men's clothing

(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is most of it so boring and ugly?

Re: men's clothing

(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
you are shopping at the wrong places, dude

Re: men's clothing

Because we live in a society (assuming you are in the U.S.) that is terrified of homosexuality and so we feel the need to cloak the male for and make it as unsexy as possible, so that men don't worry that they're being lusted after/don't feel like sexual objects.

Or, I don't know. Because styles come and go and the nineties are in right now.

I think a large part of it is because men fear being seen as gay or effeminate so they go for more conservative choices. Also: "office wear" for men is far more limited than for women.

My bf always bemoans this fact, as he likes things that have colour, and the stuff he likes is mostly in kid's sizes.

Men's clothing seems to be mostly constructed around either their jobs or sports, both of which emphasize fitting in and conformity, so that breeds a very uniform and ugly style of clothing. Women's clothing is mostly about expressing individuality and standing out in a party crowd, so more color and a variation of styles. When women have to wear set clothing for their job it isn't just a uniform style, it is an actual uniform and that tends to come off immediately at home.

Because clothing and fashion in general got boring and ugly post-9/11.

Everything got ugly post 9/11. Osama won the war on terror, even if he (eventually) got killed. The society, culture, and values that existed pre-9/11 was wiped out less than a week after the towers fell.

I love men's clothes. If I weren't curvy (and therefore anything untailored makes me look like I'm wearing a sack) I woud wear men's fashion all the time.

Women's clothing I find dull, badly made an impractical. Can I get just one skirt with deep pockets, please??

Re: men's clothing

(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

Totally agreed on everything here. Except the skirt thing, but that only because I don't wear skirts.

Yep. What the actual shit is up with pants with no pockets, and shirts made from fluff and tissue paper that a) provide no actual warmth, and b) rip to pieces if you tug on it the wrong way.

I would give somebody's right arm for any garment designed for women that has decent pockets -- skirts or jeans. It boggles my mind when I reach into the pocket of a pair of my boyfriend's jeans and my arm disappears halfway to the elbow. I WANT THAT.

Why can't clothing designers understand that there are a substantial number of women out there who buy pants with a purpose in mind other than making their ass look good? My jeans are intended to cover my lower body and provide a place to keep all my stuff so I don't have to carry around a purse to forget everywhere.

men aren't taught how to look good and are not socially encouraged to care deeply about fashion so they're mostly unsure and kinda anxious about that shit

or something else i do not fucking know

Re: men's clothing

(Anonymous) 2014-05-12 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Because sexism teaches us that gender roles must be oppositional. So just as women aren't allowed to feel anger and men are ONLY allowed to feel anger, women are supposed to be looked at, therefore men are NOT supposed to be looked at. Design choices follow from there.

It isn't necessarily. But for the sake of argument I will say that it is probably because people, including designers, still follow the old paradigm of "men = function, women = decorative," and design male and female fashions respectively with these concepts in mind.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-05-13 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't notice it being ugly. Where do you live? Countryside or a big city? I think even not so fashionable clothes can look great, (as long as they never been really in to begin with.)

I am so jealous of the men's clothing here, and wish I could pull it off :< all the women's stuff is pastel and frilly and really not my style, but the men... damn. So cool. I want to wear it all.

Because in the past Heels, frills and pale skin were only worm by rich people who were considered too powerful to work. The higher the heel the richer the person. Around the french revolution when people started getting pissed about aristocracy that craze kinda started to die.

Most of history has kinda been like that. Stuff gets flamboyant. Something happens. Stuff gets boring again.

As someone else put it, most of men's fashion currently is tied to their job. Suits for the suits. T-shirts and jeans for the working men. As Uniform as possible so you don't stand out.

I actually honestly disagree. ETA: yeah some of it is ugly but you can find stuff that isn't if you look, I think.
