For a minute, assume that the tumble person was telling the truth exactly as they claimed. In that case, they were totally fine with not contacting security and letting a potential pedophile wander around a convention but still posting it all over tumblr ffffffs.
AND THAT JUST PISSES ME THE FUCK OFF.
ESPECIALLY since the ~girl didn't want to cause trouble~ FUCK. YOU. You are the ADULT. It is your fucking responsibility to get security, to let them know that there is a potential kidnapper/pedophile in an area with a lot of kids.
Guess what? What's why, if you believe a child is about to disclose something to you, you never promise you won't tell, not ever. It is one of the FIRST things you learn when you're learning how to work with kids. Hell, some states have a mandatory reporting laws, so if you don't report, not only are you being a piece of shit, you're also breaking the law.
Congratulations.
And if the post wasn't real/was exaggerating, as more information seems to claim? That's just fucked up. Pedophiles aren't a fucking joke.
THIS
(I was disgusted when I saw some people calling the OP of that story a "hero". THERE IS NOTHING REMOTELY HEROIC ABOUT WHAT THEY DID.)
Re: THIS
Re: THIS
and if it wasn't true...it's kinda gross to attentionwhore off of a made up case of CHILD MOLESTATION just to defame a fandom you don't like.
(also minor nitpick but....the "nickname" they gave the girl 'Babby'? Sheez talk about patronizing.)
Re: THIS
(Yeah... That weirded me out, and I know I would have been weirded out when I was 11. Maybe if it was a diminutive of my name? Like Barbara/Babby or something, but still! Of course, that was me. |D)

Yeah, from what I've heard, this was either really blown out of proportion, or it didn't happened at all.
Either way, it pisses me off.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-10 12:12 am (UTC)(link)One of the reasons why I wouldn't have doubted this story if not for the 'not telling anyone' thing.
no subject
Yeah, on my end, I had already read the daily dot article by the time the post came around, so I was already suspicious (give that the dd article only listed one other source to the situation), but the fact that they didn't tell anyone is what drove it from "it might have happened, but I want more evidence then a tumblr post and one person confirming it" to "I don't give two flying fucks if you made this up or not you asshats".

SacAnime's response was beyond deplorable and they should be ashamed for following their policy and not to the policy of the con.
What's even more disgusting is that they essentially cried wolf on something as serious as child predators. What the hell, was that person *that* desperate for their 15 minutes of Tumblr fame? Ugh.

Yep.

Seriously, you guys are awesome, and I totally understand the "can't be everywhere" situation.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-10 01:46 am (UTC)(link)It's tough, they are dealing with the geekiest sides of fandoms, cons always attract a certain number of socially maladjusted individuals, probably suffering from any number of mental disorders, and a con is a sometimes overwhelming morass of people, there are bound to be incidents, and I've seen a lot in my 14 years as a congoer (not just for geeky stuff either, the worst brawl I've ever seen was at a model train convention, 3 people hospitalized.
Good security teams always have my respect, and it is the prompt and professional response of con staff that keeps me coming back to my favorite conventions time and time again. So yes, my appreciation goes out to those that volunteer their time and effort to improving the experiences of those around them.
