Taking back Halloween

[personal profile] iceyred 2013-11-01 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Halloween has come and gone, but here's a link to keep in mind for next year!

http://takebackhalloween.org/

I like their Morrigan costume. Might have to consider that one.

I cop to having a very over active imagination as a child (that shitty Mothman Prophecies movie left me paralyzed with fear waiting in the dark for my mother to come home - because it was so boring I started filling in the blanks for myself) but Baba Yaga and her chicken leg hut fascinated and terrified me more than anything. I can't even specifically recall why but I'm having nostalgic goosebumps.

Overrated but still good?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-01 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any fictional works that you think are genuinely good, but which you still think are overrated by critics or fandom or society in general, because yeah, they're good, but they're not as perfect and flawless and superior and mindblowing as people make out?

For me, one example is Granada Sherlock Holmes. I love it, I think it's great, but I am sick of people holding it up as some kind of gold standard to measure all Holmes by, or some kind of flawless adaptation of purest ACD spirit. It's imperfect and does some things boringly or poorly and it's not basically canon. I still really enjoy and adore it, but I think it's unfortunately become overrated in fandom.

How about you guys? Any works that you feel this way towards?

The Hunger Games. Really enjoyed them, but they are meh.

The actors on SPN (by the fans). Yes, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padelecki are good actors. But they sure as hell are not 'Hollywood blockbuster' material.

Rec fics you have been reading (or ask for fics)!

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-11-01 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Just an excuse to share this fic I know would interest some people on here.

I know some people on here love de-aging fics and I found this one de-aged Loki fic that somehow has escaped my notice until recently. I am sure everyone who is interested has read it already, but just in case.

keep your heart around (you might need it someday)
Summary: Tony Stark finds himself as a de-aged Loki Odinsson's temporarily designated parental figure, through no fault of his own. Responsible superhero co-parenting doesn't just involve feeding, housing and clothing a tiny Asgardian, it involves rubber ducks, transdimensional vortexes at bathtime, fruit parties, pictures of robots that draw other robots and hoverboards (eventually), as the team keep Loki safe while they look for a solution.

So read any good fics lately?

Things everyone should know how to do

(Anonymous) 2013-11-01 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
We've had two different problems with fuses in my house within as many days so I've decided to try and teach myself how to fusebox this weekend. It's made me curious about what else I don't know how to do, so...

What do you think everyone should know how to do?

I feel odd asking this

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Um, I feel weird asking this but anybody know where I can learn to write a resume or places that have good resources. Any advices in general would be good. I've been out a job for awhile but I do volunteering here and there.

I want to apply to a particular job that needs a resume. (It's something I'm fairly knowledgeable about)

The last time I had a resume writing class was in college

Revisiting (very) old fandoms

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Today I ended up going through old fic from my very first fandom, Westlife RPF. It was almost all terrible BUT I've been listening to them again for the first time in years and now I'm strongly tempted to take up that one epic fic I abandoned way back when. In hindsight it was pretty bad but I loved it so! I had big plans and I've always regretted never finishing it but there'd be absolutely no fandom left. And the only plan I had for NaNoWriMo was to write 25 kink meme fills. I could re-write the whole thing and make it better! But. No fandom. Has anyone here ever finished a fic long after interest had died down - and if so was your personal satisfaction in doing so worth the effort?

Just listening to songs I used to enjoy

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
and realizing I enjoy them less now that I understand them fully.

"It's Gonna Be Me" is an Entitled Nice Guy's anthem.

Also "As Long As You Love me" by Backstreet Boys is kinda stupid. "I don't care who you are, what you did, as long as you love me" "...what they did....? what so you wouldn't care if they killed their last ex...um....okay sure"

Maybe I'm over-thinking these songs. Or maybe the Backstreet Boys didn't count on one of their old listeners spending her adolescence watching The Investigation Channel and Law and Order SVU and Criminal Minds.

Anybody else find themselves having a hard time enjoying a song when they learned what it was about / what it meant?

New Korra (Spoilers)

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Welp, that's it for me. I thought that since Mako didn't kiss Asami back, that they weren't going to go down that road again. Boy was I wrong. Mako and Asami are shacked up together again and it hadn't even been a week since Korra left. Really, Mako loved Korra so much, eh? I'm just going to pretend the series ending with season one. Now I really do think Mako is a scumbag. Asami isn't much better, in my opinion.

What are some names that you like from books you've read, whether because they just sound awesome or the book gives them meaning or what have you.

Or for writers...what are some names that you've come up with. that you love and would like to share?

Overlooked romances?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
What are some romantic subplots or one-shot stories in larger works or series that you think are really adorable or well-done, but which no one really pays attention to?

I always thought Madame Maxine/Hagrid in Harry Potter was really interesting, because we only got to see/hear about little plot-relevant bits and pieces of it. But there's angst, and prejudice, and falling out, and overcoming prejudice, and making up, and going undercover, and adventures, and battling giants together, and so much great stuff there.

Also, Dr. Watson/Mary Morstan in The Sign of Four. Seriously, how adorable is that whole subplot? Watson is such a darling with his ridiculous chivalrous angst over the treasure I just can't. It's the actual cutest love story I've ever read.

Also, Antonio/Sebastian from Twelfth Night. I found Antonio's besottedness and Sebastian's obvliousness to be utterly endearing and surprisingly sincerely sad at the end, even if it was supposed to be funny.

Ok, um, so, BBC Sherlock

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
So, I watched this show, hearing it was really good, but problematic with it's women and minorities and such. I wanted to see what people meant.

But when I saw it, I just thought it was...kind of bad.

Not because of the issues with sexism, or racism, or homophobia. I just thought it was...sort of shit? I mean, maybe I'm biased because I'm a Sherlock Holmes fan, but I never get into snits about purist wank and being super-faithful to the books or anything. I like a lot of the adaptations through the years, including some of the less inspired ones. I just thought the show was bad, as in, un-good, as in, didn't have much good stuff in it. I thought the plots were pedestrian and not that good, the characterization was inconsistent and not that good, and the dialogue was, while not bad, far less good than it tried to sound.

I'm not sure if this is hype backlash or not on my part. Can anyone explain to me what they found to be really good about this show? If you can, I can probably just explain it away as me being spoiled and hearing too much about the show beforehand.

So I'm back from the MRI-- won't hear the results for a day or two, but I don't expect them to come back with anything.

Uhm. I dunno, it was pretty scary, but at least hopefully I won't need one again. Unfortunately the tech was pretty aloof and unconcerned with the fact I was really scared, he just wanted to get me in and out.

I think the worst part of it was that I forgot to call my Mom afterwards because I was so freaked out, and then when she called me, we only talked for a few seconds. I guess I just really needed family, but she's just so busy and I don't want to impose on her.

So yeah. I just really wish I had someone to hug right now.

Looking for fic...?

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2013-11-02 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm looking for a Law & Order: SVU fanfic where the premise is that Olivia is undercover at a house of prostitution, and she is the head mistress of the business under the bad guys. Elliot comes in as a john to check up on her. She gives him a flip book of girls he can have, but he pays the bad guys $10,000 to sleep with her instead because she's normally off-limits. Elliot and Olivia go to a room, and there are cameras there, so Elliot tries to make it look like they're having sex. The bad guys realize they're faking, and guys with guns come in. Idk what else happens, but it was muli-chaptered and used to be on a Law & Order fansite, but I've been unable to find it. Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Thanks! :)
