.

I watched Savages for the Taylor Kitsch prettiness and because I heard there was a threesome scene, and ended up really loving it.

I wish you hadn't made it about actors, that limited some of my choices.

Though Doom? Really? (If you must get one syllable movies starting with D that Karl Urban is in, go with Dredd!)

As for me, I only watched Pulp Fiction because Uma Thurman was in it. I thought it was gonna suck ass.

The Almighty Johnsons. I watched it for Dean O'Gorman, despite the fact that the gif posts I'd seen about it made it look terribly unappealing. It isn't without flaws, but it is fun. And as it turned out I find Tim Balme (Mike) so much hotter than Dean, so that's nice.

I also watched Wilby Wonderful for Paul Gross and Callum Keith Rennie, which I liked more than I expected to. Oh, and it introduced me to Ellen Page!

I watched Tin Cup years ago because of Kevin Costner despite not liking sports films and it's still one of my favourites to this day.

Somehow I always seem to expect enjoying the stuff I end up enjoying... Maybe because I read all the reviews ever and find all the spoilers and go through the Wiki article.

Which is a bit of a pity. I imagine it would be nice to enjoy something unexpectedly.

Like, pretty much all C. Thomas Howell and David Heavener movies. Many of them are actually really good. Some David Decouteau (of A Talking Cat!?! fame) are actually charming.

i've watched an entire season of the practice just to see michael emerson as a psychotic serial killer (admittedly i'd do a lot more than that for him as you can see below) and well, it wasn't the best show i've ever watched but it was pretty good. i think a lot of cop shows today owe some of their tropes and style to this one.

i've also watched saw for the same actor (i have it bad ok), expecting nothing but blood and cringeworthy dialogue. it really wasn't as bad as some people claim it is. sure, the camera gets so shaky sometimes you wonder if the cameraman has parkinson's, but overall it wasn't as cliché as it could have been, and the cast was pretty great (i didn't expect to see ken leung and it made me ridiculously happy).

i'm still wary regarding zorro, though. ilu michael, but idk if seeing you stealing the shit out of every scene you're in is worth having to sit through every scene you aren't in. i've got to admit the muttonchops were pretty cute though.

Just about every Uwe Boll film I have ever watched, actually. I have no idea why people think his stuff is so bad.

It's actually a show about horrible people using infantile, crass humor done well. I did not think that existed anymore in the post-Family Guy world.

I went to see Van Helsing for Kate Beckinsale and I ended up enjoying that entire cheesy monster-movie romp so much.

I was bored one night and figured I'd give the first episode of Kill la Kill a shot. I get through the first episode, I'm like "yeah, I dunno..." and then I watched the second episode because I figured that was more fair. Because of the uniforms and our, uh, introduction to Senketsu, I was prepared to write it off as yet another damn fanservice anime. Yet something kept me watching for just a couple episodes more...

And now I can barely wait for the OVA in a few months. How the hell did that happen?

I hated The Dark Knight and wasn't expecting The Dark Knight Rises to be any better, but watched it anyway because ANNE HATHAWAY AS CATWOMAN OMG YES. Ended up enjoying it quite a bit, although I don't think it was nearly as good as Batman Begins.

It's not because of any particular actor/musician/creator that I've been giving things a chance, but still in the vein of 'stuff I did not expect to enjoy':

I've been randomly hitting up the 'music' and 'audio' tags on Tumblr lately (for some reason the latter tends to contain more actual music than the former) and I've found a surprising number of listenable rap songs. Apparently I don't actually hate the genre, I just hate what plays on mainstream radio these days.

Dracula 2000. I watched it for Jeri Ryan, and it was pretty much as bad as I expected it to be, but goddamn was it fun, at least when the vampires/soon-to-be-vampires are on the screen. The good guys were as boring as tar and I wanted them to lose so that Drac and his pack could vamp it up all over New Orleans forever. I even started a fanfic where the Brides and Omar Epps' character (whose name I've long since forgotten so I mostly just call him Fangy Foreman) find out that they can get totally wasted by proxy by feeding on drunk people. Hijinks would've ensued if I hadn't abandoned it.

I didn't expect to like Hunger Games but I watched it because I saw Jennifer Lawrence in Winter Bone, anyway, I really liked it.

There are others but my brain is fried from the heat today.
