Re: Do you read more fiction or fanfiction?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Fiction. My fandoms aren't too big, and all the decent writers have wandered away from them. It must be over a year since I've read a good new piece of fanfiction.

Re: Advice and tips? (tw: depression, suicide)

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-04-26 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
If these thoughts are intrusive to the point where you can't distract yourself from them and they're interfering with your daily routine, then it's probably time to see a professional about it.

But... everyone gets depressed. Nearly everyone considers suicide at some point in their lives, if only from the standpoint of "what if". Sometimes the answer is medication, sometimes the answer is just learning to accept and be okay with the fact that you aren't perfect, life isn't predictable, and goals usually don't turn out exactly as planned. Sometimes it's easiest to find faith in something (karma, fate, god, whatever you like) that things are going to turn out okay.

If you're the kind of person who likes goal-directed solutions, picking up a new commitment (ex. volunteering) can really make you feel like you're contributing, and give you new avenues to consider for where you want to take your life next.

IDK what Smash is, my first guess was a band - she looks like she's at a show so I figured a singer or something. So it's not really obvious it's about a character from that one line and title.

Re: What kind of entertainment mediums do you like?

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-04-26 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Most of them, but games are my favorite because I love being actively involved in the story. (I especially like games where I can influence the outcome of said story.) Even when you can't, there's something special about controlling the character in the given setting... When it works it tends to hit a lot harder than movies or tv do. But...you know, personal preference; I'm just always going to find games magical.

TV and movies are great too and I have a hard time choosing between them, but TV can be so hard to keep up with. I almost prefer movies solely because it is really difficult keeping up with like ten series at a time. (Which is what I'm almost always trying to do.)

Comics are awesome, as are books. There is something to be said about using your imagination and books can be great for that.

Ehh, I disagree, it just took the last 20 years of shitty X-Men writing. As an old fart, I find any attempt to read X-Men these days to be equal parts baffling and repugnant. It's like combining the worst parts of Dr. Who bafflegab with Frank Miller wannabe moral greys.

Yes!

Also, I have to say that one of the best things of seeing Cap 2 in IMAX. Was how amazing shots of his ass looked. Damn that man is fine.

I love it, i'm watching.
I love that despite all the *crap*, Don is still trying to connect with Sally, and they do love each other. I think Sally hates Betty and loves her in equal amounts. I think she *hates* her step-dad.

Don...wow, I dunno. I think never? I think, despite him being a clueless bastard a lot of the time, he will stumble onto something new and better. I dunno if he'll keep Megan, though - she's getting tired of his crap.

DAWN!! I am so chuffed that Joan made her head of personnel. That is AWESOME. I'm so glad she's finally getting a real story. And yay for Joan, too! I think Roger, though, is going to do one too many tabs of LSD and never come back.
And Pete makes me laugh, he's so damn earnest and he's such a jackass.

And holy crap, does Peggy need to get laid.

holy crap, that is not how you run a forum.

it's amazing some women even get into video game in the first place, and manage to stay there.

"Spirk," because "Spirk."

And just about any pairing where people seriously debate "canon" and "endgame." If it's not a tiny bit cracky, there's not much point to it.

Omg I'm never moving to Oregon, that's terrible.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yep.

Nowadays, I just avoid it as a general rule, because it's used as a cheap, tacky plot device, and rarely treated well.

Ooh, i need to dl the 2nd episode. I liked the first one, though it was very odd and a little offputting. But yeah - good. In such a strange way.

HOMESTUCK! 4 kids play a game that will save/doom the world! They meet other kids who played and try to grow up and win.

Also Side Comic PARADOX SPACE (which makes zero sense if you don't read homestuck.

http://www.mspaintadventures.com/

Now for things you didn't necessarily expect to be in this

Unsounded: WORLD BUILDING OUT THE ASS. You could spend as long reading the author's formsprings (one as word of god, one in character) as the comic. BEAUTIFUL ART.

A young girl, presumed heir to a theiving operation, is sent to prove herself by collecting tribute from a family branch. With her is a blackmailed undead sorcerer who's trying to find a reason to keep unliving... and not eat everyone around him.

Deals with religion, abuse, fantastical racism and is really fuckign compelling! Also lots of people of color if that's a thing you like to see. READ THE STORIES IN THE MISC SECTION OF THE COMIC, THE AUTHOR IS GREAT WITH PROSE!

Paranatural. New kid in town starts seeing weird shit. Turns out it's ghosts. Turns out he's not alone. Mentor is the exactly the sort of shady, kinda irresponsible jackass you'd expect from somebody actually using kids to fight ghosts. Pretty colors.

Girl Genius. Why don't mad scientists rule the world? Oh wait, turns out they do. Europe, an alternate history. Those mad boys and girls with dangerous ideas, called "Sparks" in polite company have created a very different power structure that largely follows old black and white movie mad scientist rules (Don't call them mad, they'll show you! They'll show you all!), so don't demand the monster you created serve you... that never works.

Agatha Clay, a young college girl begins to emerge as not only a very strong spark, but discovers she's the direct heir to mixed lineages, with ancestors that were some of the greatest beloved hero's in all of europa... and also the greatest most horrible monsters this world has ever seen. And some of the henchmen of the past want to become the new army of monsters in her future, with varying hopes as to what kind of monster army they are going to be. Other's recognizing what she could be come, for good or ill, want to ensure she has no future. She's got her priorities straight though... you don't start dealing with this stuff until you build a death ray!

This webcomic is actually done by legit comic artist Phil Foglio and his wife. Fans of DC comics back in the day might remember him. the upshot is this Always updates on time! the problem is some people hate his faces. Beautiful backgrounds though.

I still can't believe that, given the opportunity, they went with 'Spirk' instead of 'Kock'. You had one job, ST fandom. One job.
