You aren't the only one! Ten is the only one I really enjoy (though I appreciate Nine). I can't even stomach the idea of trying to watch Eleven (I just really, really dislike him for very silly reasons).

His eyes are so sunken-in and creepy looking. He may be a real person, but he verges on the uncanny valley for me.

I thought it was really common to like 10 the best. I never got into him but I also really dislike Moffat as the show runner so 11 is kinda bittersweet to me... 9 and 4 are my favs.

But I am wondering why Op thinks they would be judged for only liking 10... maybe things have changed but last I went to forums everyone thought 10 was the best thing since sliced bread.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-04 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You should check out 5! I think we might have similar views on what Doctor Who is god, and 5 is the only one that I really like besides 10, and kind of 9.

Sure, there might be a few rabid non-Ten fans who would get their fur up, but most DW fans are a bit more reasonable (as long as you don't berate anyone for liking something other than Ten).

I get the feeling people get much more snarly over favorite companions.

Doctor Who fandom is INCREDIBLY elitist.

You're not a ~real fan~ unless you've watched Classic Who.

If Ten is your favorite Doctor it's obviously because he's attractive and therefore you're not a ~real fan~.

ETC ETC

I just ignore it tbh.

You and I have come in contact with very different Who-fan samples, it seems.

That is one section of the fandom. There is also a large section of the fandom that thinks that if you don't think Ten is the best Doctor or if you happen to like Eleven, your opinions on Who are objectively wrong and while you may be a real fan you aren't a good one.

Really, the whole fandom is elitist in general. Every section of the fandom thinks their point of view is the only right one and that they are the only true/good fans.

LOL, I have been watching Dr Who since 1963. I didn't see the first ever episode, but I did see (and remember) the second ever episode, with the cavemen and the burning skulls...

And I'm intimidated by some of the Dr Who fandom!

(But, then, I also think most of their meta is bullshit).

I thought preferring David Tennant was the majority opinion. Is that not the case? I mean, I myself personally prefer Matt Smith, but it seems like almost everywhere I go Ten is the most popular doctor.

It depends on what corner of fandom you find. Generally, yes, David Tennant is the most popular Doctor and wins all the popularity contests. But if you find yourself in a particular corner of fandom then you might feel like it's an unpopular opinion.

I was just going to ask if the tides had turned. My impression had been that most of the NuWho fandom was shitting itself over the wonderfulness of Ten.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
It is, except for fans like the OP who like to think they are an oppressed minority when they are just like the majority...

It's the 'I am a unique snowflake' point of view which also produces so many Mary Sue fics - I think this secret is more an indication of the OP's overall teenage existential angst more than the reality of the Doctor Who current viewership. :D

I think some Doctor Who fans are kind of inwardly hurt a little by the implication that someone could watch a bunch of episodes of their show and only like one aspect, rather than warm to all of the lovely lasting and ever-changing aspects, and the whole boundless Whoniverse with its many fantastical stories.
To them this devalues/disrespects the eternal and important qualities of Doctor Who in some way, which is obviously incredibly silly because someone's personal viewing preferences don't affect Doctor Who in any way whatsoever.

It comes from being overly invested in the franchise. It is a very easy franchise to get overly invested in, if only because it speaks to people's imagination and sense of escape so deeply and broadly with the range of material. This is where that unhealthy elitism comes in; anyone who doesn't 'get it' is mentally closed off to this captivating land of fiction, and must be inferior!

It's enhanced when it comes to Tennant, which I suspect may be partly down to the backlash against Smith from vocal and enraged Tennant fans when Tennant left (and when Smith came in, and while Smith was having his first series, and while Smith was being widely acclaimed, etc.). This gave birth to the whole stereotype of the whiny Tennant fan. Because it was such a bare-faced rejection of the show's premise (everything, including the main actor, changes, but the stories go on), now there's a desire to affirm yourself as a 'Doctor Who fan' by disavowing and shunning anything that even looks like a 'David Tennant-only fan'.

OP, your opinion is enormously popular in the DW fandom. I wouldn't worry about being ripped apart if I were you.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-05 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
So if 10 wasn't attractive you probably wouldn't have watched? This is why I'm wary of girls who say he's their favorite.. just a bunch of shallow fangirls drooling over him. Not talking about the storylines or how his character contributed. Sad

op here

Funny, this is how I feel on the rare instances I admit 10 is my least favorite. Heaven forbid something other than physical attractiveness inform which characters and stories I like. I've always gotten the feeling liking mainly or *only* 10 is... kind of common? Maybe that's wrong, but certainly feels that way (Especially at cosplay gatherings...)

who's a "real" fan?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-06 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
I would never judge you for that, but I'm probably not who you mean.

Honestly, I'm a huge fan of DW but I am not involved in fandom for it. I just watch the shows. I've written ONE fanfic, which still occasionally gets kudos, but that's it. I just love the show, don't want to talk about the plot / characters / writers (unless it's with my family, for instance), and just...it's my happy place.

Not all fans are like whatever fandom experience you've had (and some fandoms can be intense, I know). Sometimes, it seems like the happiest place to be is just enjoying something you love without trying to fit into a broader community that supports/rules it.

Newsflash: you are not a unique snowflake!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
You must be joking: the new Doctor Who fandom is overwhelmingly composed of David Tennant fans! And I should know since I actually prefer both 9 (Christopher Eccleston) and 11 (Matt Smith) to 10. My very first Doctor was 9, so I think he's the greatest, but one would have to be blind not to realize that most fans prefer Tennant's 10th Doctor to all others.

Your secret therefore strikes me as rather disingenuous. Even the mainstream media makes it a point to state again and again how Tennant is the very best Doctor Who ever.

My advice is to go ahead and share your opinion everywhere under your usual alias, and teeming millions of other Doctor Who fans will react just like this comm. Seriously, I have not been able to read all replies yet (this threaded format is rather inconvenient, let's face it) but all the visible ones seem agree with you wholeheartedly.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-09 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
you're boring.
